I recorded his session earlier today and haven't watched yet, but I'll be honest, I saw every game he played in this year including one live (my daughter goes to FSU), and I'm blown away that he's going to be a number one overall pick. I would have thought of him as more of a second or third round pick but I guess looking at this year's draft class, there aren't really a lot of guys who are amazing by any means so that's probably why he'll be going higher given the talent. He's slow reading defenses and going through his progressions (I think he's going to struggle with the speed at the next level), and Jimbo Fisher is the reason why he had a lot of the success he did in terms of making adjustments that forced him get the ball out quicker in the second half of a lot of those wins. He also made some dumb throws, but the biggest thing that was noticeable was the fact that there were so many times he got the ball out late and his guys got lit up because the defenders saw where he was going with the football.
Another big issue that he sort of acknowledged was the fact he was surrounded with some terrific talent on offense, which bailed him out with some pretty terrific plays on quite a few occasions. A lot of those guys are in the draft, and having seen a lot of them (TE Nick O'Leary is a good player, as is WR Rashad Greene) I don't see Tampa surrounding him with guys like that, and I don't feel he'll be good enough to do it on his own. Not to mention the fact that FSU's defense was terrific down the stretch, although they fell apart against Oregon.
But what gets lost is the fact that Fisher was literally in his ear throughout the entire game each week, postgame, holding his hand and doing everything in his power to help make him successful and last night was a good example of Winston without him. One key phrase I heard Fisher say repeatedly was "stay humble" - which he certainly struggled with last night. Fisher defended him to the hilt throughout every scandal and issue the kid ever faced, but at the NFL level he's going to be accountable and isn't going to get the same treatment from the coaching staff. They're going to expect him to do it on his own and be able to keep his head on straight without someone always being on him. Not going to lie, I'm not rooting for him to fail, but I have serious doubts about this kid. He may have a high football IQ, but it's going to be interesting to see how he handles himself with millions of dollars and no one constantly watching over him. That's generally a recipe for disaster for a kid that already has a history of making bad decisions, although hopefully for his sake he becomes someone else once he reaches the next level.
