@AlbertBreer: The two-week window for teams to apply the franchise tag opens today. Expect most action closer to the March 2 deadline. A few notes ...

Tomorrow at 4pm is the franchise tag deadline. Any surprises? Will McCourty not get tagged?

I'm guessing a lot of teams are playing a brinksmanship game right now. Expect McCourty, Justin Houston, Dez Bryant and Demaryius to get tagged if nothing is worked out.

I don't think the Pats want to tag McCourty. Cap hit is everything with them this year and they've got a lot of money to spend up front in cash.

9.6 against the cap, when a deal could drop that by half or more?

McCourty might be the surprise here. He wants to stay, agents hate the tag, and the Pats want him around. I expect that he's getting more attention than Revis for the next couple of days. I think they work out a deal.

I agree they don't WANT to tag McCourty. But if no deal is reached, it's tag or let him hit the open market. A tag let's the Pats keep conttol, and everyone working towards a long term deal.

Problem with not tagging McCourty is if he does hit the open market, I could see the Colts offering him a front loaded deal to make him the highest paid safety in the league, something like 4 yrs 41 million. They have a crazy amount of cap space this year.

Letting him even enter FA could be risky.

Sign McCourty now to long term deal.. The market is slim for safeties

Mccourty is the quisiential Patriot he needs to stay.
He is what every team should be looking for in a football player on and off the field.
He needs to stay!

What's interesting is that when these franchise tags get eventually issued, the media storm that will accompany them will far exceed their true impact.

First of all, for players who get insulted by offers, usually in excess of $9MM, that are fully guaranteed the moment they sign them, are frankly insulting to me....the guy who is ultimately footing the bill. That's why I love McCourty even more, for "getting it". He understands that while this might not be exactly what HE wants, it sure doesn't suck. If he plays under that tag, he will be EXTREMELY highly paid for doing what he's supposed to be doing, which is being an elite NFL safety. It also allows him to become a FA the next year and if he stays with his current team, gives him a MINIMUM of a 20% percent raise.

Secondly, unlike most, I have no problems with the NFL's history of not guaranteeing contracts. The fact is that 99% of us are on non-guaranteed contracts. When we produce well he get paid to the market rate. When we fail to produce we are subject to potential pay reductions or dismissal. WTF should we feel bad for athletes who get paid well for doing well, and demand to keep being paid for PAST performance when the level of performance no long equals the pay they are due to get.

BOTTOM LINE: McCourty is likely to get a franchise tag and much will be made of it. However the fact is that both the player and the team want this to happen, and they will continue to work on it between now and March of next year in hopes of making it happen. That's it. That's the whole story. Nothing more to be seen here....move along.

A couple of things to note:

1. The cap it accrues as soon as the franchise tag is applied, whether the player signs it or not. It can be superceded by a su sequential Ling term deal.

2. The deadline for reaching a deal that would apply to this year is sometime in mid July.

That's why I said in "the next couple of days."

I did not know you could tag and have until July to reach a deal - thanks for the info. In that case, McCourty will likely be tagged.

Cowboys are reportedly tagging Dez Bryant - on Sportscenter now.

I bet we tag McCourty, just too important to lose and it's a real weak free agent safety and draft class as well.

I agree with most of the names mentioned earlier as being tagged, I wonder if the Lions are going to franchise Suh.

Can you explain that "non guarantee" part for me please? I thought a contract was a binding agreement.

NFL contracts have salaries per year but they are not guaranteed as you can be cut and not get say year next.

There are also signing bonuses which are guaranteed immediately.

An other types of "earned" bonuses like being on the roster 10 March or making the Pro Bowl.

Slight oversimplification to illustrate the points.

Which would mean they need to either sign Revis immediately or get big restructure or key releases. There should be big news coming in the next 24 hours.

Gostkowski's tag no=$4.59m
