Does it make sense to extend Vereen now?

im on the fence with vereen....although letting woodhead get away for relatively little money was disappointing

This + Letting Blount go for little money.

I just don't think it's good business sense to sign either of the rbs now when both are fa's at season end. Do you really want to bet on either long term right now, not knowing who will be more important to the team by seasons end?

They could re-sign Ridley now, only for vereen to turn in to Reggie bush. Or they could get vereen now and watch Ridley turn in to marshawn lynch. Or both might go in the tank and get overtaken by rookies.

There simply isn't enough benefit right now in signing either early, outside of gambling strategies.

I think the Patriots would love to lock up Vereen, and I would love to see it.
There is virtually no risk at the level of contract he would get at this point.

Contrary to what we read here a lot, the job of the team is not to make sure everyone is paid fairly, but to maximize the amount of contracts that level of production outweighs cost.
At Vereens current reasonable asking price he would have an excellent chance of outperforming the contract, and little chance of underperforming it by much as we know the worst case scenario is that he adds a facet to the offense.

No wait and see how the season plays out. Injuries are a problem with Vereen.Nothing would be worse then to extend him, and then have him go down with a injury onto IR.
Why would the decision to extend him beyond 2014 be a bad one if he is injured in 2014?
He is already under contract for 2014.

I'm one of the bigger Vereen fans/optimists on this forum, I think, but I wouldn't even think about extending him unless it was for way below his healthy market value. He needs to stay healthy for a season before you can give him a long-term extension, and in the likely event that he misses games this year, he should be pretty cheap in the offseason.

If he's willing to sign for very little long-term, then sure, but that wouldn't make a lot of sense for him. He might as well play out this season, and make a lot more money if he can stay healthy.

Is the $7,157,250 what we have to date with Easley still unsigned?

Yes. The Patriots should lose about 833K in cap space when they do sign Easley.

Just thought I would bump this thread from last offseason. I had proposed an extension for Vereen that would have been relatively cheap but at that time something he likely would have taken (his production was quite low.).

My question is now where do you see his value?
