McCourty now has a choice to make

The "DMac dosent make big plays" strategy has been tried here several times and shot down. It dosent work.

Seriously, stop writing and read up (or look at some All22 tape) on what DMac's role in our defense is. While the damn camera shows you the ball going to one side of the field, he is part of the reason the other side (that often contains the big name receivers) is not thrown towards by the QB. His range limits a lot of throws the opponent QB can do safely.

That consistent "doesn't make a huge amount of plays" from people is getting annoying. It is very similar to the folks in game threads that are angry that Gronk is "not used often enough" in a game even though his presence alone creates mismatches. In the same way DMac doesn't need to be at the place a play goes towards to have an effect on the play.

I know his role in the defense, I understand that the ball goes one way because he might be the other way. Over the course of 19 games, I would have liked to see more from a 10 million dollar a year safety that is "close to Earl Thomas". Acting like you're far more educated on this than others only makes you look like an ass. I'm not saying he's a bad player just that if the team needs to pay at the top of the market, the player better be the best in the league. Revis is, McCourty is not.

I'm just saying, if he walks and they resign Revis the team will be right back where they were this year, assuming health.

Harmon + 8 million in cap space doesn't necessarily mean you lose more games.

Ryan + 10 million in cap space doesn't necessarily mean you lose more games than if you have Revis.

Painter + 14 million in cap space doesn't necessarily mean you lose more games than if you have Brady.

Hell, no Brady + no Gronk + no Revis + no McCourty + ZERO in cap space doesn't necessarily mean you lose more games.

We can play that nonsense game all day long.

Or we can just admit that having Harmon starting instead of McCourty means you're losing more games.

People should be more concerned when DMC is supposed to make a play and doesn't or is supposed to be at a certain spot at a certain time and isn't.

The team needs to ascertain that information at determine if the alternative can do those things better, at the same level or at an acceptable level cheaper.

It seems to me that DMC is above-average in all those areas. The question is....are those performance levels worth $9m AAV. Also seems to me that the defense is worse without him.

If you are aware of it all then please stop saying things like "he should make more plays" because it is utter ********. This makes you sound like someone who does not know what he is talking about.

Anyway.. whatever, lets just agree to disagree. I am pretty confident that when all is said and done we will have both DMac and Revis back with us in 2015.

And boy are they insufferable during free agency
Its like a game day thread with the team down and the game never ends

weird..denver can afford talib, ward, chris harris jr, and manning.

yet we can't afford revis/mccourty while brady takes a paycut? what am i missing??

2013 Pats: 12-4
2014 Pats: 12-4
Oops.

Both statements are untrue because these moves do not happen in a vacuum. You have Harmon start instead of McCourty and have someone else start at another spot that is an improvement over last year.

I mean to say he does not make enough plays for a top of the market safety, you can substitute plays for impact as well. Agree to disagree is right, I'll be thrilled if both are back. My preference would obviously be for that, but if it costs us Revis then I understand.

Also another thought, they couldn't tag McCourty because then they lose leverage with Revis because keeping him on his 20 million dollar option becomes impossible given that they would then be 20 million over the cap and only have a week to find 20 million dollars of cap space. That option is probably their last resort with Revis and they're willing to accept McCourty going to market as the price of keeping it available.

That stuff means nothing. First of all Denver diddnt win anything.

Second you would have to go look at how each team spread ita cap money around the roster. If Denver has a ton of cap tied up in 6 players and holes elsewhere it dosent work.

There is too much money tied up in our o-line

Why not just cut ties with Wilfork if he won't take a pay cut, get rid of the dead wood on the o-line, draft in those 2 areas and sign up Revis and DMac? Use what's leftover to bring back some other key components like Vereen if he wants it.

With Gost getting franchised:

1.Resign with the Patriots for about 8-9 million a year (just my guess)

2. Sign somewhere else and be the highest paid safety in the league for about 10-11 million a year (destinations include: Indy, Oakland, Tennessee)

If the Colts offer him the deal above and he can be the face of a defense that will be Superbowl contenders for years to come, his choice seems obvious.

@AdamSchefter: Unless Patriots re-sign him before next week, Devin McCourty is going to be one hotly-pursued free agent.

Here we go.

The question is what BillB's $$ value is on McCourty. If it is below 8m/yr, McCourty plays for another team.

We don't know if VW will take a pay cut.

What dead wood on the line do you speak of?Connolly is a FA. Stork has a rookie deal. Wendy played for peanuts. Vollmer was close to all-pro. The team needs to decide how to extend Solder but I wouldn't classify him as deadwood.

Revis and DMC will cost you ~$60m in guarantees and (speculating) $30m in 2015.

What would you pay Vereen?

Possible, but I have the feeling that if we come to a point where the Pats need to flex this kind of muscle then the negotiations are already far away from a "good place". In the end, contract negotiations are such weird animals that I don't even want to speculate what is going on.

Whatever happens in the next 2-3 weeks, given history I have full faith into BB et al to come up with a competitive team for 2015. They appreciate the players they have, will go to whatever lengths they consider fair to retain them. This is why we are a contender season after season.

If you think that not having Mankins didn't contribute significantly to those two early losses, and the poor overall play in those first 4 weeks, I've got a bridge in the desert that I'd be happy to sell you.

Your argument sucks. I'm sorry, but that's just the truth of it.
