Scouting Report: Arik Armstead, DE

Nothing really to add. You nailed it.

Great length, but the explosiveness just isn't there. I prefer Henry Anderson as a 5-tech.

Funny you should mention Anderson, he is next up on the list and will start watching him later today. Another guy I have really no exposure to so I go in with no expectations.

I should also add that I preferred Armond to his brother coming out. He was more explosive and fluid.

I think Arik should have stayed at OT.

I think Armstead is abit overrated, sure he has up side, but I wouldn't take him in top 50.

Arik is like that dress on twitter. For some reason, people seem to see two completely different things when the watch him. If he goes in the first round, I really won't believe it. Like I said in my write up, he is going to be an interesting case study, because the team that takes him high is going purely on his rare physical traits and the confidence they can develop him.

I don't really understand why he wouldn't play OT. He has the perfect body and length for it, has quick feet and hands, and would most likely have a much longer and more lucrative career.

All the things he is missing and drives scouts to drink, wouldn't matter as a tackle.

I thought maybe this was the guy that would create a good debate here, but it looks like people see what I see, at least on this site anyway. We are Patriots fans, so it would assume we are all very smart.

My reactions to a pick vary considerably:

- The "he's my guy" reaction. Elation, with a little bit of trepidation in case it doesn't work out. Examples: Dominique Easley, Jamie Collins.

- The "I'm fine with it" reaction. He wasn't "my guy" but I liked him a lot, and am generally thrilled with the pick. Chandler Jones was a good example. Owamagbe Odighizuwa would fall into this category.

- The "I'm ok with it" reaction. He wasn't my guy and I wasn't 100% sold on him, but I can understand the pick. Some of our best picks, such Dont'a Hightower, Sebastian Vollmer and Nate Solder fell into that class.

- The "hoping for the best" reaction. I really don't understand the pick, but IBIT. Armstead would fall into this category for me. There've been a lot of these.

- The "jumping off the Tobin" reaction. I really disliked this prospect, and wanted no part of him. I'll hope for the best, but I really don't like this pick. Fortunately there haven't been that many of these.

This question goes out to all of you because I have struggled with it.
With the Patriots playing more 4-3 and 4-2-5 last year and drafting guys like Easley and Collins, where do guys like Armstead and Anderson fit?
I think 5-7 years ago a guy like Anderson might be higher on my board because he is a great fit for a 5 tech that could produce without having to spend a high pick on him.
Now, their fit in the scheme is muddied and I am trying to see the fit. Someone suggested Anderson as a sub for Ninkovich and I don't see that at all.
If you like these guys, or even if you don't, I would like to hear your take on their fit and role on this team as we move forward.

I'm with you. I little while back I posted about how this board would have been drooling over Henry Anderson back in the day, but much as I might like to I just can't plug him into the current Patriots defense.

Armstead is OK to me, but from the Oregon games I watched (which weren't many) I always came away more impressed with DeForest Buckner.

Both Armstead and Anderson have the height but don't really have the bulk. I don't think it's a problem looking at five tech frames, just look at Branch and Kelly, they just need to be nearer 320lbs rather than 300lb.

I don't know If we will get a chance to grab him, chip Kelly and Oregon east will probably grab him.

I'm gonna laugh if he does 3 1st round picks and Foles for Mariota

I think he could trade up if he gets past the jets at 6. Maybe the Bears at 7
