Patriots need to keep Revis, even if it means picking up year 2

The combine is when all the tampering occurs. Over the next 48 hours, Revis will be getting offers from potential bidders. He'll know his market. And, be prepared to roll up his sleeves and negotiate with the Pats.

The Pats are a market-price team. If they want to keep Revis (and I assume they do), then they will make a legitimate market price offer. If Revis wants to remain a New England Patriots (and I assume he does), then a legitimate market-price deal between two parties that want to reach a deal, has a high likelihood of happening. I've never seen one shred of evidence that Revis is an idiot. He strikes me as a rational businessman -- somebody who should be able to structure a win/win deal with the likes of Bill Belichick, Nick Caserio, and Jonathan Kraft.

Of course you have to allow for the possibility that it could fall apart, but I see no reason to be pessimistic. Every indication is that both sides want to get a deal done that will keep Revis in New England, at top CB money, for the next several years. I don't see the Pats low-balling Revis and I don't see Revis demanding above market money in a new deal. Frankly I don't see him wanting to move to a dumpster fire team for an extra $1 Million a year (which he could probably get on the open market). It's not a home team discount. It's simply the fact that the New England Patriots don't have to pay a premium to attract good players to hell-hole franchises like the Bills, Jets, Bucs, Raiders, etc.

13-15million is not a hometown discount, its the market value for a corner. You are the one resting under the assumption that revis is going to get 18-20million$ from a team with nothing to back it up.

No big would be FA has signed with their teams as of yet, yet you are here assuming revis is gone. How will you look in 2 weeks if/when he signs with the patriots?
I will look happy :)

I don't know how much he'll get but those quotes are a little deceiving, weren't they from guys who were still on rookie deals? So they would get a little discount because technically, they could have made the guy play out his rookie deal. I think Revis wants to test the market. If Ryan loves him as much as he says then I don't think he'll lose a bidding war and I doubt BB wants to engage in one.

Ryan is no longer in NYC, he is in Buffalo. Buffalo is not exactly "resort destination". So Ryan would have to come with a lot more dollars than the Pats to lure Revis up there. Aside from crossing the border to go to the casino with Ty Law's cousin, there is not much to do in upstate NY, except shovel snow. My 4 years in upstate NY are the main reason I swore to myself that I would move to the South! It depressing at best!

So if your Revis, you can take what the Pats offer which will be significant, bank on playoff money for the rest of your career while playing with Tom Brady. OR you can go to Buffalo for more money, pray you somehow beat Tom Brady ("good luck"), and pray you make the playoffs, while playing in the frozen pits of hell, in a market with absolutely zero potential for marketing dollars.

A poll came out this year...and i think the last place players wanted to play was Buffalo. Or it was in the bottom 3

My guess: 4-5 yr contract (last yr is for accounting purposes). Avg: 14.3 m/yr. 40m guaranteed.

After years of playing for **** franchises:
  • You've just won your first Super Bowl,
  • Your Head Coach is a first ballot HoFer and arguably the greatest of all time,
  • Your QB is a first ballot HoFer and arguably the greatest of all time,
  • You have an unstoppable wrecking ball and likely first ballot HoFer Tight End,
  • Your unit is accumulating talent like no tomorrow,
  • The team you are contracted to is in strong financial and draft positions, and
  • Collectively, your team is the youngest winner of a Super Bowl.

With your legacy on the line and the potential to be considered one of the greatest Cornerbacks of all time, outside of greed, how the **** do you leave that?

THE OPEN QUESTION
Other than the fact that we are patriots fans, why wouldn't Revis listen to sales pitches from teams like SEA, DEN and GB?

Before all that -- you realize that Revis is technically under contract for another year, albeit a very expensive 20m year?

1. Revis has won a championship with the Pats and he knows he has a GREAT chance to do it again if he stays with this core. Only a handful of other teams can offer him that type of opportunity.
2. Revis knows he can succeed in our system and that he doesn't have to 'carry' the team to win. We can name at least 3-4 other players who played key roles in that Superbowl win.
3. The Patriots can make Revis the 'highest paid corner' in football without breaking the cap, if Revis is amenable to accepting a 'reasonable top salary' IE around 14-15m instead of 20m per year.
4. Revis can cement a legacy of winning by staying with the Pats in one uniform for the rest of his career. The Jets, Browns, Bills, can't give him that no matter how much cash they offer.
5. Revis has said he loves the coaching on this team and he loves the quarterbacking. If he wants to WIN, it makes staying here in New England his best situation possible so long as he is fairly but not outrageously compensated.

The patriots will not pay Revis $20M. So, Revis can wait to have any discussions until he's sure the patriots won't pay the $20M.

What's confusing discussion here is that underlying idea that the patriots might pick up the bonus.

SEA: 20m Revis + 14m Shermam + 10 m Thomas + 7m Chancellor + 19m Wilson + 8m Lynch = 6 players =+- 80m or 57% of the cap. Is this reasonable?
DEN: 1 year with Manning and them ....
GB: Maybe. But i think GB is a really small market to Revis.
I'm sure we made a similar analysis last year when DEN couldn't afford to sign so many top free agents or they'd be in cap hell.

Are SEA's numbers your projection of this year's cap hit? In any case, no one is suggesting that SEA will pay Revis $20M. Perhaps they will pay what they paid for Sherman, perhaps discounted a bit for age, perhaps not.

In any case, my point is that there may be other options, should Revis want to consider other teams, which would seem reasonable.

The Patriots will have to be in the 4 years, $52 million range with something like $30+ million guaranteed to have a friendly discussion.

Agreed--although I'd probably bump up the guaranteed money a bit to 35m or so. I think your projections are spot on.

Miguel Benzan does a nice job with comparables in this story. (Hey Miguel, when I file my property tax abatement, could you do this for me ?) http://www.patsfans.com/salary-cap/?p=1476?sc=rss

After listening to a podcast where he was a special guest last night and hearing the line "having 16 games makes it much easier for me to multiply in my head than say, 14 or 15 would," I now believe that he's even more gifted than I originally thought.

Why not offer him what Sherman got plus $1 dollar?

:)

I think that would be right around 4 yrs/56 million, with about 40 of it guaranteed.

One would certainly think that would get the job done, although we're just not sure if the Pats would go that high.
