OT: It's official, Jameis Winston doesn't have the intelligence for the NFL

I dont like Winston but come on, everyone always says that they want their players to be confident. Would you prefer him to say that he hopes his team can go 6-10?
You know, believe it or not, there is a continent sized space between those two things.

It's aspiration. It's only something bad in the minds of people searching for something bad.

"I'm the best decision this organization's ever made"
- Tom Brady, as a rookie
Yeah I have to kind of agree with Deus here. I am no fan of Winston or his actions as he has obviously made some dumb decisions. I also fully admit it might not have been the most bland answer in the world, but I think you have to consider the question. He was asked about a comparison between himself and Manziel and dismissed it and then a comparison to Mariota... and really the last thing he wants to do is get into a situation constantly comparing himself to other rookies or yet to be proven players like Manziel because it serves no purpose. The reporters insisted on trying to get him to compare himself to other players, so his plan is to be whoever is a Super Bowl contender. He could've said Rodgers rather than Manning, but honestly so what....that's not that big a deal.

I think it's also important to consider the two previous sentences that were snipped out for some reason. It's easy for us to forget when we have a veteran QB who the vast majority of the time "says the right thing", but those two first bits are pretty much exactly what we would want to hear from an incoming rookie QB who would be looking at competing for a starting job straight out of the gate. The only real nit-picking I could do with the below quote is with a couple words: "I plan on" could have been "My goal is" or "I plan on competing for" but again, given the first two sentences I bolded below, that's not that big a deal.

""My job is to win games and, hopefully, win Super Bowls," Winston said. "This is not a competition between me and Mariota. One thing about me, I plan on winning the Super Bowl next year so it's going to be Jameis versus Peyton Manning and Jameis versus Tom Brady...After all this combine stuff, you're not going to hear no more about Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. I want my name to stay relevant for the next 15-20 years of my career."

This isn't rocket science. There are a thousand ways to answer those questions while sounding confident in your abilities without announcing that you're going to win the SB next year and that you aren't competing with your peers, you're competing with two HoFers.

But then, this is a guy who thought it was a good idea to jump up on a table in the middle of the school cafeteria and start screaming 'F*ck her right in the ****y!' and when told he was out of a game, got dressed anyway, came out on the field and argued with his head coach about it.

At least he is confident. I doubt most guys come in thinking "I'm going to be a mediocre QB and never go to the gig."
The world is full of overconfident dumb asses.

I never said it was "rocket science" nor implied it.

And to be honest, I think the other actions you talk about are what shows me he might not have the common sense to last in the league as a premier player without some big changes in his behavior. My point was that I just don't think a sentence or two taken out of this quote was the nail in the coffin so to speak that makes it official. If someone like Mariota said it in the exact same way, I don't think it's really a story which I think (and he can correct me if I'm wrong) is what Deus might have been somewhat implying. This looks bad mostly because of the arrogance and stupidity Jameis has shown in the past.

But it's just an opinion on the quote itself, mostly. (Opinion being the key word) I don't fault anyone for thinking as you or others do about him...the wording just doesn't jump out at me that much. EDIT: To be completely honest, when I first read the original post I thought this was a tongue in cheek thread questioning his intelligence solely for suggesting Peyton will be competing for a SB next year.

Jameis is either gonna really work out or really flame out, that's typically what public overconfidence like that ends up being.

Jimmy Garoppolo will have a better NFL career than Jameis Winston. You read it here first.

obviously, all im saying is that him being super confident and self assured isnt that big of a deal. I think that Winston is a scumbag and I will be glad every time he loses, but I can't get annoyed at a guy who says he wants to win the super bowl

OMG OMG, not swear words! What a disgusting human!
thats very selective quoting right there. He did yell "**** her right in the ****y" in the middle of a cafeteria after his very public rape "investigation"

1. ok, thats a bit excessive
also...
2. lol

Since we're sharing personal opinions, mine is that Winston is taking advantage of a piss poor draft class at QB this year, which allows him to be the top choice, despite his questionable off the field issues.

As far as his bold statements---I don't see anything wrong with it myself, other than continuing to put a target on his back. Only time will tell whether he's great, sucks, or falls somewhere in the middle. We all have our hunches, but no one really has any idea whatsoever.

I'm not really a fan myself, but that's just me.

BUSTO.

Confidence is fine, but people should know better than to set themselves up for ridicule. Shows a real lack of maturity. The best players know just how tough it's going to be.

Self confident +
It's a necessity, especially when facing adversity as all rook QBs will. Remember how in The Brady 6 Gino Carmargi (sp?) psychologically imploded on facing NFL adversity.

Dissembling for minutes on end showing total little but self-absorption not so good. Unless he's the next Peyton Manning which I seriously doubt, that Johnny Football schtick is gonna grate on his veteran team mates quickly. Remember top draft picks don't go to well positioned for the playoffs franchises.

Still, GMs of top draft teams needing a QB will be hard put passing on that rara avis that can chuck the pill.

I watched FSU a few times this year. Winston's a nice player, but the games I saw them win (come-from-behind) were team efforts - a defensive pick, a receiver with huge YAC, etc.

Several current college QBs could have taken that team just as far. Winston never seemed to me the dominant player, like Luck, RGIII, Can Newton. He didn't put the team on his back - they were just very talented in a lot of places.

Certainly Winston has a lot of physical gifts, but the NFL is going to require a level of discipline and hard work that I'm not sure Mr. Me has in him.

I guess if we're only to consider one snippet of what he said, he wouldn't sound too much like a presumptuous, arrogant ass.

I'll be PR guy.

"I don't compare myself to anyone, I'm just trying to make a team and help them any way i can."

Simple.

You aren't worthy of carrying the jock of the two players mentioned, so just drop that and the team goal of a Super Bowl on the unknown, probably crappy team that picks you.

If i have the number one pick this year and somebody wants this guy, I'm trading out, simple as that. Show me the Super Bowl wining quarterback with great physical talent but no brains, discipline or character. I don't remember one.

Stupid is as stupid does - Forest Gump.

I'm sure there were some Rhodes scholar candidates among NFL quarterbacks, but the best had discipline, character and focus, qualities this guy lacks, so don't worry about stereotypes that are irrelevant, it isn't a spelling bee.
