Which would mean they need to either sign Revis immediately or get big restructure or key releases. There should be big news coming in the next 24 hours.

Why? I don't think we'll hear anything about Revis until March 9th. I believe they can be over the cap (in fact, they are) with no penalty until certain dates.

I expect to hear about McCourty (and maybe Gost, but I don't see him getting tagged) tomorrow, Revis, Wilfork at the end of the week (next Sunday?), and Amendola and some others post June 1.

All teams must be under the salary cap for their top 51 players by the start of the 2015 league year at 1 PM on March 10. The Pats are likely around $7M over right now. Tagging McCourty would put them around $16M overall. They could get under the cap in a variety of ways, such releasing Revis ($20M savings) or releasing Wilfork and Solder. Hopefully it won't come to that.

McCourty might be the surprise here. He wants to stay, agents hate the tag, and the Pats want him around. I expect that he's getting more attention than Revis for the next couple of days. I think they work out a deal.

A bit of advice to the guys making the contract decisions in Foxborough: Don't even let DMac sniff open market.

I'll be very very very shocked if Dmac isn't a Patriot next year. We want him and he wants us. And he has hinted he'll take less money. He's not the type of guy you worry will become a dog faker after he gets paid. Guy is a pro's pro.

My mistake, I was thinking they had to be under now.

I'm on record in predicting the Revis deal will be announced by Friday (3/6) That will drop the Revis
cap number to around $15MM for this year on a 3 year deal (That's 10MM on the new deal, plus the $5MM carry over from last season.)

That should give the Pats only around $10MM in cap relief, so perhaps they might want to do some things to be able to back load it some more without over doing it. Perhaps making it a 4-5 year contract and lowering the cap rate to 8-10MM for this year. That would allow the Pats to franchise McCourty and still get under the cap by 3/10 so they can delay decisions on Wilfolk, Mayo, and DA for another day, as well as give them until July to get McCourty's deal done.

Needing to get McCourty franchised AND be under the cap will give the Pats another reason to get Revis done. And while its just another bargaining chip for Revis, I still don't believe the mediots who are predicting a $16MM/yr deal. The top of the market has been set by younger players who are just as good at $14MM/yr. It would make no sense to pay THAT big a premium to the market for an older player with fewer physical gifts.

Hopefully, you're right and this all works out, Ken.

One thing to consider is that franchising McCourty will take us to -16 over the cap, so that +10 million dollar savings from a potential Revis extension won't be enough. Other moves definitely have to be made in the next week to get the team under by 3/10.

I agree with this. I don't get how Revis wants 16MM when the other elite/much younger CBs only make 14, but that 16 number does seem to be important to him. I guess he groups himself with the best defensive players in the league, not just CBs.

How does franchising mccourty help us?

I would be shocked to see McCourty leave. Mind you : being a BB fan, I've been shocked before.

Thank goodness (1) they won and (2) BB's making the calls instead of me.

Not sure, but that figure seems to come from an old article comparing 16 million from the Bucs to 12 million from the Jets. If true, don't see how that compares to the current situation.

The former Jets cornerback shared his feelings on Twitter, responding to a comment from one of his followers. The comment:

"Back in the good old days when @Revis24 played for a team that mattered. Wonder if 12MM per and Rex as coach has any merit vs Schaino & 16MM."

Revis offered a response: "Naw 16 is better.

The Jets mattered? lol

Hopefully the patriots don't use the tag. It dosnt represent good value for any of their pending free agents. Get a deal done with Mccourtey and Gostowski.

I haven't seen any credible report that Revis is asking for 16 million per.

Per Rappaport this morning, expect tags for McCourty, Justin Houston, Demarius Thomas, Dez Bryant, NDamukong Suh (26 million), Jason Pierre Paul, and possibly Jeremy Maclin.

I think it would just be a placeholder tag while they get a long term deal done.

@AdamSchefter: Broncos will place their franchise tag of WR Demaryius Thomas before today's 4 ET deadline.

Andddd Julius is gone

@AdamSchefter: Game of tag is underway: Chiefs officially placed their franchise tag on LB Justin Houston, per team source.
