Hartline is garbage. Sick of these kind of receivers. Just go get a vet who's still got it like Andre Johnson or Marshall or draft a beast.
No to Marshall. Not worth the headaches and distractions.

It would be nice if we could cut loose for once and let Brady throw to a guy downfield that knows how to get separation.

P.S. Don't for one minute think i would even try and disrespect guys like that. Edelman might just be my favourite player.
Deep threats is probably the most overrated thing in all of football. We have several receivers who knows how to get separation.

:)

No, just pointing out the Moss-like acquisitions are rare and, ultimately, unnecessary. Helpful and fun, but still unnecessary.

What's the point? DA is better...why do we need another small WR with DA already in the slot

Please sign with another team..please

Good "deep threats" can carry coverage, sometimes two or more defenders, away from the rest of the skill position players, creating more space to get open in and less players around to make the tackle. It is hardly an overrated aspect of an offense but it is certainly not required, as our team has proven for many years.

The key word there is "threat". It requires respect. The player can be a decoy much of the game but as soon as you stop showing respect the ball will go there and make you pay.

If we're going after a receiver, Andre Johnson is the only target I think would be a great fit for the Pats.

Between the return of Dobson and the upcoming Draft, I think we'll be pretty good on depth.

What's Brady's record for hitting a "deep" receiver? Hell, he almost overthrew a wide open Vereen on one long TD pass ......maybe it's just my perception that he's not a long ball thrower but his short to medium pass is fine.....

Am I wrong?

It's never been his strong suit but he's also had limited players that earned his trust to throw it deep. He tends to overthrow seemingly playing it safe. Its his guy or noone, hard to want to throw it into a tight window deep when you're not fully confident he'll make the play.

If Brady had Moss his entire career, someone who could not only burn down field but also make plays attacking the football, we'd be saying he's the best deep passer in NFL history. Moss obviously made everyone look good throwing it deep but he's not the only type of player to be good at it, there are many examples, they just haven't played for New England with Tom Brady.

How can u go deep if ur release time is 2.2 seconds?

Can't believe people are commenting that guys like Dez Bryant are 'overrated' and there is no need for them. You clearly are misunderstanding my point and don't get just how much guys who take 2 DB's with them downfield just from fear itself opens up the game for everyone. Can you imagine a receiver for the Pats doing that and what it would mean? If guys like Edelman, Gronk and Lafell kill teams from having to work in tight spaces in tight coverage, just think of what would happen if they had space? All time numbers, that's what.

Did i actually hear someone say Brady nearly overthrow Vereen? He's a 5'10 running back that managed to get open downfield, you have to be damn near perfect to get it to him in stride that's why. Now imagine if the target was a 6'2 or above receiver and had vertical speed and a big body with a real wing span, do you really think Tom Brady of all QB's would be overthrowing him? Thought not.

Did people not see the perfect deep arc he threw to Gronk in the SB when he saw the mismatch? That's what he'd be doing on a regular basis with a WR of that nature.

Some people really need to proof read before they post and think about what they're saying.

Is that you Vanilla Ice? :D

I want him. I have been a fan of his game for years now. He is held back by Tannehill the same way that Lafell was by Cam.

Sadly, it's not going to get better moving forward:

  1. The Patriots don't have a deep threat, therefore deep threats are overrated.
  2. Even though they went 18-1, the Patriots didn't win in 2007, so deep threats don't matter.
  3. Also, even though the NFC has been represented by heavy run teams in the last 3 SBs, running backs are worthless.
Welcome to football fandom "analysis" in the age of the internet. It infects pretty much every forum.

An overthrow is an overthrow......He wasn't throwing to Moss...I think Brady knew that

If the Pats are really interested in Hartline, I have to believe that Amendola's gone. he wouldn't fit with Amendola, Edelman, LaFell and Dobson, would he?

I could see them ADDING a guy like Andre Johnson if a deal was too good to pass up, but not a guy like Hartline unless there was also a substantial subtraction to be made.
