Let's say McCourty walks. What is the plan?

I prefer they keep Mccourtey on a reasonable long term deal. If his market is too high, I'll be alright if he walks. In that case, I'd hope they can draft a safety high and hope they don't miss. So basically, throw Wilson/Ryan/Rookie draft pick on the wall and see what sticks.

I think it's obvious we aren't going to sign both McCourtey and Revis, it'll be one or the other. I'd be SHOCKED if we lost both. As much as I love McCourtey, I prefer we get Revis signed if we can't have both. That being said, BB won a SB despite Law and Poole going down in 2004, with a rookie 3rd round pick (Assante Samuel) and an undrafted rookie FA (Randal Gay) playing in their place.

True but that was before the Colts complained to the league (sound familiar) about the Pats playing roughly in the secondary which led to all the rule changes to accomodate Peyton.
I think the Pats can get by w/o McCourty although he's a great Patriot and in the prime of his career.

mccourty has to stay..just tag him already.
do not let him hit the open market.

I'm 99% sure they won't tag him.

From overthecap.com, the top 5 safety contract. Something in the 9M range for AAV seems appropriate. A long-term deal might allow us to have a lower first year cap-hit.

How do you all think Harmon compares to McCourty? He's clearly not as good, but I don't think he's awful. I think he's serviceable enough that if all the other parts remained the same and the D-line was able to be improved some, the unit wouldn't suffer much overall.

Thats if you think DMC is as good of a player as listed above.

I see this as a positive. I suspect the Patriots believe McCourty is willing to structure a contact extension in a way that they want, which may be a very small cap hit for 2015. It would make sense, since McCourty appears to be a kool-aid drinking lifetime member of the New England Patriots homer club.

I was wondering if that might be the case too. Let McCourty see what's out there if he wants, but have faith that he's likely to stick around, as long as the money is close overall. I think he would be amicable to a team-friendly structure.

I think playing with this Brother you know the twin connection and all is going to prove to be too powerful.
Not to mention the ridiculous endorsement deals being twins on the same team.

Remembering that McCourty wasn't a very good CB once we went to more man to man so Ryan's struggles at CB may not translate to struggles at CB.

Based on the pro days, McCourty has a notable edge in straight line speed but the change of directions between him and Ryan were about the same.

That said, I expect DMac back even if he's allowed to test the market.

McCourty had one bad year at CB. He was a pretty good one otherwise. He was just a lightning rod here. He was far better than Ryan. Not that Ryan couldn't turn into a pretty good safety.

True, and in Tennessee they don't have to spend a lot of time getting ready for playoff games so the'd have more time to work on endorsement deals.

He was good when we played more zone, facing the QB. He was bad when we played more man. All I'm saying is that Ryan has struggled in the same, more or less, defense that DMac struggled in. Ryan may have done better at CB in more zone also.

He was bad that year, but McCourty played a good deal of man this past year without much issue. I wouldn't be so quick to say it's a certainty that Devin's second year woes couldn't have been corrected had he stayed at CB.

As long as he doesn't mind losing all the time. Anytime you don't have a QB, RB or WR it's not a good sign.

That "too powerful" bond didn't keep twin #1 from signing in Tennessee.

For a crap load of money.
At the time k remember everyone thought they overpaid to keep Jason.
Make no mistake INDY, NYJ,TENN, OAK, ATL will be places who would gladly pay Devin ridiculous money.
