2/18/2015: Schefter Blows Up ESPN's Earlier Story

Serious question for any current or former lawyers out there (I know what snark can be piled on this -- I'd be one of the people doing it :) ) but I honestly would like to know what Wells is at least theoretically governed by:

When an organization hires a lawyer to do an internal investigation, makes it public that it has hired said lawyer, and says the lawyer's report of the investigation will be made public, what do the rules of legal ethics say about how the lawyer is supposed to balance doing an honest job ("honest" in the sense of not blowing off stuff that makes the organization look bad) with advancing the interests of his client?

Yet another juicy tidbit....

Scott Miller, the fired guy, was apparently the guy who RAN the charity auctions for the NFL, according to a report on WEEI (based upon Miller's Linkedin profile).

It just keeps getting more and more delicious.

@PhilAPerry @tomecurran Very interesting that Dean Blandino insisted at Super Bowl that he wasn't aware of any complaints from Colts

Very!

Who did Grigson alert at the NFL office. Was that not asked of him? Did he leave a message on the main line during after work hours?

So Blandino says he wasn't aware of this and the officials did not record the PSI levels before the game. This would be consistent with typical practices and with Blandino's statement.

But then supposedly Mike Kensil is the one who measured the balls at halftime.

Hmmmm.

Should be getting that Wells report any week now...

I think the league is going to push Wells to conclude the investigation sooner rather than later at this point. The longer the investigation has taken, the more hits the league has taken. The league wanted to drag out this investigation to make it appear that they took the investigation seriously. Now all it has done is make the league look really bad.

#Deflectgate. League happy to throw Pats under the bus with this crap sure to come out eventually.

All depends how much they pay him. Is it enough that he can ignore the fact that his peers know he sold out? I think that's the only rule that governs these people. And, I am sure that the owners know what his price is and will pay it.

Delicious with a cherry on the top if the trail visibly and indisputably leads to Goodell's doorstep.

He probably told that same woman holding the Ray Rice video somewhere in the NFL offices.

I don't care if it doesn't lead all the way to him. Remember that Goodell suspended a head coach for a year because of actions happening underneath him without his knowledge.

I'm absolutely fine with Goodell getting axed because of things happening underneath him without his knowledge. It'd be poetic justice.

New England Patriot owner, head coach, QB, all the players , the entire organization and their very loyal fan base deserve a long overdue apology and complete vindication over deflate gate ( spygates as well - but a rule was broken, so it won't happen, in spite of the trivialness of that action).

I doubt it will happen though.......in spite of the mounting evidence of a totally messed up sting operation combined with all the screw ups along the way and with a sidebar issue of NFL employee stealing from charity ( I happen to buy memorabilia from NFL Auctions and am feeling disgusted right now, I would guess about one penny of every dollar actually goes to help someone in need).

We all seek vindication, yet, with all that is going on, how in the hell is that going to happen?

Dues, I am replying to you because you certainly have a way with words and can possibly call on some of the brains in this group to come up with a way we can express our feelings and expected actions from the NFL.

There has to be a way, we as a group, can make ourselves known that as lifelong true fanatics, it ****ing hurts to be treated the way we have been since the day after the AFC Championship game.

The NFL/Colts in this thing remind me of Horrible Bosses 2. Can't get anything right. I'm sure their fantasy about how it would turn out looked a lot better...

Regardless of the outcome of this nonsense witch hunt which proves beyond all measure that NFL management would give the Keystone Kops a run for their money, the next time I see Roger Goodell, this is what I want him to be saying:

I hope wells does investigate the source of the complaint and how it originated and not just the pats and employees and officials.

I thought Troy Vincent said the NFL received a call during the game?

I keep thinking about the source for Schefter and Curran. Is it Belichick? Who else would know all this information? Belichick seems to me like a firm believer in keep your friends close and your enemies closer. He knows Kensil. He knows how messed up that Colts organization is. He knows Harbaugh has thrown him under the bus even when Belichick helped him get that Ravens job. He hates Goodell. He knows how disorganized the NFL offices are. He still holds a grudge for how they came after him from Spygate. If so, Belichick shows no mercy. To quote Michael Irvin:

"He's a gangsta of gangstas!"

I'm not sure if it is directly Belichick making these comments. But perhaps it is getting diverted from Belichick through someone, like his son Steven?

Ok, Schefter said on WEEI that the NFL employee was under the microscope for a while for stealing footballs. Here are my questions:

If he was under suspicion for stealing footballs and compromising the integrity of the game, why was he allowed to work one of the three most important games of the year?

Before yesterday, the NFL employee wasn't implicated in any in-game shenanigans, he was just taking balls that were supposed to be given to charities to auction. He probably figured they lose a couple of balls every game, so why not pinch a few and sell them for a couple of hundred bucks. The big shots in the league office probably get their pick to give to their kid's grade school, children's hospital or local disease chapter. No one was probably bothering to count the balls after the game.

What a bunch of clowns.

This highlights how loosie goosie the NFL is with the footballs. When this story broke, they should have issued a quick statement to say there was no conclusive evidence of tampering with the balls, and the NFL would tighten things up for 2015. Period. By making a big production about hiring investigator Ted Wells, they poured gas on the fire. If they'd blown it off as inconclusive and immaterial to the outcome of the game, everybody would have assumed the Patriots cheated (what else is new?) and moved on to hand-wringing about their crappy free agents and the 40 times of their draft picks.

Prediction: the NFL will release the Wells report at 5:00 p.m. on Friday March 20, 2015 during the height of the first round of March Madness when everybody in the country will be obsessing over their brackets and the Warren Buffett Billion Dollar Bracket.

I just hope the Patriots are properly compensated for being wrongfully accused, and that they rain hell-fire down on their opponents in 2015.

Assuming, of course, that his LinkedIn profile is sterling in its accuracy.

I've seen people lie about their resumes in SEC filings, with nobody caring. LinkedIn, despite its public nature, could easily be exaggerated.
