lAfter reading a few of the first pages you guys have me all excited about the draft but without any real knowledge about the players you are all talking about. Still I have the urge to participate. So rather than just throw names out there, I'd rather offer a preferred strategy for this draft.

A lot of what will happen in this draft will depend on what the Pats do with the key FA's they already have right now. So here are my assumptions, and then I'll go from there. Resign:

Darelle Revis
Devin McCourty
Shane Vereen
Stephen Gostkowski
Seaver Siliga
James Develin

I'm going to hold off on Branch until after the draft and sign him or not depending on what I added. He should still be there. I'm going to hold off on Ayres as well. Whether the Pats sign Ayers early will tell us a lot about what they think about the futures of Moore and Buchannon. His steep drop off in playing time makes me think they don't think as highly of him as the media does. Having enough DE depth so we can significantly reduce the snaps of Ninko and Jones has to be a primary goal of this off season. Maybe Ayres is the answer. Maybe it's Moore or Buchannon. Maybe it's someone in the draft. I don't know but it has to be someone.

I resign Vareen, but I acknowledge that he could be over priced. If that happens, I'd go back to Ridley and hope for the best between White (who I have no confidence in) or a vet FA.

Off season draft strategy -

1. Assuming I get most of my own FA's resigned, I have enough talent to make a deep playoff run if I didn't even get a draft pick

2. To that end I see 3 key areas where I want to see up grades in physical talent. Interior OL, Interior DL, and pass rusher. Everything else would be just increased competition at camp.

3. If that is the case, then my strategy has only 3 ways to go.
a. Quality over quantity. That means using picks to move up whenever you have the chance. This way you may come out of the draft with say, only 4 players, but all would be higher quality guys than you'd expect to get at #32 at each round.
b. Make this the high risk reward draft, especially with player who have injuries. This should be the year where you can take all the chances you can get for those kinds of pick.
c. Don't trade down, trade out into 2016. Trading down means more picks in a year when you need fewer picks not more. Instead, if you don't see value where you are, trade down and pick up a new pick in 2016.

Everyone in the league is looking for interior pass rushers. You can't have too many. We have secured one excellent prospect in Easley, but we need another more physical guy. Someone with a Tommy Kelly or Ngata like physical style. If there is one there at 32 you grab him in a nanosecond. If there is one that you like that drops down around 20, you move heaven and earth to go up and get him. If there is one thing we HAVE to have in this draft is a high quality bit DT

We proved with the Stork and Flemming picks you can get quality interior OLmen in the mid rounds, which is an area where we have a ton of picks. I have also heard that THIS is a year which is very deep in pure pass rushers.

So this is what I do. My first priority is find that big tall DT I'd trade my 3rd to move up to get a guy I liked. I'd trade both my 4th and 5th to move up in the 2nd to get my pass rusher. Finally I use my comp 3rd and top 4th to draft my OLmen, and still have my 6th and 7th to look at some high risk and reward plays regardless of position.

What I would take from this draft would be anything close to what we got out of this last one. I'd want my DT to be good enough to be in the DT rotation. I'd want one of my offensive linemen to end up starting. And I'd want my pass rusher to bet good enough to use as a specialist in packages. Then if nothing else happens I'd be thrilled. You guys can fill in the names for me for now

I'm fine with bringing McCourty and Revis back. Everything else is icing on the cake IMO. I'm curious about the price on Vereen. Is he any better than a guy like Ahmad Bradshaw? I don't think so. Nowhere near as good as D. Sproles who got 10.5m/3 yr. 4 years ago we went ol and 2 rb's when I thought for sure we'd go 3-4 DE and 3-4 OLB. Maybe, we go
We don't have a 6th.
We have TB's 6th. They got our 5th. Casillas trade

I will go super light on the draft at such an early point. I'd like to see:

32) DE-Owamagbe Odighizuwa-the NFL is a speed league and this guy brings the athleticism. I worry about the hip, but he's young. Also, he interviews very well-a highlight of many current Patriots.

64) DT-Gabe Wright-the NFL is a speed league and this guy brings the athleticism. Keep packing the line with athletes. Criticism has been of his tunnel vision in getting to the quarterback, but technique can be refined. Good interviewee.

96) OG-Tre Jackson-if he lasts this long it would be nice to have a dancing bear on the line. We need guys who are light on their feet with size, and Tre brings both. Good interviewee.

That's about as deep as I'll venture at the moment, until I get caught up with the prospects. My focus is on defensive line speed and depth. I hope Easley can come back fully healthy to add to the depth, but just in case I've projected our top two picks on DL. Even if Easley does come back in full health, it makes sense to prepare for Wilfork's possible decline.

I also touched on interviews for each player, because that is a pretty clear trait that most Patriots possess, so I'd expect our draftees to fit the bill as well. That's the primary reason I don't have guys like Bud Dupree on my watch list at all. He seems like he'd have trouble with basic math, much less complicated schemes.

Very nice mock. Love the cann pick, he could be special in our offense as well as a day one starter. Plus I like all the 3rd and 4th rounders.

tre jackson/josue matias? two of the fsu lineman since erving will probably be gone

which one is better??

All About The Upside Pre-Combine Mock

I'm using the Playthedraft website for the big board for rounds 1-3 which they focus on and CBS subsequently. Excellent site that provides the most up to date big board out there that interprets current draft thinking along the lines of a stock market.

