McCourty now has a choice to make

So much drama. Every new season is its' own entity. 14 years straight we've gone into a season having a shot at the ring, yet still zero trust that BB and the Pats braintrust know what they have to do to field a competitive team.

such a spoiled fanbase...

Yea it really is absurd.. 4 Superbowl victories, 6 appearances, 8+ AFCCG appearances, the best winning percentage in the league over the last 15 or so years, the most division wins over the last 15 or so years...

Yet random Joe Nobodies on an internet forum love to pretend like they're these super geniuses that know more than Belichick when it comes to running a football team.

It's truly unbelievable.. humans are pretty messed up and full of ego.

weird..denver can afford talib, ward, chris harris jr, and manning.

yet we can't afford revis/mccourty while brady takes a paycut? what am i missing??

The Broncos have absolutely no depth, they have a very weak middle class and just went after a bunch of household name players, some of them past their prime. They also have/had a ton of top talent on rookie deals that are extremely cap friendly.

As they start to resign some of these guys who's deals are up, they're going to spend that extra cap space up real quick. Welker comes off the books though which frees up another $6 mill, this will be their last big hurrah in FA and then they'll be back down to earth like everyone else going forward.

If 8 million can keep Devin on board then jettison Wilfork and get the money there.

well, I, for one , certainly fit that description. The humans I want making decisions running the team that I derive so much enjoyment from are those with big enough egos NOT to mess up and give in to the howling mob. I want Marcus Aurelius running my team, not Commodus.(obscure Gladiator reference)

Not sure if somebody already posted what Loyko said on Twitter but here it is:

Spoke to some people on McCourty this next serious of tweets is related to that.

Belichick isn't just the best judger of the most, he's the best at juding personalities.. Specifically those players that are loyal and..
— Mike Loyko (@NEPD_Loyko) March 3, 2015

and have emotional connection to the team. Strategy is now let another team set the market, pitch McCourty, Patriots will comeback to ..
— Mike Loyko (@NEPD_Loyko) March 3, 2015

him with their price and McCourty will have to decide whether he wants the extra money or the legacy.
— Mike Loyko (@NEPD_Loyko) March 3, 2015

This is the reason why the Patriots haven't even opened negotiations with McCourty. #Patriots already know their number. They'll jump in..
— Mike Loyko (@NEPD_Loyko) March 3, 2015

when they're ready and it will be their bottomline number. the Player understands that as does the agent.
— Mike Loyko (@NEPD_Loyko) March 3, 2015

Lastly "Belichick has contingencies on top of contingencies. If McCourty doesn't take the offer, he won't sweat it, it's on to the next one"

Sounds like business as usual to me. So no reason to go crazy until DMac actually signs a contract somewhere else..

It's not that I don't trust you, I just think there's no way you can know this.

For all you know they are content with HARMON.

"Trust me" it's just a figure of speech.

Seriously, stop writing and read up (or look at some All22 tape) on what DMac's role in our defense is. While the damn camera shows you the ball going to one side of the field, he is part of the reason the other side (that often contains the big name receivers) is not thrown towards by the QB. His range limits a lot of throws the opponent QB can do safely.

That consistent "doesn't make a huge amount of plays" from people is getting annoying. It is very similar to the folks in game threads that are angry that Gronk is "not used often enough" in a game even though his presence alone creates mismatches. In the same way DMac doesn't need to be at the place a play goes towards to have an effect on the play.

I will just say this, even though I love McCourty as a player, stating that he doesn't make plays is a valid criticism.

Ed Reed made a ton of plays, because he was a step ahead of the QB. McCourty stays deep and has good range, but he isn't making plays. The best safeties make plays by reading the QB's mind based on the offense on the field and the defense being called. McCourty managed to keep QBs from throwing deep, but he never really managed to make a lot of plays that the top safties make all the time.

Not discussed by the Patriots. If he were unable to play due to injury, he would be on the injury reports. There's been a lot of speculation by mediots and fans. I put zero stock in speculation about the Patriots.

