.....,and more stuff to be pissed at.

Once again ESPN was the source for a new attack on the Pats. Now they claim a Patriot employee attempted to insert a non-approved kicking ball into the AFCCG. "League source"s were again what they went with, as Kensil continued to use the Pats as his own private piñata.

This came out yesterday. PFT made one post, largely uncritical of the Pats, and hasn't followed up, as they usually do. ESPN once again has made it a big deal, giving it a full 5 minute segment to the topic. Plus I had to wake up to my Comcast Home page where the top sports story was "Pats hit with another Scandal"

But here's the curious thing. I checked over at NFL.com and they have NOTHING concerning these new allegations. It has been over 12 hours since the original story came out and yet NFL.com hasn't even commented. WHY is that?

So on one hand I'm pissed at the allegation. I'm pissed at the use of unsubstantiated leaks by the league in a blatant attempt to tarnish my team. And I'm pissed that my team isn't fighting back harder. HOWEVER, I wonder why a sports new organization as equally aggressive and also lacking any journalistic ethics, has not moved in on this "juicy" story (as of 10am this morning). Could it be, they don't want to get caught on the wrong side of an obvious smear attempt. One that's so blatant even THEY don't want to be part of. I don't know but I can hope.

Ken - the league isn't saying anything because ESPN is doing it for them. Who do you think the four sources are? It's the NFL, Ken. No way around it. This is a PR move to swing things back in their favor.

They don't want the court of public opinion to forget the Patriots are cheaters. Because when they release the report next month and have no evidence to prove so, they will have to bank on guilty until proven innocent to justify their time & expense in the investigation, and the purported outrage or disgust (remember Mort's report) directed at the Patriots when they measured their balls at half-time [without knowing what to expect!].

The NFL should look silly, the intellect of their people should be directly called into question. Kensil should be mocked for being a dope who didn't realize the balls would register at a lower PSI. That all should happen. It won't. Because the NFL has been savvy enough to leak out and spin information from day one, to the point that no amount of scientific information could possibly exonerate the Patriots.

We are witnessing a back & forth between the Patriots and the NFL, and it is clear now that there is a faction in the NFL that is very sick of the Patriots and wants to take them down a notch. Unfortunately for them, they picked an issue that they did not understand scientifically, and seems the Patriots are fully innocent. Don't expect the league to acknowledge that.

I expect this latest leak is the league reacting to Belichick's flippant remarks on the Letterman show. Because the league is that stupid and petty.

Its interesting I was just channel surfing and Dan Patrick on his show on NBCsports were talking about it. Their universal take was "Huh?". What are they talking about. Patrick complained the headline says one thing yet the when he reads the article it doesn't confirm it. Then he had Tom Curran on, who said basically the same thing. The whole thing was nothing but a non-story.

What neither DIDN'T say, and should have, was the whole thing smacks at a continuing smear campaign by league ore someone at the league offices. Patrick, it's sad to report, believes that no matter what happens, the Pats legacy is stained. OTOH, Curran believes that in the future people will look on Deflategate as when those envious of the Pats success tried to derail them with bogus claims.

I was pleased that Patrick said the most people don't even know what spygate is about, and wrongfully believe they were filming practices, etc. But he never followed up.

Just a note. Its now 11am. The story has spread to Comcast, and the Dan Patrick show, and STILL no mention of it on NFL.com

Interesting takes - I think Curran's is wishful thinking. It may come to pass, but it will be in quite a long time.

The only thing we can hope for at this point is that the league's investigation inadvertently turns up something that shows the league/Colts did not start the investigation in good faith. In the Incognito case, they went through texts, emails, phone, etc. - we can only hope that something turns up in the Patriots favor here. Because the absence of evidence will not exonerate the Patriots. Only something equally salacious will appease the detractors.

Was there any update mentioned on the Rats blatant tampering?

Sorry buddy, once again it seems the league's investigation reporting is very selective.
I can only hope that this real issue will heat up as we get closer to the draft.

BTW- The thing I DON'T want is for Bob Kraft to let this die. So I think its very important that we as fans let him know that we care about it and he NEEDS to continue to put the league's feet to the fire.

What I find fascinating about this story is that, rather than supplementing the prior allegations, it contradicts them in a non-trivial way, namely how what's-his-name got involved.

