Browner Butler Dennard Chung and Harmon, more than enough talent for 19-0...

they'll be gone soon enough. Then we'll see! I think Belichick relishes the chance to win with so called mediocre players. He makes a fair offer then he walks.

I know it's the off season, and you've been posting the sort of gibberish that one would expect during such times, but come on with this "enough talent for 19-0" crap.

That is exactly it. You are brilliant.

I am assuming the Pats have already made an offer that will make pay him right up with Sherman and Peterson ($14MM/yr) If that's the case, what is the need for leverage? Does he really expect the Pats to pay him a PREMIUM to the top of the market for a 30 yr old CB? I think he knows how that ends.

$14MM/yr IS the top of the market. This is the price players who are younger and more physically gifted are getting. If Revis expects more than he will be gone from NE and all the stories Jets fans have been telling us will be true.

The reason I don't think its true is because of the silence. If the negotiations were contentious or far apart, both sides would have been leaking tidbits to the media trolls setting up their positions in the coming divorce. That's why I find the silence so telling

Another thing to remember. Remember during the Welker negotiations, according to virtually EVERYONE $8MM/yr was the absolute floor to get a contract done with Wes and even that would have been a bargain for the Pats. So when it was leaked that the final offer was $5.5MM plus incentives that got it close to $7MM, the Welker-philes were outraged at the insulting offer...... And were stunned when the best he could get was $6MM from Denver with no incentives.

The point being that the Pats are pretty good at knowing what the market is going to be. If someone is willing to over pay, so be it. That's the way it goes. They will do what they did with the Talib negotiation. They will move on..... and when it was announced that Talib had chosen the Denver offer, who would have thought at the time we would upgrade. ;)

BTW - anyone know the at what time the franchise tags have to be in by?

I didn't say they'd go 19-0, just that it's enough talent.

They won a superbowl with Earthwind Moreland and Randall Gay.

You're being obtuse. Willfully so. No need for that.

I'm not being obtuse. You're either trolling, or you've lost your mind.

And winning a Super Bowl is not the same thing as going 19-0.

Would anyone be surprised in the least? Did you really think Revis wasn't going to at least test the market/ leverage any offers before making a decision? He would be almost dumb not to. He is going to be 30, this is likely his last pay day, and he just played for the Patriots for a discount. The most we can ask of him is to allow the Patriots to match or come close to his best offer.

This is why I started a very long, highly debated thread about whether or not to pick up Year 2, with the premise that there is no way we are signing him to an extension before free agency. And I argued, and still do argue, the Patriots should pick up year 2 of his contract, which takes away much of his leverage, and then try to extend him. At that point, he wouldn't see free agency until 31 and risks injuries/skills declining this next season, and I think that's how we can get him on a 13-14M deal without insane player guarantees.
This would make a LOT of sense if the Pats weren't in the cap bind to get under the $143MM by 3/10. Even if the Pats did simply pick up the option and let McCourty walk, they'd still be several Million over the cap with only a week to create the space. To try and keep both would be next to impossible in that scenario.

I understand what you are saying and its a good strategy, but......

Belichick can't let these guys go, especially Revis. We won nothing in 10 years without Revis. Then we pick up Revis and win in the first year? This guy has GOT to get locked up..

No player is indispensable. Economics must be a factor. Lucky for us, BB is better at this **** than anyone, so I trust him to do what is best for the team.

Hear hear! That's exactly right I think. Revis will price himself at the exact level which makes someone like BB not willing to pay him. Anything less is leaving money on the table for him!

Interesting that neither side has leaked any numbers (true for all Pat FAs). With Welker there were rumors all over the place.

AS great as Revis is I dont buy the we cant win it all without him. That sounds like things fans of other teams say. Would be great to keep him though.

Browner
Butler
Harmon
Chung

Legion of BILL
As shocking as it would be to lose BOTH Revis and McCourty, the sad/interesting fact would be that the 4 man secondary you mention above, would be significantly better than the one that somehow got us to the Superbowl in 2011. This a thought. ;)

It's a good thing you are always, and I really mean always, dead wrong. And all anyone who doesn't believe this needs to do is just go back and read your posts. Talk about complete and utter garbage, you take the cake for it. Christ, you even make Steve from Fall River look like. an optimist.

Yep. Good enough to win the SB. Plenty of talent. He drafted Harmon high for a reason.

I love how some people on here suggest Revis is going to settle for mediocrity with teams like the Bills or Jets. He'll be a Pat at a very good price for he and us, bank on it.

I truly think he is going to leave. I view Revis much like I do Peyton when it comes to contracts. They always want to be the highest paid player at their position by a fair margin(personally would do the same). Sherman money isn't high enough for a guy who is possibly still in his prime and coming off a super bowl victory.

It would suck if he leaves, but as long as Gronk and our offense in general stays healthy our chances to repeat remains about the same imho. Our offense really showed up this post season not really our defense. Besides the Colts, we didn't really keep the Ravens or Seahawks off of the scoreboard. BB will somehow make our defense good enough regardless if we lose McCourty and Revis. See 2011 year with Sterling Moore playing the role of Malcolm Butler to a far lesser degree.

Both Revis and the Patriots are tough negotiators. What if Revis decides to hit the market and pays a visit to Baltimore to see what they might offer. I can imagine that alone would pressure the Patriots to increase their offer.

Revis isn't even gone yet and already people are starting to diminish his importance to the defense. Waiting for the Wilfork thread...
