Excellent Garoppolo article

There are a few people that I question will still be Patriots fans after Tom hangs 'em up. I love the guy. He's the most competitive player I've ever seen in the NFL and without a doubt, my favorite athlete in history but a few of you act like you'd take a bullet for him. No one here is seriously comparing Jimmy to him. Garoppolo seems like the player ever coach would dream for work ethic wise and if Belichick decides that it would be better for the Patriots future to keep Garoppolo, then so be it. I don't feel the need to obsess over the QB situation until at least 2017 OR if I see a sudden decline in Tom's ability but I understand off-season boredom.

You're off on a tangent of unfounded conjecture. Nobody, here especially me, is comparing Garoppolo to Brady in terms of ability. The article addresses Jimmy's preparation, work/off-field habits, dedication, personality and leadership potential. In those respects he is "Brady-like." That's not being disrespectful to or unappreciative of Brady in any way; in fact, it's a compliment. I never heard or read of Mallett being described that way.
Says a QB from the 80s with a career rating of 42.7. Come on man, it is hype. Last year most of this board had the #33 pick coming to us from Houston for Mallett, this year it is Garoppolo as Steve Young. Everyone needs to just settle down. I hope it works out like people want to suggest but to post about it as likely is just silly.

I was a fan of the Patriots before Brady and I will be after, and I would not take a bullet for him. I just believe the best thing for this franchise and its future is to have its greatest player finish his career as a member of the team. Unless Garoppolo is going to become a bigger part of the legacy of this team than Brady I can't see any reason to tarnish that for a relative unknown.

There is more to football than wins and loses anyone who has ever played the game knows that. There is something to be said for doing right by your players and maintaining a positive legacy.

"There is more to football than wins and loses anyone who has ever played the game knows that."

With every new post, you more clearly define what you are about. There's nothing wrong with that, but it clarifies what school of thought you belong to.

Look, Brady6, you very clearly are stating that keeping Brady until he retires, even if it means 1-2 years of hurting the team, is paramount.

It is what it is.

I'm sure there will be a group of people who agree with you on that.

Others here (and I believe it is the vast majority of Patriots fans) want the team to win, first and foremost.

This is not a Broadway show.

Let's just agree to disagree. End of story!

I so want the Patriots to win a 5th Super Bowl with Belichick & Brady, so much that I can't help but wonder if someone will make an offer for Jimmy G at some point.

I have given this lot of thought & I think Belichick would ask for a 2nd or 3rd round pick in the current year
& a first round pick in the following year.

This year the QB pickings are slim &
After Mariota & Winston there is not much. I believe Jimmy G would be in the top 3 of Quarterbacks if he was in this years draft and some people may pick him ahead of Winston or Mariota who both will probably go in top 5 of the draft.

Belichick loves the pick in the future when he thinks a team may struggle in the current year.

I am not saying trade Jimmy G, but
I bet they at least listen & hope some team will overpay.

Unless someone bites at a high offer, you keep Jimmy G.

Agree w/Joe on holding out for a high offer this off-season, and don't think we want to rid ourselves of him so much we take what we invested draft-wise (i.e., a 2nd), and don't try to get more -- after he's learned whatever he's learned on-site. Truthfully, he's cheap to keep until the moment comes - read keep and groom. Doesn't seem like we take a QB in the 2nd just because Tom might need pushing in the 4th game.

tom bradys just don't grow on trees. i'll believe it when i see it. i don't care about stats. i don't care about probowls. all i care is the SB. can he win the SB? that's the big if.

You've got to remember that this team is good enough that it possibly could still do damage in the playoffs if Brady gets hurt, which is reason to have decent insurance at QB. If Garoppolo is as good as the coaches seem to think he is, keeping him for that reason (and as Brady's eventual successor) precludes any thought of a trade.

Short of complete and utter stupidity ("Hi, Bill. This is Tampa Bay. Would you send us Jimmy Garoppolo for our next three first rounders?"), I agree.

What Brady did in the SB, short drop backs with quick releases, is exactly what Garoppolo was known for in college too. He's perfect for this offense.

I think Brady's legacy with this franchise is unique. There really isn't a comparison except for maybe Montana. But everybody hated the way that went down when it happened. As a fan of the NFL I don't think Kraft is probably looking to do the same thing. Even if it did sort of work out. Kraft, IMO is a little more sentimental, Brady isn't going to be treated like other guys, nor should he.

Some of it will be on Brady though, if they say "you aren't the starter anymore" and he says I'm going elsewhere, then there's nothing we can do. I don't know about Garoppolo, looks better than a lot of backups. Probably the guy I thought did the best as a back-up was Hoyer before Garroppolo.

I may take the trade Cup O Joe wants to make, but I don't know who else would make that trade. Beyond that, I don't know how high they are or aren't about him in Foxborough. None of us do. Hell it might change practice to practice.

I can see him as our Aaron Rodgers though. I didn't quite feel that with some of the previous guys - who are or have been NFL starters in their own right since their time with the Pats.

Plus, he can scramble.

I would take a bullet for Tom. But I would still root for the team after he's gone. I've got my prerequisite Brady jersey, but I have a Vrabel one too. You can have it both ways :)

So, If the Rams offered us a 2nd round pick in 2015 and a 1st in 2016, we should say no because Brady who has played every game since 2009 may get hurt?

Just out of curiosity, do you also want us to keep Wilfork at 8.5 million?

Early this season, people were talking about Peyton Manning as if he could easily go another three to five years. Does anyone really think that now?

Heck, you could argue that Brandon Weeden's awfulness is the reason the Cowboys didn't have HFA, despite going 12–4 (same as Seattle and Green Bay).

Yes, because Brady will be 38 next season and is not immortal despite exceptional durability to date. Also because Garoppolo appears to be his heir apparent.

I doubt the Patriots are seriously entertaining that idea. How are you linking Vince with Brady?
