RUMOR: Revis "to hit the market?"

taking a discount and being the highest paid CB? how does that work?

He is going to be the highest paid CB no matter what. There is a difference of being the highest paid CB by $500k - 1 million a year or by $2-3 million a year.

@MMehtaNYDN: Sources: Jets' Woody Johnson involved in serious internal talks to make a run @ Darrelle Revis http://t.co/PdQ1DxVBDJ http://t.co/yJaXvazfGh

@AlbertBreer: Re: @MMehtaNYDN story ... My feeling is if Revis hits the market next week, the Jets will be creative in their pursuit. Beyond just money.

@AlbertBreer: Remember, Jets coach Todd Bowles had a $14M/year corner in AZ, and GM Mike Maccagnan saw Texans pay top-of-market $$$ for Johnathan Joseph.

So how about that tampering charge, Roger?

I still wonder if the Jets are even on Revis' radar anymore. I think he wanted to go back to the Jets to play for Rex, not be a Jet again. If he is going to just be a paid mercenary, they will be. But if he cares about where he plays over just dollars and cents, I am guessing he doesn't even look at the Jets other than to drive up the asking price for the Pats, Bills, and whatever team he actually wants to play for.

I'm confused. Last I looked, Revis was a Patriot, employed by the Patriots with another year on his contract.

The whispers coming out of New York are that they're preparing to blow him away if he hits the market. clearly this type of talk hurts the negotiating process the Pats are in - if you're Revis, why would you begin to make an extension if there's someone out there talking like this?

In essence, Woody is forcing the Patriots to pick up the placeholder option.

How is this not tampering? This is not only tampering, but the damages being caused to a competitor are right out in the open!

Rob said it best. Unless it's completely purely about $, why is Revis going back there?

If he does go to the Jets, then we absolutely will have a tampering case, and we should be compensated.

im sick of the whole thing. i think hes gone.

In the end, Revis will have to decide what is more valued by him...

Wrong!

We have a slam dunk tampering case regardless.

Emphasis is mine.

What could they do besides offer more money that wouldn't be in violation of the CBA? I would assume any kind of ownership promise, stock, or other form of future compensation would be a circumvention of the cap. But what else could they be talking about?

I am just curious if this is about the guarantee money. Idk. I just wonder how you replace two key guys on your secondary. Big question marks.

If he goes to the Jets, it's obvious it's all about money, obviously not about winning (Jets are awful). I would root even harder against the Jets if he goes there. But they certainly have the cap space.

Leaks like this are not tampering. They happen all the time. It is a creative way around tampering. But the legal tampering period starts in a few days anyway.

Legal tampering doesn't apply to player's under contract, only to free agents.

Reacting to today's media reports, I find it hard to believe that Revis would return to New Jersey...but "you never know."

Otherwise, I think Jests' mediots and fans are engaging in wishful thinking on multiple fronts.

They want to wish away the Tannenbaum/Idzik error.

They want to wish away the fact that they have a clueless owner.

They want to wish away the reality that their team has to comtemplate possibly drafting for their third "franchise" QB in the last seven or so years if Mariota falls to #6.

They want to wish away the immature blowhard that Rex Ryan proved to be.

And, in this case, they want to wish away the fact there is little likelihood that a talent like Revis, who now knows what it is like to be part of a well-managed franchise, would return to the clown circus in the Meadowlands.

I submit that this is very different given Woody's open statement a few weeks ago. it is clear that the JEST are making a big play for Revis, and it's possible they're only doing it to force the Patriots' hand. Things like this are exactly why tampering rules (which have been enforced with a heavy hand in the past) are necessary.

That's true. I keep forgetting he isn't a true free agent until the Pats decide not to pick up the option (assuming they do or they cannot get a long term deal done).

But the Rats have also clearly publicly tampered, the Pats reported it to the league, and the league has done nothing.

The Rats are emboldened by the league ignoring their tampering and don't seem concerned about upping the ante.

Are we at the point yet where BB or Kraft need to risk a fine and embarrass the league about their inaction on the clear tampering, and making a public statement?

The farce of investigating the Pats for Deflategate while ignoring real transgressions by Goodell's favored franchise is beyond ridiculous.

Seriously, does it really matter? Do the Pats and Revis think that he won't be the most sought after free agent in free agency if the Pats release him? Even if the Jets didn't say anything, do people not think that there won't be at least a half dozen teams lining up to make him the highest paid CB in football, possibly the highest paid defensive player?

Every team tampers. I am not going to be a hypocrite and argue that a lot of teams filmed defensive signals when the Pats get caught and then act morally outraged when Woody Johnson acts like an idiot and blatantly tampers in a press conference.

Revis and his agent have been speaking with many teams about what they will offer him if the Pats release him. Let's not kid ourselves. Revis already has offers from other teams. So does Suh, Julius Thomas, and every other big time free agent. It happens every year.

Woody Johnson is an idiot and should receive a punishment for it. But let's not kid ourselves. Rex Ryan and the Bills have already made offers to Revis' agent. I bet the Raiders and others have too.

Deflategate is stupid. Burt so is outrage for the stupidity of Woody Johnson. Give him a fine and/or take away a low round draft pick and be done with it. Nothing he said changed the bargaining power of the Patriots or whether Revis was going to negotiate with the Patriots. Johnson just did publicly that a bunch of other teams did under the radar at the Combine.
