2015 NFL Veteran Cuts Thread

Yes, the team needs help at WR. Spending to sign a WR in no way precludes them from bringing back Revis, McCourty, Vereen, or Gostkowski... the Patriots have plenty of cap space, and Solder isn't a free agent, so I'm not sure what the left tackle thing is about.

Yes signing a FA WR such as maybe Nate Washington, Cecil Shorts, Kenny Britt, or Eddie Royal probably wouldn't preclude them from bringing back key guys. But if Brandon Marshall hits the market and Dez Bryant stays with Dallas he is arguably the #1 WR out there and will easily get a $8-$9m AAV deal.

#1 CB- Looking at a $25m cap hit or a release if an extension is not done
LG- a FA
FS- a FA
3rd down/receiving back- a FA
#1 DT going to be an $8.6m cap hit at 33 years old. So either time to cut him and use that money on someone younger at the position or overpay him for a year, because let's be honest VW play wise isn't worth $8.6m

But assuming Brandon Marshall is looking for a market deal, the Pats should definitely bring him in. /sarcasm.

Which 8 games this year was he good in and which 4 were superb

I would say in our two biggest games of the year (Ravens in playoffs and Seahawks in Superbowl) he really came up big. I think that goes a long way. I hope he is back!!!!

I like this thread and congratulate DI on starting it. However, it seems that we have moved to our list of needs, which is pretty useless since each of us has a different starting point.

For example, some start with Revis, McCourty and Amendola on the team. After all, Revis and Amendola are on the team, and McCourty can be franchised. Others understand that the team is not paying Revis $20M, so he is in essence a player who we must sign in order to keep. Wilfork may considered part of the team or not. Since almost no one thinks that he is being paid $8.5M, he too could be considered not part of the team unless he signs a new contract. The same goes for Amendola.

So, I guess my list of needs is below, and will be very different in two weeks.

CB - could be a new contract for Revis
S - could be McCourty
OG - could be Connolly and 2-3 draftees
DT - could be Wilfork (or a free agent or Branch) and a draftee
WR - could be Amendola
RB2 - could be Vereen
RB1 - many are fine with Blount, Ridley could fill this need
K - could be Gostkowski
LB - could be Ayers and/or Casillas
LS - could be Aiken (I couldn't resist adding this "starter")

Almost every one of these "needs" could disappear before free agency starts.

EXAMPLE

SOURCES
Sign Revis to a 5 year deal $15M (2015 cap savings)
Restructure Wilfork 3M
Restructure Mayo (no loss in pay) 4M
Restructure or cut Amendola 2M
Total $24M

COSTS
Overage $7M
McCourty 6M (first year net cap cost, could be less)
Gostkowski 4M (franchise cost)
Vereen 3M (net cost to add to the 51)
Connolly 2M
Casillas 1M
Ridley 1M
total $24M

LATER COSTS
There are other restructures that can be used for later costs. These include Browner, Gostkowski, Arrington and Brady.

NOTE
Obviously ALL the restructures will not happen. Obviously, all the players will not be signed. Ayers or Branch might be chosen instead of my choices. Savings or costs could be more.

BOTTOM LINE
The point is that talking about needs now is unreasonable unless we have a set of assumptions with regard to who is already here.

BTW, if we did all of the above, what would our list of needs be?
Mine might be OG, OG, DT, TE, LB

AN ASIDE
For those who didn't see my Revis contract proposal elsewhere. It is a 5/$70M ($35-40M guaranteed), with a $20M bonus, and a $1M first year salary, for a 2015 cap hit of $5M (plus $5M for the 2014 contract).

I looked for you

I'm not sure if you know what superb is based on his stats.

There were only 3 games last season he had 5 or more catches.

He had more games with 0 catches
I am not going to argue with you. you dont like the guy, so no matter what I will say it wont be good enough.

Hate on...

lol because you don't have a leg to stand on in this argument.

I agree, and I hope he's back on a cheap deal. I hope his good games at the end of the season means he's progressed in the system.

But 2 good games out of 19 played isnt that exciting

I'd put him closer to the $6-7m range, a little higher than what Reggie Wayne got in his last contract. If Dez and Thomas are gone, Cobb is still the #1 WR on the market, though you're right that they would probably be better off with a "bargain" like Cecil Shorts.

No because your original comment of he is was good in 2 games was ridiculous. You made the first claim and it was stupid.

Name the 2 games.

Ravens and Seahawks

He was also good against the jets

So 3 whole decent games.

Whoa

The jests would easily give him $8-$9m per (They are looking at $10.5m for Harvin in 2015) and he would be able to do Inside the NFL easily.

you're like talking to a wall
Its not my fault you choose to be stubborn.

We don't have to seek out a kicker or a revis. We just have to sign them.
Until we do, they are huge needs.

This discussion is based on finding players. Not resigning ones on the roster. If gost and revis get away that changes
Right now they are 'away'. They would be a fine solution to those needs. However, I'm not sure where you would get the money to find other players if you resign those 5.

The discussion was about needs AT THE MOMENT, not whatever you think it was.

Amendola was good for like 2 games. He's not reliable.
He is more reliable than Wilson, Kline, White, or no one at K, and a backup caliber starting CB.

Dobson, tyms and Boyce? Oh boy look out nfl. I'm putting you on notice for the offensive onslaught headed your way
Right, because thats what I meant when I listed the starters and depth at a position to compare to a position we don't currently have a starter under contract.
By the way, the NFL should look out, because we won a SB (by passing heavily against the best D in the NFL) with that group of WRs, who are all still under contract.

Oh come on dude. I know you want to win your argument here but just "good" against the Jets? Really? That is laughable. He won us the game singlehandidly. Go watch the game. His punt returns alone were awesome. The go ahead TD catch? The on side kick recovery. WON US THE GAME.

Supurb in that game. I thought the same against Baltimore, and you could say ultra clutch in the SB .

He was being used as a return man in several other games. Supurb in the other Jets game. 1 Key TD and 4 returns for 105 yards.

He was just good in the MIA game with ST play. You could argue he was just good as a ST player in a couple of others

Some other games he did not show or was not used. But again, as explained he was not healthy. When healthy he was a different player completely.

So Good in Just 2 games is nonsense.

He's a physical possession outside receiver something we were lacking. He's a veteran that if cut might take less money to go for a title and play the best QB of all time. His style of play fits our offense

Ya go spend money on a #4 and #5 CB that could be used on more pressing needs.

Humor me on who you have in mind and what type of money they would be coming to the Pats for.

If I wanted to humor you I'd probably have to throw a pie in someone's face or get a laser pointer for you to chase.

That being said, I should have been clearer that through FA those adequate replacements don't exist. Hence this would be addressed through the draft.

Also, if adequate replacements could be found slightly cheaper...money could then be allocated to other areas.

Teams who place a priority on accumulating compensatory draft picks will have interest in Bush, who wouldn't subtract from their FA losses.
he was cut, so I don't think compensatory draft picks would come into play, would it?

He is a bad teammate a me, me, me guy, lacks stability and our OC gave him away in his prime for nothing.
If this was Madden, sign him up, but since he would be part of a team, not thanks.
Brandon Marshall has never been on a team that made the playoffs. That is not a coincidence.

Vereen has had his share as well.
Yes but Vereen is in hos prime with little wear and tear, and Bush is on the down side of the hill.
