2/18/2015: Schefter Blows Up ESPN's Earlier Story

It's been on the crawl several times. M&M hasn't spent a whole lot of time on it in the first place.
I'll bet they had at least a syllable in the first 1:38 yesterday.

As ESPNs reporter-centered investigation brand of journalism that fully intends to be fact-based, OTL took a major hit in my eyes. Its a shame really. Most recently they did such a good job with the Ray Rice and Steelers "Cleaner" storylines. They clearly rushed information out there to re-establish credibility reporting (which OTL had) with the story. OTL is more than what Naqi ran with. The additional issue is that she doesn't have the credentials (see Walter Cronkite) to support the OTL brand. She got shuttled out there as a puppet of ESPN/TMZ. If ESPN felt so good about this, they would have given Bob Ley with a megaphone. Instead they made Naqi into a canary in the mineshaft.

The other problem with Naqi's report that the OTL (ESPN) story her editors forced her to run with lacked the completeness and thoroughness that this story requires. She tried to couch it as "just the facts" but she- and her editors damn well knew that this story has many layers and unanswered questions. For example..why didn't the NFL official just give the ball to the ref? Why did Kensil "personally"check the balls? What about the Colts assertions? Cold temperatures impacting the ball's PSI.

For a brand that prides itself on trustworthy, thorough investigative journalism, I expected more from OTL. Instead we got a 1/2 ass combo of Hank Phillipe-Ryan, Perez Hilton and Bob Lobel.

I agree with a lot of this, but you are letting Naqi off the hook. I think she wasn't pushed on this report. She has had a rather unremarkable career and already in her late 40s/early 50s and she thought she had an earth shattering scoop that could define her career. Unfortunately for her, it will likely define her career. I think she wanted this story to be true because she thought it was the story of her career. She let her ambition cloud how she researched this story. I think if she asked the right people, she would have gotten similar answers Adam Schefter got.

To be fair shmessy gave him credit once he reported the Schefter stuff.

Fair enough - I didn't see shmessy's post. Also just went and checked that Reiss did tweet the update that was posted on the Patriots blog by "ESPN News Services."

Any chance she's related to John Tomase?

I still think the guy is full of crap, but the more information comes out, the more that a large portion of the Wells report will be on the atrocious handling of the footballs by league officials and staff. According to Mike Freeman, the Wells' investigation is wrapping up even though they haven't interviewed Belichick or Brady. In other words, the attention may be turned elsewhere than the Patriots.

I hope Freeman's report turns out to be true.

Still, Wells did consult with Columbia two weeks into the investigation, which implies they were still trying to explain the deflation/depressurization that far into the investigation. That adds another wrinkle.

Sounds like she can probably make a mean sandwich though.

LOL! I just heard a clip on WEEI from ESPN THIS MORNING where Sal Pal and Bill Polian are talking about this as if the Schefter report never happened and talking that the allegations against McNally are unprecedented and if he did purposely try to insert an unapproved football into the game it would be a sever form of cheating by the Patriots.

Tell me that ESPN doesn't have a bias against the Patriots. They ran with the Naqi story because they wanted it to be true and will continue to run with it and try to damage the Patriots even though their own employee debunked the story.

This is one of the many annoying things about this story. Polian will act like using an unapproved ball in a game is a terrible act, like the Patriots were sneaking in one of those nerf balls with the fins on it. A few days earlier, Polian was downplaying the effect of the Falcons pumping in crowd noise, saying teams could just use a silent snap count. A couple of years ago, when the story about the Saints tapping into opposing team's communications from the coaching booth to the field came out, Polian was saying that wouldn't have helped, either.

It's odd that ESPN can find people to minimize other NFL rules violations, but, in 2007, they couldn't find anyone to say "Yeah, but teams can just change their signals. I don't think it's that big of a deal."

this is about the 5th time ESPN has run a "scandalous headline" that makes the patriots look bad only to have the rest of the story come out and show it as a non-issue.

this ESPN campaign to defame the Patriots is rediculous

Schefter coming up in a couple of minutes after the commercials on WEEI.

That has been the problem with this "story" for weeks! Why? BECAUSE ALL THE FACTS HAVE BEEN HIDDEN BY AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION! NO story has been "complete and thorough." EVERY story has been based on conjecture, hearsay, and partial bits of allegedly leaked "information." So far I trust only one account of this nonsense -- the Patriots (Brady/Kraft/BB). Everything else is a bad dance routine.

100% agree, Tune.

From a facts-based standpoint, I'm ok with what she put out there. There is video evidence if what McNally did. It could be a situation where she had the same info Shefter reported but wasn't comfortable with the sources and she didn't want to compromise her integrity and the OTL editors- for fear of watering down their brand punted the story to BSPN and Shefter and his editors -because they have lower fact-checking standards were comfortable enough breaking the other aspects of the story.

For those of us who took journalism classes in college this is fascinating stuff!

Why oh why do people like you inflict such a false sense of Misery upon yourselves??

01 ~ Money brings Pleasure, but not Happiness. Happiness can only come from being Good to others.

02 ~ The Unjust & Selfish live their entire Lives in self-loathing Misery, and even Pleasure is poisonous.

Yes, I know that sounds like a Fairy Tale to most of you, but here's the Punch Line: It's True. I swear it.

Those who live their Lives only for their own Pleasure will of course reject these Fundamental Truths.

My friend, you're absolutely right. But I'm afraid you're attaching entirely too much weight to my comment, which was simply to point out that Roger Goodell will not be forced to work at a 1 star restaurant for any reason. His happiness is none of my concern.

Schefter on now.

Says he cannot speak for Naqi.

All he knows is HIS report.

Maybe. My other theory was that she had the info Shefter did but either she- or the OTL editors wern't 100% confident in the sources enough and b/c OTL has higher journalism standards, they punted the scoop to BSPN and Shefter did his once-over, checked w/ his sources and ran with it.

AS: The league had been onto the rogue employee and this game was merely the last straw.

My view: Good that they have a lower bar for their own employees.

Schefter: There were 8 K-balls (more than the usual 6) because of the weather......

.....and now I lost the connection.

Callahan: Is kensil a patriots hater

AS: I don't know, I know there are people out there who believe yes.

Minihate; Is ESPN anti Pats - why is your correction not prominent on ESPN from Naqi?

AS: It's complicated - lotsa moving parts in it all (yadda yadda). Just trying to be careful.
