And the Ravens did weep for they would receive no more rings...

Even though this change would improve the game for players and fans, it would be met w/ harsh criticism and be dubbed the Brady Rule since everyone knows deep balls are not our strength. #makingfootballbettergate.

So basically any pass to Gronk is a 15 yd play!
Oh, wait! Re-watched the playoffs and LBs had him wrapped up before the ball play after play.
My point exactly. We don't get the calls for us, only against us, so let's limit it to 15 yds.

Yeah, if a team is facing a 3rd and 20, a 15 yard penalty still keeps the drive alive. So defenders cannot just willy nilly take PI calls down the field on third downs because they may not hurt as bad, but they still hurt pretty bad.

I'm even guessing it would be an automatic first down, like holding or illegal contact, so even on long down and distance a DB shouldn't be thinking PI-first.

I'm always down for a dogpile on the Ravens.

It definitely benefits a precision passing team like the Pats. It works the other way too. If you get a PI call on a 6 yard pass, it is a 15 yard penalty rather than a spot foul.
I don't think so. I think its a spot foul if its less than 15 yards.

We won't know until they make the rule. From both PFT's article and NFL.com where they got the story all it says it they are talking about changing it from a spot foul to a 15 yard penalty. I think that implies whether it is an one yard play or a 99 yard one.

Jeff Fischer is part of the competition committee and his team got screwed big time by a bogus PI call and cost them the Chargers game.

They are using short-hand for the college structure, which is a spot foul maxing out at 15 yards.

It would make sense, but until we see the proposal and what passes (assuming it does pass) we won't know. The league likes to oversimplify penalties and make everything the same. Just like when they got rid of the 5 yard incidental contact helmet rule and made everything 15 yards.

Make the rule with options for the ref, rather than 1 size fits all. If the contact occurs < 15 yards downfield, it's a spot foul. If longer than 15 yards, then an option for either a 15 yarder or spot foul depending on how egregious it is. A tackle downfield should be spot, jostling or hand contact should be 15.

Also align it with defensive holding calls and improve that rule as well. Too often 5 yards is not enough, it happens downfield but they rule the ball hadn't quite left the QB's hand yet. But on the other hand the automatic 1st down part is not often fair on something that occurs near the los. Too many ticky-tack holding calls.

I have one problem with this........late in a game, DB's will intentionally tackle on long pass......

I'm not sure I will like this