It this were testimony, it would ruin the witness' credibility without a mountain of corroborating evidence along with a sound explanation for why the story changed. Even if it were two witnesses, it would still create doubt because the two stories cannot possible happen concurrently. They can both point to the same accused, but one still must be wrong.

We'll see if the media picks up on this fact. You can't just keep modifying the story until you have one that makes the most sense. Any change results in a heavier burden of proof, no matter how similar the subject matter.

For what its worth the article said they had ONE source giving the information and 3 other sources who confirmed McNally worked for the Pats.

They have a picture of him handing the ball to the official, and I have to say the ball does look suspicious.

It's the off season. What could generate more segment-interest and ratings than inventing Patriot scandals? The sooner people start thinking of ESPN the same way they think of "Bat Boy Escapes" National Inquirer cover stories, the more at peace with it they'll become.

On a compassion side, this non-story will give poor Jet fans a reason to go to their boards. The new JI board's format is so irritating it makes be want to scratch my eyes out, and is a shadow of its former self. ;)

After giving this a few moments thought, I am convinced this report has been put out there as an alternative to Grigson being the impetus for the investigation. With current speculation being that the Colts deflated the one ball, this new report says it was the ref that told Kensil, not Grigson. This presumably would take the heat off of Indy as a suspect.

However, I still don't know how they can back away from Vincent's statement that Grigson prompted the investigation. Are they really expecting us to believe that these were two separate and distinct occurrences that just happened in the same game by coincidence? Supposedly the Patriots have been doctoring footballs for years and it just so happens that in one game they are not only caught but caught twice? Yeah makes total sense.

I really have no idea why I am giving any more thought to this obvious nonsense.

The facts seem to be trending toward Kensil setting us up, rather than the Colts setting us up.

This poses a problem for the NFL: ratting out their own employee as a weasel.

I think that they will try all they can to not do that, to have a wishy-washy "we just don't know what happened" verdict

These stories seem to be following a curious pattern. Two weeks before the Super Bowl when football is at it's peak the story first comes out. It slowly dies after the Super Bowl is over.

Now this story comes out right before the combine. Again grabbing headlines.

So I guess the next story will come out before Free Agency.

And then the conclusion will probably come out before training camp.

Oh what a tangled web we weave, Kensil! What a tangled web!!

I am now 1000% convinced the Patriots did nothing wrong. Up until now, I thought the NFL must have something that we don't know about, otherwise why would they continue to believe the Patriots are guilty and continue to leak stories to justify their investigation?

A guy handed a non-approved special teams football to a referee. Had the ball been approved, it would have been one of thirteen balls used by both teams on special teams. There was no attempt to forge authentication to the ball. Wow. The smoking gun has finally sounded.

I'm going to laugh when Kraft twists the figurative knife into Goodell's back. Goodell will likely go down as the biggest buffoon in NFL history.

I agree about the wishy-washy verdict.

The question remains: if it is Kensil, where did he get the idea the Patriots were doing something illegal with their footballs? It's very curious. The K-ball thing doesn't add up.

We've heard the Colts thought they were flat in November. We've heard D'Qwell Jackson said they were flat. He said that's not true. We've heard Grigson started the investigation. We've heard now Kensil started it. We've heard Kensil inflated the balls back himself. We've heard the refs checked & inflated the balls. We've heard the Patriots were re-inflating the balls on the sideline to start the second half and thus the delay. Obviously, there's a lot of misinformation out there.

If the league comes out and says 'well we can't conclusively find that the patriots did any thing wrong but we're going to fine them anyways just on suspicion Then the Krafts have to go Al Davis on the Colts and the league front office. The team not only loses its good name i'm sure there is also monetary damage. It appears that the league office is totally dysfunctional with all the leaks and mis-management. We keep hearing about deflate gate in some manor through leaks, but nothing about jest tampering, the falcons, pumping noise or clevelands owner talking to the side lines during a game.

I'd still be interested on why NFL.com STILL hasn't commented on this issue. It doesn't seem like their standard operating procedures. As of now they seem to be comfortable about being a day late on a story, in an industry which usually marks wins and loses by minutes. You got to figure there has to be a reason. What do they know that keeps them from running with it? Everyone else is.

We need Fencer's journalistic connections to find out why.
