McCourty to stay with Patriots!

Don't like the end of that tweet too much...
I wouldn't take that either way to mean too much.
I heard the audio of that quote and it came out more that he is optimistic and they had talked about playing together again but its a business and he wouldn't try to tell Revis what to do and either way they are training together in Arizona but then ended it with I hope to see him in Training camp.

If we would lose Revis Logan or Butler would need to step up big the free agent cornerbacks are not a step up in any sense of the word.

If your estimate is correct, Miguel, that would make the first 2 years of his contract pretty comfortable. After that I would expect to see a series or restructures where turning salary into bonus money and extending a year. Am I correct in thinking that could be a long term strategy which would keep McCourty's cap number reasonable during the last 3 years of his contract?

If you are suggesting adding dummy years each year where the deferred money would be paid, the answer is yes. The 5 years would be comfortable. The overage would be paid in dead money in 2020-2022.

I don't understand why you think of a 2016 cap hit of $9M as being comfortable and 2017-2019 caps of $11-11.5M to be uncomfortable. My suspicion is that the percentages of cap would be similar ($9M for 2016 compared to an average of $11.167 for 2017-2019.

I had liked flowers but he just re-signed with San Diego. At this point Cary Willams would have to be a legitimate option

I fell asleep, and missed all the excitement. This is great news. McCourty is a special player and the way the league viewed him should point out how valuable he is. He has unique (for now) skills as he could be a stand out CB. That allows Patricia to do more with him than just play a single high S, or 2 deep.

Obviously his range and anticipation go a long way to allowing all of our CB's to be more aggressive when they are playing man or zone. But even more than his physical skills you can't underestimate the value of his leadership and durability.

On the surface it looks like the Pats might have had to overpay a bit more than they would have liked. I would guess $8-8.5MM/yr would have been their preferred range, but his leadership would have been hard to replace (especially with Vince gone)l, PLUS his durability made it easier to make the move.

When the details on the deal come out, look to the guaranteed money. That's the important number, not the total value of the contract.

I'll let the Pats and Belechick worry about " what's comfortable" down the road. As a Patriots fan, and a fan who attends the games or watches every second of every game, I'm extremely...EXTREMELY ...happy that the Pats have made this deal.

Certainly looks like James is going to Tampa. Jason Braddock is reporting that 49ers have put Kaepernick on the block so any team trading down with the Iggles could still get their QB with their nice new bounty of draft picks and still come out ahead. Have no idea what the 49ers are planning to do at QB though.
Probably involves that teams first with a swap and late/later years picks coming from SF.

Yes, the open question is how the guarantees are structured.

After 30 hours of tampering, it seems a very good bet Pats will retain either Revis or McCourty and a pretty good bet they keep both.

While I expect to be wrong on signing bonus amount +exact yearly salary nos, I am confident in my 3 year cash total, roster bonus amounts + backloaded structure.

I deleted my previous response. I knew that something was bothering me. I finally noticed the low cap totals for 2018 and 2019 compared to your previous suggested structures.

You call your structure backloading. I call it front loading.

The first three years are 3/$30M. The last two are 2/$17.5M. The team lays out $10M a year for the first 3 years (presumably where all the guarantees are) and $8.75M for the last 2 years.
========
We'll see tomorrow. My preference would be that the cash total for the first three years be $24.5M and there be a $4M guarantee of 2018 salary. This split would yield AAV's of $8.17M for the first three years and $11.5M for the last two years. 2018 and 2019 salaries might be $11M (with $4M guaranteed) and $12M (which should be a reasonable amount in 2019),

They also have Dennard and Arrington.

My guess is that they'd draft another CB in the earlier rounds 1-3, and consider bringing in a free agent as well. There isn't much left outside of maybe Cromartie--and he's not exactly a fan favorite.

That sounds good but the issue is that apparently the McCourty deal was done at the last second right as he was saying goodbye to Bill. So it wasn't exactly in the pipeline to be picked up on, in fact we very nearly lost him. So Curran's feel for the situation seemed to be wrong. I hope he's right about Revis.

Ummm..... They kept McCourty. He was right about that.

That's a fake Twitter account. There's an extra E in RapSheet.
Uh, no. That was an ESPN report on ESPN Boston. It wasn't a twitter account.

Oops, quoting your post made that confusing. The information in the post you quoted came from a fake Twitter account. Your numbers were correct.

I like McCourty coming back but I feel like this offseason would be pretty disappointing if Revis isn't retained. I'm also hoping this doesn't affect the team's ability to keep Jones, Hightower and Collins next offseason

always waiting to be disappointed to make yourself feel good, eh?

There's a reasonable chance that none of them will be free agents next offseason, as decisions will have to be made on the 5th year options of Chandler Jones and Hightower in a couple of months. Of course, Belichick may realize that it will be difficult to keep everyone and decide not to place the 5th year option on one of them, and one may become a free agent next season. Keep in mind that we don't seem to have many important free agents for the 2016 offseason yet, which is obviously good news.

As far as Jamie Collins goes--he isn't a free agent until March of 2017, which is in two years from now. If the 5th year options are picked up for both Hightower/Jones in a couple of months, then ALL THREE would be free agents in March of 2017, thus giving Bill Belichick 24 months to negotiate. In the end, I find it somewhat unreasonable to think that we can realistically keep all three anyway, but who knows?

Either way, we're always going to have key players hitting free agency every year, which is the same for all NFL teams. It seems as though a lot of people have already begun to look ahead to the 2016 and 2017 offseasons--yet I would bet that when we retain some key free agents then, people will just start worrying about Revis and McCourty all over again, and what will happen in 2019 or 2020. There's got to be some end to the madness!
