Possible reason for delay in Jets tampering ruling?

That would suggest that there's a plan, some competence, and some consideration for fairness. I've not seen the NFL exhibit any of these characteristics under Goodell.

The likely reason for waiting so long is that the issue is not very important. A minimal fine may happen or a minor affect on the 6th or 7th round of the draft (unlikely).

Given that there may be 10 or 15 teams legally tampering with Revis before his deal is effective, the issue of the owner's stupid statement is not a big deal, or at least shouldn't be.
It is the s3cond transgression in one season, after a written warning to cease and desist was delivered. I believe the precedent is loss of first, and one million in fines. This of course is on top of the swap of picks that has been standard operating procedure for this offense in previous years.

While ultimately minor, it is a text book example of tampering. Wells would be set to task, but alas, he is busy. Not to mention the transgression occurred during a taped and televised press conference. Hell, his PR guy even told him not to answer. Then the weasel starts back tracking and personally calls Kraft to apologize.

Swap of no less than 4th rounders, loss of another, plus fine for ignoring the written warning.

conversely if the Jets do not sign Revis can they argue that there was no damage to the Pats & therefore no compensation due?

Whatever the price tag is for Revis, one can argue it would be lower if not for the tampering

And unless they want to make a major monetary fine (knowing there's interested teams has to increase his price by a few million at least) I'd say a draft pick is a better punishment

God damn it! I want a 1st round draft pick swap. If they want to consider his age, fine no lower than a 2nd round draft pick swap. Once in a generation player = high draft pick swap.

I'm only half-joking: the NFL will start penalizing teams once a year, maybe right before each draft.

Otherwise, every time they penalize a team for cheating or a player for violence, the news is once again talking about each issue. And shortly after, another player is involved, and the prior scandals come to light since they're so fresh.

Instead, the annual review process will emphasize that the NFL does diligence. It will also take the spotlight away from NFL scandals on many occasions. And the media is usually time-sensitive, so any TMZ footage of a scandal can come out before the punishment is announced, rather than after, causing backtracking.

With such a change, nobody will be able to compare how much time or resources the NFL used for one case vs another. Currently, a quick decision seems off-the-cuff, and a long one very suspicious.

Or, maybe this is what they did in the PAST, and now they have become very reactive with Ray Rice and such, so we're expecting quick decisions.

Come on, Woody Johnson is just an idiot. They are not going to stop them from being able to go after Revis if he becomes a free agent because their owner has Foot-in-mouth disease. It isn't like they went behind the Pats' back and contacted Revis or his agent. Woody Johnson just doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.
I think it's more complicated than that. Remember, it was Johnson who, according to all reports, told Idiotzik not to try to sign Revis because Woody's feelings were hurt over how things had gone when Revis left the Jests. This kind of statement can easily be construed as a blatant attempt to send the message that things will be different this time.

I think the League knows it's up ****'s creek when it comes to the Patriots this off season.

Deflategate was a fraud and Goodell has realized that he is stuck with the exposure of a corrupt employee who was selling game balls on the internet and an overreaction by a former Jets employee on his staff to a complaint by a sour grapes GM.

On top of that, Johnson's statement was completely inappropriate because, by all reports, he was the one who insisted that the Jets not bring Revis back last year. Whether Johnson intended it as such or not (he's apparently dumb enough not to have understood the implications of what he was saying), his statement can clearly be construed as an attempt to send a message that he would not stand in the way of a Revis return this time.

So, now the League has to figure a way out of the box in which they find themselves without looking as stupid as they really are and without handing the Patriots two victories that will enrage the haters and tick off the mediots whom they hung out to dry in the wake of the leaks during Deflategate.

Oh, and the Patriots won a Super Bowl that was the most-watched event in television history and ended on a play that people will be discussing long after all of us are cheering for the Pats from the great beyond.

Once again, not to be a picky little complainer BUT..."former Jet employee " is about as vague and vanilla in its description that I MUST INSIST that more must be added.

Correspondingly, Mike Kensil worked in the same role for the Jets for 28 years before moving to the league office. He was in New York for Bill Belichick's infamous "one day reign" over the team before departing for New England. Kensil was fired in 2006 by former Belichick assistant Eric Mangini (all of this was noted by CSNNE reporter Tom Curran in a January column). The obvious implication in noting the ties to the Jets was that Kensil hates the Patriots (or, specifically, Belichick).

"I do know that Kensil has been agitating about footballs for months with the Patriots" Curran told WEEI's Dennis & Callahan on Wednesday morning. "He has been asking around about possible football manipulation for months, leading into this. So, it's kind of his white whale." Curran did add context that he's always heard Kensil to be "a good man," for what it's worth."

