Sign the Beast XVI -- Big Vince Wilfork!

I think that Wilfork, at age 34 and coming off an ok-ish season where his run-stuffing prowess was visibly diminished, will soon find that other clubs are not quite willing to pay what Mrs Wilfork told him they will be. I think Wilfork will likely be disappointed by the $4-5m ish kind of numbers he'll be quoted (maybe 2 year at $8m), and that in the end of the day the Pats will be able to match and squeeze in such a number. I know a lot of pundits feel that Wilfork will command $8m+ but I think that is a stretch.

He won't be turning 34 until the middle of next season.

In what way? Draft? FA inventory?

all of them......the draft, even with a decent pick, can produce zero.....see Ron Brace, so until it is something, it is nothing

FA inventory? like who would use sign that would net out more than what is basically spinning your wheels?

I don't think you appreciate the principals of market supply/demand and how younger players are more economically-friendly to teams than older ones.

yes....ron brace was economically-friendly

it seems you have no concept of ROI

I see.

By your logic you chose to keep a 34 year old Wilfork and not make the attempt to draft a DT in the first 2 rounds because you are concerned that the team will draft another Ron Brace.

I see the quote of "can I still play football? Hell yea. Do I still love football? Hell yea." I also the quote of "lots of gas still left in the tank."

What on God's earth leads you to believe that he is going to retire after reading this? I see nothing whatsoever to suggest that. I see lots to suggest the opposite.

If Wilfork were going to retire, why wouldn't he have just done so--and not even commented on the fact that the Pats weren't picking up his option?
I read it the same way, I think he retires as well. (Unless he comes back here)

In those comments were also ones that he will sit back and think about what he wants to do next primarily focussed on his family.
I read it to say, I can still play, and love football, but I don't want to go anywhere else, so retiring may be whats best for my family, but I would come back for the right situation.

I wouldn't be shocked at all. If the money is close, sticking in the place where your family has put down roots (and you've established lucrative long-term endorsement deals) makes sense.

I think he will get a better offer from somewhere outside of NE. Also, I don't think he would have released the statement he did if he wasn't all but positive he wasn't coming back.

Zero.

The FA market and draft is flooded with DTs. Inventory "outweighs" demand.

If VW is thinking he is getting that $ he is going to get served a major slice of humble pie.

I think it depends if he wants to go to a contendor or not.

Does everyone forget that Wilfork looked silly going out there with a highly incentivized contract coming off an achilles tear?

Is there one person here who predicted he was playing 70% of the snaps, not missing a down from injury, blocking a field goal etc.

Of course, he's going to be better next year, with a healthy off season to workout and the injury two years back.

He's older, but he's not a speedy WR, he's a massive DT. He'll play somewhere if he wants to for a while. After a year or two, the benefit of being healthier will be off set by more years, but he'll be able to make more than you think for as long as he's healthy (or not,it doesn't seem to phase him).

This is a guy who came off a career ending injury (according to most people) to anchor a Super bowl team as the leader and far and away best interior lineman. People that think he's now garbage and can be easily replaced by 2-3rd round draft picks, I really wonder if they watch the game.

"In the second round, with the 40th pick, Patriots select NT Ron Brace..."

I see.

By your logic you chose to keep a 34 year old Wilfork and not make the attempt to draft a DT in the first 2 rounds because you are concerned that the team will draft another Ron Brace.

who said 'keep him'? foregone conclusion from the start of the thread.....comprehension, boy.....get it

this is about bringing him back......and having him here in the event they do draft another ron brace because they drafted ron brace......by your logic, the pats should have dumped him when they drafted brace...that would have been awesome

What is your issue?

Here is what I said.

Zero. (no chance for $6m next year)

The FA market and draft is flooded with DTs. Inventory "outweighs" demand.

If VW is thinking he is getting that $ he is going to get served a major slice of humble pie.

My point was VW will not get big money b/c there is DT depth in the draft and FA market.

I never made the assertion that they should dump Vince.

If you want to jab and posters having comprehension issues start with yourself.

Yea. That and quality of life/family. For example would he go to Seattle (3k miles away?) Not sure.

I said after the Super Bowl that Wilfork looks bigger than ever ... amazing he can play like that.

IMO ... unprofessional opinion ... he is dangerously obese and hopefully he factors that in.

He has a young family ... either he should play closer to 325 or retire and go in media.

Wilfork's agent wrote a really good statement.

Sure, Wilfork would say that he has a lot of football left in him. The alternative is to hand in his retirement papers.

The open question is how much is Wilfork willing to play when he is offered $2M guaranteed, say as part of a 2/$7M contract? I could see a $2M bonus, $1M and $4M salaries.

The patriots might offer a bit more, say 2/$8M with $3M guaranteed. Perhaps such a contract might include a $3M bonus, $1M and $4M salaries.

BTW, I consider these contract on the high end of what Wilfork will be offered.

If the patriot amount is not "enough", will Wilfork punch his body and take his kid out of school to move for one year?

I like big vince but they are other cheap options out there that might be as more productive as vince. Our run defense wasnt great on short yardage.

Yes, folks talk about our run defense as if it were a superior one. We need an UPGRADE in the 2015 run defense.

If we cannot sign an upgrade, I could see us bringing back Wilfork for his last season. The contract would likely be for two years. Incentives would be LTBE. So, I would have a a signing bonus to move some money into 2016, with the likelihood that some of the LTBE incentive would not be reached

4M cap hit? for next year? (which is what we are talking about, not 6M for next year only)

jabbing nothing.......stop making blind blanket statements

still waiting for an alternative.......give it a shot

I think he released the statement to see what other teams will offer him. But, I agree with those who say it will take a lot for him to relocate from NE and I wonder if he will get any offers for "a lot." The question I have, knowing that Vince has thrown a few fits over his contract over the years, is will his ego allow him to come back if there is nothing substantially better out there. All we can do is wait and see...

Where are you getting $4m?

Regardless what VW wanted, what we know is that the Pats did not want to pay VW $4.5 roster bonus. That could mean that they could not afford him/$8m cap/not renego now or did not think his projected performance in 2015 was worth bringing back at a $4.5m minimum. Perhaps VW and team saw...

34 year old DT Darnell Dockett signed a 2yr/7m deal w/ SF and his 1st year comp is $4m.

28 year old Ricky Jean Francois signed 3/$9m w/ $4m in guarantees/cash value in 2015.

Since those players are not as good as VW, we assume VW's contract will be > $4m in 2015. There are 10 FA DTs ranked higher than VW that could possibly get more.

According to http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2015DT.php there are 10 players ranked higher than VW. I agree with a handful of them being better than VW. Their asking price could drop after the FA period rush, the draft and once OTAs and TC start.

You also have 5 DTs in the draft that are projected to go in the top 37 picks that would be potentially less than $4m.
