McCourty to stay with Patriots!

always waiting to be disappointed to make yourself feel good, eh?

Really---talk about a futile effort trying to get anyone excited about something we've all been concerned about for the past year or so! All I keep seeing is "what's going to happen in 2017?" LOL

That sounds good but the issue is that apparently the McCourty deal was done at the last second right as he was saying goodbye to Bill. So it wasn't exactly in the pipeline to be picked up on, in fact we very nearly lost him. So Curran's feel for the situation seemed to be wrong. I hope he's right about Revis.

Curran isn't one to tweet out stuff like that for no reason.

I knew it and felt it all along that New England would likely keep both D-Mac and Revis....now lets get the other half done!!!

Wilfork's release and Brady's restructure last year are coming into play on this and likely there are plenty of moves the Pats can do to make even more cap space as Miguel pointed out in an awesome earlier post......it would be ironic that no one expected them to do too much and then turn around being busier than anyone could have imagined.

I also anticipate them to be very busy in the draft and target players......just a feeling, though

While I expect to be wrong on signing bonus amount +exact yearly salary nos, I am confident in my 3 year cash total, roster bonus amounts + backloaded structure.

Miguel, Excellent layout of your tremendous 'educated-guess'.

Personally the $11M cap hits in years 3-5 dont stun me so much and make me think that (considering the projections for the salary cap to increase in that timeframe); this contract is actually one that he could play out. That is, it may not require restructuring in year 3 or 4 with an extension and spreading of the cap hit out.

But certainly it gives the patriots the option to re-do it (or even cut him after year 3) should he be injured and/or fall off in abilities (for some ungodly reason) in the next 3 years.

This is jolly good news to wake up to!

It does seem that there was a major chance to me waking up to McCourty as an Eagle. Glad to see we have paid him, yet he wants to stay instead of going to the highest bidder.

There will be some victims here, namely Vereen and Ayers, if of course we pay up for Revis, That will be sad, but money doesn't grow on trees.

It really is a good time to be a Patriot!

I guess I'm the only guy who thinks re-signing McCourty is actually more important to the franchise than getting a few more years of Revis.

Revis to me is a luxury loaner... get it while you can. But Revis is a floater. A few more elite years and then likely past-prime in a Welker kind of way. Revis runs at an elite price point that will be hard to sustain against the cap over the long term. Whereas McCourty's 5-yr deal is for a proven veteran player just entering his prime. By the time McCourty sees the end of this contract he'll be 33 years old, he'll have been a Patriot for 10 years, and served as captain of the D for almost that entire time.

Don't get me wrong, I want to buy as much Revis as we can get and afford. But he's a hired gun. McCourty is and will be the long term core of our secondary for the balance of the decade. A constant. The cornerstone of our D.

The way I see it, if your goal is to compete for a SB in 2016, then I suppose landing Revis is probably the bigger win. If your goal is to compete for a SB every year from now until the day that Belichick decides to retire, a long term McCourty deal goes a lot further.

Before I went to bed last night checked Reiss' Blog, no news.. this morning good news indeed.

McCourty is a favorite and glad to have him on board..

.

I'm glad McCourty is back. I think he's an excellent player but Revis is a generational talent. The gap between McCourty and an average safety is much much smaller than Revis and an average corner.

Welcome back D-Mac. And kudos to BB and the Patriots, sounds like they had a different number in mind but stepped up when they had to. Shows just how much they value Devin.

Best news that I've read all offseason...LOL. As for Revis, I'm just not a fan. I'm sorry. I know that I'm in the minority, but if he leaves, he leaves. This dude is all about the money, IMHO. Don't get me wrong, he is an AWESOME player. He makes the secondary better. But I don't want the team sacrificing the salary cap for one player. But this story is not over yet. We will see what happens.
WELCOME HOME MCCOURTY.

Victoryyyyyyyy

honestly I think this makes it MUCH more likely that revis stays now that mcCourty is back. the secondary/defense is intact to make another run at it. and he/mccourty are good friends

Thank god. The fact that the Pats had never paid big money for a FS had me thinking he was a gonner. Clearly the team never had a player like DMC and BB recognized that.

Now it's time to get Revis squared away.

Great news to wake up to. One down a few more to go, hopefully revis is next, and soon.

Anyone at all surprised at these numbers (if correct)?
It was at that point that Belichick and the Patriots stepped up to levels they hadn't reached in the process. Their final offer of five years and $47.5 million, with $28.5 million in total guarantees (a record number of guarantees for a safety), swayed McCourty's decision at the last moment.

Would confirm how highly BB thinks of DMac, in agreement with most on this board.

the pats knew the whole time they were going to put in a last minute offer, they were just waiting to see what the other offers out there were. So mccourty probably thought he was gone since the pats weren't saying much until the last minute.

Great signing. Thanks to DMac for taking a home town discount.

The Pats seem to be very good at predicting the market value of players. Is that because of Ernie Adams?

I have a friend who was a very successful HS HC, and when I asked him who he liked most on the Pats he chose DM.

Don't see why he shouldn't. His arm is a rocket, so accurate from the pocket but as usual the media want to paint him as an anti-Andrew Luck because he's a black QB. Sick of the notion that just because a QB is black he must be a 'run first guy'. They did it with RG3 too and still do it with Russell Wilson. Winston couldn't be further from that.

ESPN is the first to over-hype racial headlines but never does anything to try and solve the root of the problem: themselves. Same thing with 'deflategate', just because it was the Pats it's a big deal to them and their scummy analysts. I digress though.

Sorry to go off topic, but I couldn't resist.

I don't follow the NCAA that closely, but I have noticed that they went away from pocket passers to more running QBs. My guess is that college HCs got tired of losing their jobs as an NFL minor league and went to what would win at their level, running QBs.

The funny thing is, all of the QBs mentioned are running QBs, even Andrew Luck. Like all NFL QBs, you still can't win unless you can pass from the pocket, no matter what your skin color may be.
