What Free Agents could the Pats add this year

I now wish I didn't name anyone. That was not the point at all. They were just people I looked up quickly or already new about that would be fairly cheap or at least off setting expensive wise.

So how about everyone who is hung up with those names just ignore them and speak more to what I wanted the spirit of the thread to be.

Generally speaking. :)

IIRC, Carter had just had 12 or so sacks two years prior and signed for around $1.5mm. He is a valid case for the older vet route, but I'd put him a few notches above the pass rushers mentioned here.
Abraham had 11 sacks just a year ago.

Then I stand corrected. I thought he was toast a few years back.

Sorry, I thought that was the point. Regrettably, I'm not informed enough to talk about bargain bin guys throughout the league. Similar to the draft, I'm much more familiar with NE's roster and the approach, but the players are a mystery.

Ambraham/Umenyiora - Well then what do we do if Ayers walks? Depend on Moore/Buchanan to get it done? Draft pick? I would want a vet here but edge players are expensive. Who would you like that is better and cheap?

Actually if Ayers gets a better deal somewhere and not paying a vet means Pats keep Revis, McCourty, and Vereen. I wouldn't mind Moore and Buchanan if we are talking strictly edge rush. Not to mention if Mayo is back you can use Hightower. Guy was bringing the heat in that role before Mayo went down.

He's also another hit away from potentially having donkey brains.
Which is why you sign him to a vet minimum contract so he can be cut at any time for no cost.

Well if we are talking vet min. then ya bring him in.

That kind of player is more of an mid-season emergency option. If you are legitimately concerned about concussion history, it isn't a great idea to have him on the roster for week one, partly due to the vet guarantees and partly because you are relying on him to fill a certain roster need.

Risks with players like Abraham extend beyond camp and preseason. Even though I was incorrect about his production, I'd still bet against him being signed.

Obviously, there are 100 players that it would make sense to bring in for no bonus money and a vet minimum contract. Is that what we are really discussing?

I think the main focus should be retention of our own players. I dont see the pats having any splashy moves outside of re-signing McCourty, revis, gostowski and building depth

How would Troy Palomolu (sp) look in red, white and blue?

An SI article says he might be released. To be honest, I haven't seen him play in five or six years, but I thought he was magical back then.

From that list, I would take a flyer on both Osi and Abraham......I think a pass rusher is definitely one of the top needs that we have and getting one through the draft at where we pick I think will be tough.

Most people agree this off season is mostly about keeping the guys the Pats already have. However every year we see some movement in FA and I am sure we will add a few.

Here is a list of guys I am interested in.

Eddie Royal - WR (especially if Amendola walks)
Hakeem Nicks - WR (see above)
Clint Boling - G (instead of Connolly maybe)
James Carpenter - G
Eric Berry - S (Harmon/Wilson don't inspire confidence as backups. This guy could he a bargain if he turns out to be healthy)
John Abraham - OLB/DE (If they can't resign Ayers & Casillas this 37 yr old could have 1 decent year left. A concussion knocked him out last year but in 2013 he had 11.5 sacks)
Osu Umenyiora - OLB/DE (same as above. Older at 33 but worth a look and would be cheap)

Obviously these are not all ideal but I think some names to keep in mind as interesting.

Let's just say that ...5 or 6 years have passed.

Time has not been good to a player who looked like he might be an all-time great at one point in his career.

unless Revis is cut and gives the pats 20 million in cap space I don't see them adding any new players that will get anyone excited, I am just hoping they keep there own key players and add a few roll players and have a good draft

Ash shouldn't we get younger on the d line for pass rushers? A young pass rusher with speed? I sent you a pm

In an ideal world, we definitely would like to get a young stud defensive lineman, but those don't come along that often and definitely not where we are picking. We are also a now team, so why draft someone that may or may not help us in a few years when we are built to win now. Just my opinion lol
We do have Buchanan and Moore that are young and might develop.

im looking at mcfadden if he comes cheap, could be a nice addition

He looked pretty bad this year but I'd like to see the pats bring him in too, hopefully for the veteran minimum because there is a good chance that he is just toast
