we have four starting linebackers. We have woods and alexander as backups. We will sign a free agent jag or two to fill in this year as needed, and we might even still find a real prospect in the 3rd or 4th.

Next year, we will bring in a top free agent as we did this year. Did we do so badly by bringing in Thomas to replace Banta-Cain?

the prospects you find in the fourth or later arent as physically gifted
i'll admit, i wasnt as high on harris as most were here, AND im a michigan fan
but, sooner or later if we dont start drafting linebackers early we are gonna be in real trouble, and ive been sayin that for a few yrs now, and we really saw it last yr at the end, gettin adalius will help us out for a lil while, but bru is gettin old very fast, vrabel isnt the same player he was a couple yrs ago, and colvin is extremely inconsistent
we NEED young linebackers SOON

Is it clear which one you would pick? This is essentially the choice the patriots had, with the chance that the 2008 pick could be higher or lower. I would note that next year is likely to be a better draft.

I like Harris. We have wanted bb to draft a LB early for five years. We keep on insisting that we know better than he does when he shows that he strongly prefers to get linebackers from free agency and other positions through the draft.

Consider that we now have a 2008 1st to trade for a Bruschi's replacement NEXT year. Do you think just possible that we MIGHT find an ILB if we had a first to trade. In addition, we could draft a DeOssie or somesuch this year in addition. Is Harris really better than who we might draft in the 4th PLUS who might get for a !st rounder next year?

too early to tell whos gonna be avaible for next year.

BOTTOMLINE:

If I didn't like the talent in the first round this year, I would try and trade out of it to get a future #1 next year REGARDLESS of the talent pool that may be available next year.

Simple reason is: At least I give myself a chance to look at players next year who might give me the impact I want rather than just pick a player who I know doesn't have "first round talent" in this years draft just for the sake of picking someone.

Not a novel idea, but I guess I just wanted to point out that it doesn't really matter what the pool is like next year because if the same thing happened in 2008 and I realized I didn't see the value in picking someone next year, I'd trade that pick too for a first rounder in 2009 just to see if that would be the year that I could finally get my money's worth in terms of talent vs. first round money.

even if you liked harris, BB didn't.

and much too early to see whether Harris works out or our 4th, and too early to see what veteran we might get next year for the 1st. The point is that this is a reasonable trade. bb didn't value Harris as highly as poster here do.

and hey..next year means we can move up since we'll have a 2nd-3rd-4th and all other picks

i'll start dreaming about moving up for Kenny Phillips..half Taylor Half Reed and Half Machine

kids a crazy safety andhes from..MIAMI

Who cares what we think about Harris? BB and SP sure didn't like him and they know a hell of a lot more than I do.

I don't think SF will be as good as some others are posting. I see them at 7-9. Split in their division. Split with South. Beat Minny lose to NYG. 6-6 against NFC teams. They play AFC North. Baltimore and Cincy at home. I'll give them one of them. But, they could lose both. Lose at Pittsburgh. 7-8 going to Cleveland to end a disappointing season. Not a juggernaut.

Here's some high profile offensive players for next year;
Brohm - qb
Brennan - qb
Henne - QB
Booty - QB
MCFadden - rb
Stewart - RB
Manningham - wr
D.Jackson - wr
J.Long - t
S.Baker - t
J.Gaither - t
M.Oher - t

Four very good tackle prospects. Might all be better prospects than Staley.

I know that the 49er's could bust, but this is a reasonable deal even if they trun out to be as good as Seatle this year and we get #24.

A) First of all, thank you mgteich for not assuming the San Fran pick will be top ten next year. 20 sounds very reasonable.

B) Hopefully this trade means BB is high on Pierre Woods!

Rationally presented points, but there seems to be a slight tinge of "this draft is a bust" in many threads. The Pats still have nine, yes 9, picks left. I'm comfortable with the way things have unfolded so far. It's the wait that's driving people mad. For cereal.

IM well up for drafting any player who is made up of 3 halves :)

he might be more..im not sure.

a 6"2 205 + pound SAfety..from Miami..plays in the mix of Reed and Taylor. a smart kid too

mgteich, great question! It's obvious though that bb didn't like Harris as much as the rest of us. What about Houston, though? He's the guy that I like, especially if (when?) Assante holds out.

i heard in interviews that Houston didnt impress which is why he slipped

Yeah.
Okay.

But that's what i've thought for several years.
Chad Brown.
The guy married to Miss Kansas.
The kid on IR who rehabbed in Vegas.

Alright, go Pierre!
Go Eric!
Go, you Golden Domer!

ILB hope springs eternal.
Come on, Zak!
