Interested to see what happens with Dennard

If all goes well, in 2016 and 2017, our secondary will cost about $40M a year. I think that this doable, but it will definitely take solid planning. It is worth paying the money for the best secondary in the NFL, especially when you have a top 5 passing offense.

REVIS $16.5M
McCOURTY 9.5
BROWNER 5.0
ARRINGTON 4.0
CHUNG 3.0
BUTLER 1.0
RYAN 1.0
HARMON 1.0

I have only included 8 players. They will get almost all the reps. Dennard, Wilson, and Ebner are the rest of the secondary. I haven't included them, since their defensive reps don't matter much.

I agree with your overall point about needing to allocate a good portion of funds at a very important position, but I think we're starting to get too far ahead of ourselves. Let's first make sure that it's going to be our secondary this year, let alone what it's going to look like 2 and 3 seasons down the road.

While I agree with yourself and others who state the importance of the position, it's an awful lot of money to dedicate, which is why I'm personally a bit apprehensive. I hope you're right of course.

Our 2 best corners are over 30 years old. I expect a CB drafted early next years draft

This thread reminds me of the days of Earthwind Moreland, "two way Troy" and the host of other walk ons and bad picks who destroyed confidence in this defense.. it is a welcome change to see this new direction. Some claim that BB was waiting for this opportunity for a while, while others contend BB though he could "coach up" many NFL players to compete in that position.

Without regard, retaining Revis and McCourty is a nice dream, but the numbers have to work..

McCourty recently said he loves playin in NE, wouldn't mind Franchise Tag.

I guess the worst case scenario would be I’d be franchised and I’d come back to play for another year. For me, that’s no reason to stress. I love it here,” said McCourty, via the Boston Herald. “The franchise tag is player friendly now. It’s a good number. There’s no reason for me to feel stressed. If I hit free agency I hope there are some teams that will want me to play there. Hopefully that goes over well. It’s still exciting.”

I'm not sure what FT $ is for McCourty, I saw 7-9.5mil range.

Arrington shut down Hilton to help the Pats get to the biggest game of the year. Flexibility is important.

Arrington is a good, not great, slot corner but he didnt shut Hilton down by any stretch. Mccourty was not just shading toward Hilton but straight out double teaming him virtually the entire game. Same thing with Cruz in SB46.

Stop spewing lies! Arrington is an elite shutdown slot corner by himself!

I think Dennard can play the slot quite well and at a fraction of the cost. At some point Arrington will get cut due to cost and age.

Why do you have Revis making 3mill a year more than Sherman?
MCcourty at 9.5, he is not Berry or thomas, or even Byrd.

Why are you butthurt by those numbers?

Cutting Arrington saves $1 million and when has Dennard played the slot?

One of the biggest reasons we have outstanding special teams is because of many of our db's.

It's no coincidence that the two best secondaries in football were in the Super Bowl.

The best secondary in football has won the last two (arguably the last three) Super Bowls.

All of those DBs, at all of those numbers. I would say YES. Yes to all.

As I've said before : Arrington is what he is. A VG slot corner with ST ability. He is short, but it is the coaching that was suspect to have him on Matthews that long in the big game.

The 2014 version is the D I have been dreaming about since 2003-04. I love them all. The DL was solid, the LBs were more than that, and the secondary was easily top two in the league.

Changes will need to take place. VW and Mayo are - at the very least - contract restructure candidates. But the $ being proposed in this thread to keep the secondary together is something I not only can live with : I'd be "where can I sign ?" No to the DBs they've drafted for the last decade (Wilhite, Darius Butler, Dowling, Wheatley, Meriweather, Hobbs, .....) - yes to this group.

You are looking at AAV's. I look at likely cap hits.

The hit for Revis is based on Miguel's calks for a $14M a year contract. Miguel's cap hit for 2016 and 2017 was $15.5M. I used a lower 2015 salary and pushed $3M into the future resulting in a $16.5M cap hit.

While I have not as much detail work on the McCourty contract, I suspect that a $5M bonus portion and a 2016 salary of about $4.5M is about right.

Dennard has indeed has been tried in the slot and has never had any success. IF Dennard comes back to what he was, he is pretty good on the outside.

Whether i agree with you on something or not I don't think anyone can accuse you of not doing your homework.

Thank you for your kind words.

Without Miguel's hard work, this kind of analysis would be very, very difficult.
