If all goes well, in 2016 and 2017, our secondary will cost about $40M a year. I think that this doable, but it will definitely take solid planning. It is worth paying the money for the best secondary in the NFL, especially when you have a top 5 passing offense.

REVIS $16.5M
McCOURTY 9.5
BROWNER 5.0
ARRINGTON 4.0
CHUNG 3.0
BUTLER 1.0
RYAN 1.0
HARMON 1.0

I have only included 8 players. They will get almost all the reps. Dennard, Wilson, and Ebner are the rest of the secondary. I haven't included them, since their defensive reps don't matter much.

Agreed, but Arrington is overpaid. They had to bench him in the biggest game of the year.

Coaching staff has to realize Arrington isn't the best candiate to go up against 6'5 guys on the outside.

Browner was actually pleading with Boyer to be put on Matthews after his TD. Which they didn't do until he had that 45 yarder to setup the FG then he was erased.

And what's his excuse for being replaced in the second half by Butler? That had nothing to do with Matthews or Browner.

His play against Matthews is what got him pulled.

Arrington is a tremendous slot corner and has matched well against elite receivers. It's not his fault Seattle had a 6' 5" receiver with zero tape.

Outside of trying to get a seat on the clown car, what's your point of looking so ignorant?

Should also be noted that Arrington was in pretty good position on 2 of the big Matthews' catches, unlike Ryan on the TD, Arrington just doesn't have the size, otherwise he was spot on.

Being short isn't his fault, the staff put him in the bad position, Arrington was about 3 inches away from Matthews not having those yards.

Many folks here have significant disagreements with Belichick's assessment of Arrington. This has been the case for years. Folks were astounded at why Belichick paid so much for a player who they would have cut. Belichick considers Arrington one of the very best nickel backs in the league. Belichick has shown this by paying Arrington so much.

And yes, as with Browner, Arrington is not the best matchup for every wide receiver in the NFL. Belichick's defense is based on game plan. While Belichick does this much more than much coaches, it is his method. Despite their flaws, Arrington and Browner fit in very well indeed.

Personally, I think that Arrington is more likely to be extended than to be cut.

if you go back and watch the game Arrington was in the right spot on every one of those big receptions the issue was that kearse had a monster game, and used his size perfectly.

There is also not a lot you can do when a guy pushes you out of the way with two arms when you are both turning back to the ball.

I'm fine with a significant monetary investment in the secondary. The level of talent demands it.

Its pretty obvious what is happening. The NFL wanted more scoring and more passing. A passing league means teams have to put more capital into stopping this passing.

More ticky-tac PI calls mean you need more talent in this area to play the receiver correctly.

Also in today's NFL every single receiver throws his hands up and looks for a flag on every single incompletion where the CB was near him. It kind of annoying at this point.

Arrington at four million is relatively cheap. He is a great slot corner. Very good tackler. Extremely good in run support. Proficient in our defensive system. Cannot ask a whole lot more from our #3 or #4 corner.

BTW, the OP has to account for 0.5 million to Butler. If he keeps up the SB form, he will clearly move into the #3 or #4 position next year.

I don't see them paying big money to both Revis and McCourty. McCourty wants to be here and is willing to take a discount but he's more replaceable imo. Revis is the opposite kind of.

Irony.

You can put in Butler instead of Ryan. Ryan won't get any reps if everyone is healthy.

EDIT
I have added Butler. We now have a $41M 2016 and 2017 secondary with 5 corners and 3 safeties. He is indeed our #4 corner, first off the bench, and may take almost all of Ryan's reps at corner and dime.

We probably will also have 2-3 special teamers or developmental players at any point, but they really don't matter much in the performance of the secondary.