At the end of the day, the reason doesn't really matter. Dennard was not able to make active game day rosters through much of 2014.

Considering he ended up on IR, that's a good bet that he was hurt at some point. I also recall him being on the report prior to being placed on IR, so it wasn't just that week.

Ed Reed is also perhaps the greatest free safety in the history of the league. If you only pay for that level of performance, you aren't going to have very many players.

Love the reference, Gladiator is one of my top 3 movies of all time!

The thing is that everyone likes to think that they're a Marcus Aurelius when in reality they're more like a blacksmith or a potter, than an Emperor of Rome.

Belichick is a great man, truly one of a kind and special. So I always find amusement in people who have menial day jobs questioning him on a subject that few, if any people walking on planet earth could hold a candle to in terms of knowledge, nevermind leadership.

Offseasons are fun though ;) I picture BB after all the spygate and deflategate garbage saying Maximus' line about having his vengeance.

"My name is William Stephen Belichick, commander of the Patriots of the North, General of the New England legion and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Robert Kraft. Coach of a slandered team, ambassador to a persecuted fanbase. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next!"

It's been obvious to me that keeping both Revis and DMac is almost impossible. Like I said, if I had had possibility to take one of them I would have followed with Revis at once. Both are great players, but Revis is more valuable to the team, it's really hard to replace him. But....I'm affraid we could lose them both. DMac frankly says, that he wants to stay and he understands the situation. Someone on the forum said DMac is loyal and BB knows that.Ok, but dreaming of the money and not knowing the exact value for the other team is a one thing. But getting real money given by the other team on the paper it's a different story. We all know money talks and change the way of thinking. I hope I'm wrong and DMac will be back. The worst of all is to lose DMac and Revis. Probably The Pats are prepering him an offer, but in my opinion if Revis doesn't accept it and wants to test the market, he will be gone too. But in BB we trust:)

The history major in me is dying with this reference. If BB was like Marcus Aurelius he'd basically make Steve Belichick Jr. Defensive Coordinator and Asst. Head coach for no good reason. Marcus Aurelius naming Commodus his heir and not recognizing his dud of a kid ended the Pax Romana and contributing in sending the Roman empire from it's absolute peak to its fall 250 years later.

Anyways I'm done nerding it up, and I'll go give myself a wedgie now.

Remember when Belichick drafted McCourty and everyone was like WTF? A few years later he's the greatest safety to ever play the game and Belichick is insane for not paying him top dollar.

I'm glad Bill is making the decisions and not us.

These tweets are interesting, but why have the market set the terms ? If you know your bottom line number, why not make that offer now. Since you won't budge from that offer, why waste time ?

Belichick does not want the player to be able to take the Pats offer and use it as leverage to drive up offers from other teams.

He wants the player to have all the information he needs to make a decision when the Pats offer their take it or leave it deal.

Cant help but laugh at the idea of the hypothetical Patriots downfall being a parallel to the fall of Rome. :D

If we're phrasing it in either/or language, I guess the way I'd put it is that I'd be okay if the cost of keeping Revis meant we'd lose McCourty. I wouldn't feel the same way in the reverse.

Ideally you'd keep both, of course. And in most conversations it seems like keeping Wilfork and Mayo might theoretically be a salary cap impediment to keeping the CB/S combo. Again, if in either/or language, I'd ditch both VW and JM at this point. Two of these guys are in their prime and healthy and the other two are not. Not a hard call at all from that (admittedly simplified) perspective. It's taken how many years to put together a secondary that got it done again and it's horrible to think of not having it together for at least a few years. That unit can try to cover for some (potential) faults on the front 7 like happened in reverse for the past decade.

I haven't waded through all the pages, but has anyone mentioned his brother's contract extention? It was in Aug of 2012 and Jason is a CB, but I think it's a pretty good measuring stick. 5 yrs 43mil 20 guaranteed. I think for the amount of years, a similar contract would be a bargain in the long run.

Unfortunately, it makes too much sense that Vince will be gone. We need him to take a pay cut, and I think he's more than justified in saying "no."
