Life without Revis and McCourty

I hope not but it may be the case. We all know that the team has had a difficult time retooling the secondary through the draft. At a point we opted to throw money at the right guys in FA and worked it out. Of all the DBs we drafted, Devin and Asante stand out but that's about it. The others from more recent years? (I'm sure I am missing some).

Chung
Meriweather
Dennard
Tavon
Wheately
Wilhite (was he a UDFA?)
Dowling
Butler

It sure has been a struggle and the draft has mostly been a failure in his department.
Wilhite was a 4th rounder.

You can speculate to say that not hitting on Wheatley, Wilhite, Darius Butler, Dowling and Tavon could cost them McCourty this year.

You can also say that they would have not won the SB this year but possible have won SB 46.

Butler and Ryan will replace them as NE brings in Suh.

I kid.

Whats the backup plan? Will dennard start in place of revis? Will
they go back to drafting secondary players?
I think harmon will take over for mccourty and possibly butler taking over for revis if they should leave. You know BB, next man up. If they cut revis, we save 20 mil in cap. We might be able to sign a bargain basement free agent.

I'll bite. How?

The theory is that IF...IF...Dowling assumed a #1 CB role, Wilhite or Wheatley played CB #2 and Butler played slot better than Arrington, they'd have the money to pay DMC.

With that said, by 2014 Wheatley, Wilhite and Butler would be on their second deals.

The other killer is the Leigh Bodden injury. In 2010 he signed a 4 year deal and in theory, if he played like he did in 2009, would have been a perennial starter.

I can't blame BB for spending a combined $16m in 2014 on CBs. With the exception of DMC rookie year and Arrington's put of nowhere 7 INTs, from 2008 to 2013 it was failure after another.

Can we just agree that losing both of them would be an unprecedented colossal failure of upper management?

I said both guys would be back. I am sticking with that. Just my hunch.

It is interesting thinking of what we should do if both would end up leaving.

How would you guys say it would change the plan in Free Agency from just retaining our own guys? Would it give us more leverage to go after other guys?

If they lost both revis and mccourty Id be convinced that they are "satisfied" with the title they just won and aren't serious about repeating. However, I can't see this happening. Belichick pays elite talent, revis is elite.

Apparently you haven't been following the pats long enough to know what a true failure of management is. In the Billy Sullivan era of ownership the Pats lost the best cornerback ever to play for the Pats Michael Haynes over money. In the 90's the Pats lost Parcells and Curtis Martin and turned over the team to the incompetent Booby Grier who turned a Superbowl team into a loser despite having a multitude of draft picks. While losing Revis would be a serious blow and McCourty a lesser and more replaceable loss, you assuredly underestimate the capability of BB in putting together a defense.

Nope. The Patriots need to make really strong bids for both players but if they offer Revis 15-16 a season with a big guarantee and he chooses to try and get 18-20 then it's not on the Patriots it's Revis decision to max out financially. Same goes with McCourty, if they are offering 8 million a season with really good guaranteed money and he chooses to go for top dollar then that's his choice. The Patriots didn't get to where they are by giving every player more than everyone else would pay them they got there by being smart and understanding market value. I want both back as much as anyone here but that doesn't mean you give them a blank check.

No doubt. I am pretty sure the pats will put a great offer on the table. If the jets wanna overpay then what can you do?

I'm no deep strategist but I'm terrified of the future here.

The Patriots win, it seems to me, through complex, sometimes brilliant game plans; mistake-free play; excellent execution; hard work; teamwork; unselfish play; great personal character; and unusually smart, adaptive players. There just aren't that many players who can do well in this kind of a system, and it usually takes a while for new players to adapt to the Patriots system.

Now that we've reached the point of very possibly losing both players, the ostriches can take their heads out of the sand and join the discussion. An apology to the OP from some of you might be in order also.

Is that the feeling and opinion from the clown car?

Maybe you post another stupid comment and draw iapatsfan and pastradumbazz out in the open.

And sometimes they win because players make a clutch play....or dont.

Some of you are comical.

I agree that it is an intriguing topic of discussion. It certainly is not out of the realm of possibility that both depart; we have all seen personnel movement that caught us by more of a surprise than this would be.

You and I will agree to agree to disagree on the absoluteness of his prediction - which is fine also.

Hope all is well with you OTG, look forward to even more of your insight and analysis as we approach draft day.

Thank you kindly, Brother Jam. It shall be forthcoming!! :D

will they or won't they?
