I am always confused by this recurring comment. Why should we reject a player out of hand because we have other needs. Should we not sign a DE because we need an OG?
Because resources are not unlimited. Hence, prioritizing.

Sign the beast. What he did was bad, but not that bad...pretty standard southern black parenting, perhaps taken a little far. Doesn't justify it, but it sort of explains it.

The Viking own the rights to him, so we'd have to trade quite a bit of draft capital to get him, and who could we then not afford to sign because of all the money going to AP?

steven jackson was a great back, sucks that he wasted his career with the rams. joined ATL but they were in decline.

Funny coming from you.

Not at all. Since I stated early on that I expected I'd lead the site in dislikes, it should be clear that I don't really care about valid use of the button. I almost never use it, and you can feel free to ask a mod to verify that.

When I do use it, it's almost always in response to someone who's disliked an uncontroversial post without bothering to back up their position, and I pick a nit in return, in the hopes that said poster has some light dawn on them. I originally tried calling people out on it, in the hopes of getting people to quit abusing it, but that didn't work and people accused me of whining, so I changed my approach.

But, if you have a problem on the subject that is specific to me, feel free to pm me about it. Or, you could just take a look at whatever dislike has you in a tiff, and then relate it back to some dislike that you probably gave to me without any real reason.

WR is a need and if we can get him for cheap we should pull the trigger. Amendola/Dobson/Tyms Gave us nothing this season.

Can't count on them
That's a bummer that you missed the Super Bowl. It's Ok though - it gets played on NFL Network every once in a while. Ask a friend if they can give you a copy, and have them give you one for each of the other two playoff games too. You'll be surprised when you see what that Amendola kid did. ;)

EDIT: I didn't mean to be a jerk - just bugs me when people downplay the significance of what Amendola did in the postseason and down the stretch when they called on him to do more.

@caplannfl: As @JasonLaCanfora said, the #Raiders are going to release S Tyvon Branch.

@caplannfl: Branch is only 28. Just a matter of staying healthy. Very solid player when in the lineup.

WR is absolutely a need.
I think one big key this camp and preseason is going to be Dobson. The Patriots drafted him because he's exactly what they needed, a big, tall kid with great hands that can make plays on the perimeter. Instead his development was slowed by injuries and obviously there must have been some frustration that lead to whatever was going on internally that caused the issues of which we heard conflicting reports of last season.

Watching the highlights of this kid at Marshall man...it's just maddening. You wait all this time for them to draft "that guy" and he comes in and shows some promise with a decent first season but an injury sets him back and essentially ruins his second. If he could be the guy they thought they drafted, this is a pretty solid group with Edelman, LaFell, Amendola, and Dobson complimented by Gronkowski. Wish this kid could get it together, because as I said, who he was IS exactly what they need. Sucks to think one of your solutions is already on your roster and he just isn't playing to his potential. Hopefully we see signs of a turnaround this preseason.

Branch is a guy that I've wanted for the Patriots in the past.

With the Chung resigning, there's no chance of that happening.

It's funny though...if they re-sign McCourty, safety isn't really as big of a position of need as it's been in the past. With Duron Harmon, McCourty, Chung, they're pretty well stacked. Timing of Branch being available stinks, I think he'd be a tough fit right now here.

Yeah, it's too bad that he's had the foot issues. They can really stunt a player's growth (Demaryius Thomas had the same sort of problem in his first two seasons). He's shown flashes, but I just don't think you can count on him at this point, until he proves otherwise. I'd consider him essentially as the equivalent of a mid/low round flier guy, at this point, for roster purposes.

I know, it's irritating. He's got the physical tools and the potential. Would love to see this finally be his year, but like you said, he's going to have to show that he's ready to finally turn the corner.

I'm still not in the Chung camp, so I'd still be interested in him (but the cap probably makes it a non-starter). I'd rather have a safety I actually like on the field than have one where I'm thinking "Well, because Revis and McCourty are so good, we can get away with Chung as long as we don't let him get exposed, because we can basically just use him as a floating 4-3 LB".

Chung played really damn well, but if Branch is health, he would be a definite upgrade.

It's probably null and void though considering we locked PC up already

On the Dobson side, I definitely was ecstatic when they drafted him. Many on the board wanted him in the draft and they took him. He reminds me of a guy who does just about everything good, and has a knack for making a circus catch. Hopefully, the foot injuries haven't hindered his speed. But, for this offense, Edelman/Amendola are the perfect WRs to work the middle and short flats, while LaFell/Dobson work down the field and intermediate routes.

If Vereen walks, I would love Harvin on a 1 year prove it. Doubt Bush would take a prove it deal, but he would be great mixed with Blount or Ridley

Peterson may be available soon in free agency or by trade, presumably after the appeal of the current case.

Given that Peterson would greatly improve our situation at RB, how would you feel if the patriots signed or traded for Peterson?

For you, are non-football issues relevant to how you might accept this deal?
My pipe dream! AP before the child abuse fiasco was the best RB in the league by a mile!

With the Chung resigning, there's no chance of that happening.

I agree. Also, to make sure I'm not misunderstood on this, I don't have safety anywhere near the top of my version of the Patriots 'needs' list. As long as McCourty and Revis are on the field, this team can get away with a non-starting caliber safety against most teams.

I do find it more than a little interesting, though, that the Patriots basically had their same linebackers staying on the field in both base and nickel/dime type situations, and the specialization and substitution was at safety instead. It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.
