Vereen - stay or go?

Let us presume that the base case is one where none of the three are re-signed.

So, what you seem to be willing to pay $6.0M for three important positions.

Vereen - $3.0M net
Ridley $1.0M net
--------
total $4.0M net
Amendola ($2.0M) savings if you get him to reduce his new money to $2.5M
-----------
$2.0M added to the cap

I presume that you would keep Solder. IMHO, I think that we also need a veteran interior OL for an additional cost of $2.0M net.
==============================
Compared to the numbers needed on the defense, this cost is very modest, and very reasonable. For $4M added to the cap, the offense is kept intact, with another 2-3 of draftee OL's to be added.

That pretty much sums it up. Thanks.

While I agree, I think that we need a veteran guard as a backup and as insurance in case the draftee isn't ready for prime time, Connolly or a replacement.

I honestly still cannot figure out the Canon deal if he is not going to start at guard for them, and it makes even less sense if they re-sign Solder.

Welker contacted the Patriots and asked them to match but they had moved on.

Ultimately, it was Wes Welker who decided to walk away due to a better offer. The fact that he and his agent contacted the Patriots one last time to see if they'd budge is irrelevant in my opinion.

They offered him 2/10 (which Belichick saw as a 3/20 deal due to being tagged the year before), and he chose DEN's 2/12 offer. The point is that he, along with just about every other free agent here, claimed that there was no place they'd rather play etc.

The Cannon deal would make sense if either they didn't re-sign Solder or if he is to be the "veteran" guard, the presumed starter at LG unless one of the rookies beats him out for the position.

Otherwise, IMHO, it made little sense to pay Cannon $4.5M for the first year of a two year contract. A four year contract I could understand, but not a two. Another alternative is that Cannon is insurance at OT, a presumed starter in 2016 if Solder doesn't sign a long-term deal.

I think the thought was that they appreciated Cannon's versatility, although I believe he's the jack of all trades and the master of none.

He's basically stuck on the right side in my opinion (I don't know if Googe or Belichick agree, of course). I think he looked both lost and out of place on the left side.

Either that, or he stole the nude pics of Belichick out of Bequette's locker, which may be more realistic a thought.

Bill Polian was talking about a different team (the Saints), but made two points on his Sirius show tonight that are directly relevant to Vereen:

1) RB is a position you can fill with a draft pick and get production in his early years.

2) Be very wary of the player who has had one good season and that one good season came in his contract year.

Personally, I think Vereen can develop into a solidly productive player for the Pats, but I don't think it's a make or break deal for the Pats, either way.

Say vareen goes. Would you want the patriots do go after spiller for replacement?
CJ Spiller would be a pretty huge upgrade and would love that - I'm not sure that he would be replacing Vereen as much as taking over the backfield as an every down back though. Not sure that we could afford his going rate right now.

Woodhead used to break tackles while Vereen rarely if ever does that. Spiller an every down back? For the 3 games he is healthy maybe.

I expect Vereen to be jettisoned and to be replaced with a vet minimum type of guy, while shifting that money to more important positions, especially if he'll be commanding >$3MM.

EDIT: Why are people talking about Spiller? There's no way in hell we'd be signing Spiller. Way too much money. 1st round pick that's shown flashes? Some crappy team is going to offer him way too much.

Agreed.

OT: since I noticed your sig and avatar---I have 1/2 a case of Pumking 22 oz bombers left over that have never been placed in the refrigerator and are still in the original box. Will they still be good if I keep them until next fall? I always assumed they'd be fine, but others are doubting me. Thanks.

Better to keep them cold, or at least cool. Pumpking is a pretty hefty beer, it should age fine as long as you don't store in a place that gets hot or sunny. Store it someplace cool and dark and it should be good in the fall. The pumpkin spice will probably mellow out a little, though.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Will do!

Vereen is one of my favorite players, I definitely want him back. He's versatile and if anything underutilized.

Agreed, Vereen does bring a speed element but until this season vereen had never managed to stay healthy. As for spiller, I think someone is going to overpay for him.

Shane Vereen = great pass catcher terrible runner pay him as a pass catcher if he wants more happy trails. on C. J. Spiller he would be sick in this Offense a proven runner who doubles as a receiver always does well against us Brady would love him.

Please stay....love that dude...and has great value to this team

Spiller just can't seem to stay healthy though.

We should also look to the draft for any replacement, in my opinion. To take it one step further, it's a pretty deep draft class at RB this year, so they should take a pick no matter what.

As much as I love Vereen and value what he brings to the table. He did not seem as dynamic with the ball in his hands as he had in previous years.

He looked a little bit slower and easier to tackle. In past years, he would always be falling forward and show good balance while running in traffic. This year, not as much.

That said, he is a fantastic receiver and picked up the blitz well. I would like to see him return. His skill set is not a commodity that is so easily found, like some of you believe.
