One way extremely rich people can spend their money.. nice digs.

I would love to own a large house. Having had a 3-bedroom 1870's farmhouse for 20 years I can say from experience that the mortgage payments, insurance, taxes, etc, pale in comparison to the work and funds it takes to maintain it and live in it. Heat & electric costs, just the constant sweeping, dusting and vacuuming are more than most folks realize, especially with an older house. You really need either a large family or some domestic help to make it all work. Guys like JJ have no problem with that because of the salaries they make. Us other guys, though.......

Those log chairs are an abomination. Hope he didn't insist they come with the house. The entire interior has the decor of one of those wood-panel 1970s station wagons. Wow. What taste he must have. :) I realize it is a "log cabin" but not everything has to be made of wood inside. I think even the refrigerator is made of wood.

Woodgate.

We lived in an 1820's farmhouse in Maine, was built when it was Massachusetts.. as much as we loved the house, the granite slab foundation had huge holes along with the pumpkin pine floor boards... despite two quality wood stoves it was a bytch to heat.

We loved the location and the house, but anytime you needed to do a repair it became a huge chore as nothing was square and the framing then was not what we know now.. we moved for reasons that had nothing to do with the house.

I would even argue that that's a false luxury. What happens when JJ Watt retires? Does he have enough money from playing in the NFL to pay for that kind of service for the rest of his life? Chances are at some point, spending like that will force him to downscale his lifestyle, and once you're used to a certain level of convenience it's VERY hard to go back to normal living. Hell, on my tiny normal person small scale, I've been living in an apartment that has a washer/dryer included for so long, if I had to go back to using a communal laundry room I'd probably lose my mind.

I'm looking towards the opposite end of the spectrum. I would love to buy one of those "tiny homes" and live somewhere nice, like maybe in Napa or Sonoma California. Those things are cool. Some people are living in 150-300 square foot homes. I'm fascinated by these things. Though I would need one in the range of 400 sf. I am starting to hate CITY life, especially living in the cesspool known as NY. Though born and raised in NYC, after living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 7 years (1999-2006), I am hating being back in NY.

Much liek deflate gate, this cabin thing got blown way out of proportion

I guess living in MA give a little different perspective... This is really not a big or expensive house. Heck, median US sq footage is about 2600, and ~350K price. He is only roughly double that. I'm sure his lifetime income is WAY over double the US median. ;-)

Not my taste. The person who put up the window valence in the office ought to be shot.

$800k for watt is small change. You can't even buy a nice house (not condo) for that much in Boston or Cambridge. But I'd rather pay $800k to own a small apartment in Cambridge than a big house in the middle of freaking nowhere.

Looks like the furnishings are from the previous owner, who must be the tackiest person alive.

I hear ya. After we left the farmhouse, I bought a small home, single-story, that has 840 square feet. The realtor called it a Ranch House, but I think it's better referred to as a Bungalo. But it's nice and just the right size.
