Why do players care if they make say 8 million or 12 million?

Yes, really. Google on "diminishing marginal utility of wealth" and/or "diminishing marginal utility of income".

It's a well-understood concept that economists and social scientists have discussed for decades if not centuries.

I understand the concept, but really do not believe it should be a factor for NFL players. These guys put their body on the line and could be dealing with serious long term medical consequences based on their profession.

Nevermind that they deserve as much of the revenue that they help generate as they can get. Why should the owners make so much on the backs of the players? Take those guys for as much as you can.

this thread is asinine

the fact that it has so many replies, blows my mind

Your response proves that you don't understand the concept at all.

it's all mathematics.

Any thoughts on the superbowl win?

great for the franchise, Brady, BB

the BB/Brady dynasty has been validated

if we had lost 3 after winning 3, there would have been a bittersweet element to it

brady showed that he is still elite.......still needs to watch those baffling ints

We as fans want our team to win NO MATTER WHAT, but if you step back and remember that this is a job for the players you wouldn't really knock anyone for wanting more money or coaches leaving for a promotion.

Which is why sometimes it seems strange players sometimes are not as enthusiastic about the team they are on.

Sorry not to have links, but this topic came up when the last collective bargaining agreement was being negotiated. Articles of 2/3 of the players living from paycheck to paycheck.....up to 3/4 of both NFL and NBA players going bankrupt 2-3 years after retirement.

I think of an episode of Twilight Zone and other TV shows if you suddenly win a million and get too generous helping "friends" (a few might really be - you know what I mean), not much will be left when they and the IRS are done.

I get this picture of most players not managing their money at all. Players getting Bentleys because other players have one posses, etc. HoF Coach Joe Gibbs is active with a program to encourage players to think long-term and not blow that money they won't see after retirement.

sure I will........but keep holding your breath waiting for the sky to fall
No, you won't. And I'm not holding my breath at all. Unlike you, I understand the relatively simple concept of sustainability.

I'm NO mathematical genius but difference of 4mil is a BIG gap for these guys. I'm not cryin or playin a violin for them with kind of money that's out there, all I'm sayin is they have to take into consideration that one play can end their career or be cut at any time.

Now if OP said what's difference 120mil or 130mil I'd say ego, braggin rights to be best at position.

Thank you for that insightful regurgitation of something that's been said 157,000 times on this board in the last few weeks.

You assume too much...and yes I will

i was only responding to a direct question from another poster

i could have ignored him and avoided hurting your feelings

but im a nicer person than that

It's the difference between a Chevy Colorado and a Lambo Veneno.

I always wished [Patriot] players would get together, take respectable solid paying (but team-friendly) contracts, recruit other top players, build a ridiculously dominant type of team that could 3 peat or win 5-6 SuperBowls, and make back the extra cash through endorsements, merch, appearances, etc..

This is a view from the "look how much money I have made and can spend...I have millions!". But it isn't about the money you have made and can spend, it's about the money you have made that will then make money for you to live on opulently without ever needing to work again.
For example someone gives you a ten million dollar payment for writing excellent Patsfans posts. (fyi, not happening). You then play it very safe, put the 10 million into Tax Free Munis and it makes, say, 3% annually. Great! 300k every year for life.
Now someone says "hey I need your posting more than that other employer, I'll give you 12 million". Now the interest accrual is 360k per year. You just got a 60k raise per year for life.

With that said, some players will make so much that the extra 30k a year is not anywhere near as important as career satisfaction.

After coming into a thread to tell us all how stupid we are. You didn't hurt my feelings, but if you thought your contribution somehow made this thread better, then you were wrong.

Interesting how he was posting feverishly on the board right up until the superbowl. Then the Pats won and he disappeared- only some posts in the political forum but NOT ONE comment anywhere on the forum on the SB win. Hmmmm.

Would it surprise you that the response I got from him was the first time he mentioned anything about the big SB win?

Players should care whether they make 8m vs. 12m, as posed in the original post.

Where I think that should change is when they pass up 4/50 deals on a winning team, to go somewhere else and take a 4/52 deal. Examples like that baffle me.