THIS person is THE scumbag that we've all been tortured by since 2006. THIS is the poisonous fruit of the NFL Offices tree. He MUST be brought to justice outside of the NFL arena in FEDERAL COURT. I will not rest until this smug, arrogant, elitist ex-Jet executive is tried, sentenced and incarcerated in federal prison.

That too.
But, aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the Play?

There is so much tampering going on behind the scenes every year. If Johnson wanted to send this message, he would have just talked to Revis' agent.

I 100% believe this is Woody Johnson showing his only qualifications for owning an NFL franchise was that his grandfather was a business genius. Johnson is just an idiot. To think he is smart enough to send a message to Revis by blatantly tampering in a press conference after he already got in trouble for doing something similar in the past is giving Johnson too much credit for being calculating.

Sorry to reiterate a talking point of mine for the last 8 years....but....it HAS BEEN a green rat operation all along, just like I said. In game sideline tripping, gluttonous displays of piggery tied to official NFL team "Between The Lines" segments, open displays of profanity on multiple occasion, unbelievably disgusting sexual deviancy allowed to be plastered all over the mainstream media that my grand kids can see and be influenced by...no problem...25K fine(if that) and "tut tut...can we give Coach Ryan some privacy?" uttered by the damnable-dell .

A Kensil orchestrated hit job that obviously has continued the past 8 years aimed DIRECTLY at the NEP and ONLY the NEP....million dollar fine, attempted destruction of the NEP's roster by tearing away a #1 pick...all THIS is 100% justified and reasonable, right?...My azz it is. I want VENGEANCE NOW.

All good points, but I wish you'd stop being so conciliatory towards the Rats, they deserve your FULL scorn and contempt.

Joker wants to go full I Spit On Your Grave on the NFL front offices.

I thought I read somewhere where these item are addressed during the league meetings next month. The Detroit and SF charges were addressed both at that event in the past.

And maybe I am naive, but I think it is going to be a switch of 3rds. This is by far the most grievous case of tampering yet. The detroit case was just an assistant coach and just said that if KC cut anyone they would be welcome, with no names mentioned. SF and Chicago was even after chicago contacted SF on a potential trade for Briggs, SF then contacted Briggs agent. Woody was warned by the league last year about Desean Jackson, Laurie didn't press because he did want to move him anyway and did.

And this case involves bitter division rivals with a history of questionable deals.

The Patriots have a history of "questionable" deals? Please elaborate...I know there are "fairminded non-homer" types that have strong distaste for long time Patriot fans but ,unless I'm getting Alzheimer's, I cannot remember the last time the Pats were involved in a "questionable deal" aimed at hurting the Jets.

And you sir are 'giving him too much credit for being' (treating him like he is ) the little boy in the yellow helmet on the small bus. WHY are there rules for 31 teams with historical precedents of punishments for LESSER statements by OTHER OWNERS; and you think he should be given a pass (because he is an idiot). That makes no sense.
Even if inheriting is his only skill /driver license, he still has to obey the traffic laws.... We don't have special lanes on the highways for morons.

I can understand the conspiracy argument that says GoToHell won't do squat or will stop any punishment, but not the argument hat the nfl SHOULD DO NOTHING -some kind of punishment is fully warranted.

It's obviously tampering. But if the Pats actually lose Revis to the Jets, it makes it look a lot worse. I'd want at least a 2nd round pick back if not the Jets 1st if that happened. If Revis stays a Pat, I'd settle for the Jets' 4th rounder. We seem to do ok with those. ;)

In a sense I agree, BUT, and it's a big BUT, just because Johnson wasn't smart enough to realize the implications of what he said, doesn't make the tampering less valid. But the key factor in what kind of punishment the Jets should get, is the fact that Johnson had already gotten a written warning about this with the calendar year.

If the league doesn't act vigorously, then they might as well make tampering legal all year round, instead of just a couple of days. The NFLPA wouldn't stand in the way..

Here's the one thing about Mike Kensi's actions I want explained in full. I want to know, WHY he reportedly re-inflated the supposed under inflated balls at half time, thus tainting the only evidence that would have conclusively cleared the Pats from any possible wrong doing.

Everything after that is total hearsay, from Mort's damning report, to Rappaport's report that absolves the Pats. Mike Kensil had the means, motive and opportunity to damage a team he hates....and I want HIM to he investigated. And if he isn't, I want to know WHY

Goody is waiting so he can bury the stories that he wants buried.
