RUMOR: Revis "to hit the market?"

My guess is that McCourty walks and Revis stays. Belichick and Revis both realize that's is in their best interests for Revis to remain in New England and they find a way to get it done.

Unfortunately keeping Revis will make it tough to sign DMac. That would be a lot of $$$ spent on the secondary.

However if Revis did leave the Pats I'd love it if he went to the Jets. The Jets have holes all over their roster, it would be dumb for them to tie up tons of money on one position. The only reason they would do it would be to make the back pages.

Better for Revis to go to the jets than to go to the Ravens or another contender

Is DMac gone a foregone conclusion? I am pretty sure the diffference is a couple of million. Can he actually make more then earl thomas?
If he can get the Raiders and Jaguars in a bidding war against each other then anything is possible.

If he hits the market there is going to be great demand for him. Safety is incredibly weak in this draft and there are a good number of teams looking for help at the position. I just looked at the Tennessee and Jacksonville message boards to see what their fans were thinking about the draft and both were focused upon free agency and McCourty and Suh were the two players whose names were brought up the most. If McCourty signs here it will be at a home team discount because he is going to set a new bar for safeties if he hits the open market.

You're probably right about what would happen but he's not a "set a new bar for safeties" kind of Safety. I'd love to have him back - I'm not talking down a player who might leave - but he's certainly not the best Safety out there, even if someone is willing to pay him as such.

I'm laid up with a back injury so I have wayyyyyy too much time on my hands and decided to go in draft order and check out team message boards to see what fan bases were thinking about. So far I have looked at the top four and each one has had McCourty in their sights. I think there are a number of reasons for this, one being the limelight that comes with a Super Bowl win, another the dearth of good safeties around the league and in free agency, and the last being the really weak draft class. All factors work in McCourty's favor and while I agree he isn't as good a player as Thomas III is free agency is more about demand and money available than it is about ranking. If he hits the market and signs somewhere else I think it will be the biggest contract for a safety to date.

neither side wants this option to be exercised

age is an issue. yes, revis may get alot of money for this year, but he may also not play as well and there goes his chance for the big money that he wanted.....he is not going to get the same offers next year heading to 31 years of age. he needs the deal this year.

Sorry, I disagree with your assessment. I think that the Revis camp is totally ok with the Pats picking up the option and hitting FA again next year. I don't see the risk for him, he has a big name and one down year will not affect his value that much. Yes, a serious injury would most probably be devastating but that's part of the reason to get a long term contract done in the first place.

Anyway, we will most probably know in less than a week. Lets see..

I agree but I just don't see McCourty going to perennial losers. I think Oakland is going to go hard after Suh and Randall Cobb and if they land both they will take an edge pass rusher like Fowler or Ray on the draft. They could also double dip at receiver and pay Cobb and Draft Cooper or White. I wouldn't be surprised if they went after Murray as well, after all its the Raiders and they shop like Kardashians.

The Colts forum is drooling over McCourty too

Yep. He's going to have a real money or more rings decision to make. Belichick is going to have to make his move before free agency because he's going on tour if he gets there. I won't be surprised if he get 10 a year.

Howe is very optimistic revis deal gets done

Which is weird to me, because Mike Adams was fine last year and they'd be competing with a lot fewer teams for Adams than McCourty. Maybe they should focus on some front 7 guys if they want to avoid getting blown out in the inevitable "Deflategate revenge" game.

Someone (maybe that's you) tweeted the same thing.

@jeffphowe drop the knowledge right now on @985TheSportsHub. Very optimistic about Revis deal getting done.

Belowis from Howe's article this morning. Nothing earth-shattering but good insight into Revis's thought process.

I feel strongly about the information I've gained about Revis in the last few months that winning is the most important thing to him at this stage in his career. He left $4 million on the table last March to join the Patriots, and I've been given the impression he'll do it again to play for a winner. Those close to him have said he has already discussed the intriguing possibility of winning back-to-back Super Bowls with the Pats.

They just replayed a snippet from Howe this morning and he seemed to think 5/$60M would get it done.

I assume at that rate a large amount would be guaranteed.

Knock on wood.

I hope so. I stated in another thread that if Revis sees ~$30m in the first 2 years and the cap hit makes it reasonable to restructure or cut him in 2017 when he is 33 and not at an all-pro level anymore BUT can be an excellent slot/nickle or safety then it's worth doing 5 years.

I just feel like we've gotta keep Revis and do whatever it takes. He's worth the money because he influences the game like VERY FEW other players. When he's out there he erases half the field. It covers up other weaknesses and allows us to double team other WRs/TEs as well as blitz.

I absolutely believe we would not have won the Championship without him last year. And we need him to repeat.