32 **TRADE**

Trade 32 for 44 and 4th, 5th round

44 Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State

Smith is the type of WR BB has regularly drafted (Boyce, Price, Jackson, Tate) so far to no avail. But Smith's ability to play fast and his experience as a gunner (Lance Zierlein at nil.com calls him the best gunner in college football) gives him an edge as someone who can contribute day one. The Ohio State connection also helps.

**Trade** - Trade 64, 96, 5th rounder from previous trade for No. 48

48 Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DL, UCLA

Becoming more and more comfortable with understanding how Obdighizuwa can help the team thanks to a couple of additional Draft Breakdown videos added yesterday. Odighizuwa can be a beast playing the inside sub rusher role (a la Michael Bennett) and whilst he won't get a tonne of sacks bending the edge on the outside, he'll win against the run and when stunting inside. His upside is probably 8-10 sacks per season, much like Nink, but he'll consistently make opposing QBs uncomfortable when rushing from the inside position.

**Trade 101 and 4th from previous trade for 83**

83 Jeremiah Poutasi, OL, Utah or Cedric Ogbuehi, OL, Texas A&M

Doesn't have the feet to play LT but could be a massive road grading OG. I'd also be tempted by a FA signing place holder for 2015 and drafting Cedric Ogbuehi for 2016 and beyond.

97 Marcus Hardison, DT, Arizona State

He's raw and probably not a plug and play guy but Hardison has some tremendous upside. With his burst at the snap and athleticism, he's someone that could back up Easley (and replace Chris Jones) early and with him being 311lbs, he has the size to play the 5-tech and 1-tech in time when he learns to use his hand better.

6th (From TB) Jean Sifrin, TE, UMass or Blake Bell, TE, Oklahoma

Outstanding and athletic receiving TE who is down at this end of the draft because he's 27 years old. Saffron is here because I'm very impressed with his skill set but in truth, he's probably too much like Tim Wright. However, if Wright is still part of the future, Bell and his upside makes more sense as a potential Hooman replacement.

7th (From Ten) Ryan Delaire, EDGE, Towson

A name to watch for at the combine. He's rumoured to run in the 4.6s at the combine at 250lb which would put him in the Khalil Mack, Anthony Barr range. Exciting small school sub-rusher off the edge. Would allow us to finally say goodbye to Jake Bequette.

I could live with John Miller in the third round. However, with the other two, no freakin' way.

I like your strategy and mine too. Get Odighizuwa at 32. Add a guard at 64. There should be a few left to choose from. I'd even move up a little for Iggy. Like we did for Chandler Jones in 2012.

There is a little bit of depth at the skill positions. Attack those in rounds 3-4.

I always base my mocks off of CBS's rankings and other mocks but this is just a remindeder for everyone, that it is way too early, a mock last year in February had 3 QBs going in the top 3, Bortles, Bridgewater, Manziel and this is from 2/2013 http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=10&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CFMQFjAJ&url=http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/pete-prisco/21732607/2013-nfl-mock-draft-chiefs-select-geno-smith-with-first-pick&ei=HlvfVN-mF8qagwSA0YCQCA&usg=AFQjCNFK_pilbwiPFaBJmBAE0meHEa5_eA&bvm=bv.85970519,d.eXY

Oh man! Jonathan Cooper to the Pats. LOVED his tape. What a shame his career has been derailed by injuries so far.

Last bump before the Combine. Assume the Pats are able to keep key FAs, at least for now.

1(32) - Todd Gurley - RB - Georgia. 6' 0 3/4" 225#. For a second straight year the Pats get a top 10 talent because of an ACL injury. I don't generally believe in taking a RB in the 1st, but Gurley could easily be the BVA if he is on the board at 32.

2(64) - AJ Cann - OG - South Carolina. 6' 3 1/4" 311#. A plug and play started at LG. I don't think he's a 1st round talent, but I'd love him in the 2nd, even if we have to trade up.

3(96) - Marcus Hardison - DT/DE - Arizona St. 6' 3 1/8" 311#. The most versatile big man in this draft. Can play anywhere from the 7 to the 0/1. That versatility will allow BB to make Easley and Hardison the DL equivalent of Collins and Hightower.

3(97 - comp) - Max Valles - EDGE - Virginia. 6'5" 240#. Collinesque movement skills.

4(100 - from TB) - Ali Marpet - OL - Hobart. 6' 3 3/4" 307#. Dane Brugler calls him a "bargain basement Zack Martin". Has 5 position potential versatility, but projects best to guard. It would be poetic justice to get a stud OL with the TB pick from the Mankins trade.

4. Best available value. Guys I like include WR Tre McBride, TE Jeff Heurman, DB Josh Shaw, DB Ladarius Gunter, DL Ellis McCarthy, and LB Kwon Alexander. This pick could also be used to trade up for AJ Cann in the second round.

6 (from TB). DeAndre Smelter - WR - Georgia Tech. 6'3" 222#.

6 (comp). Nick Marshall - CB - Auburn. 6' 1 1/2" 205#.

7 (from Tenn). Best available value. Guys I like include TE Blake Bell, TE Jesse James, and DT Terry Williams.

Quick Mock using the CBS Rankings. Just wanted to show the kind of haul and strategy we could come away with. I went into it with the goal of wanting to improve both lines and get Tom some weapons.

1. Eddie Goldman DT FSU
I know he isn't everyone's favorite on here, but he can 2-gap, rush the passer in the 4-3 from the interior and even set the edge as a 4-3 end in obvious rushing situations to spell Chandler Jones. Would also allow the team to use Easley as more of a chess piece, rotating at RE and as a sub rusher.

2. Tevin Coleman RB Indiana
Even if Vereen is kept, there is carries for Coleman in this backfield. If Vereen isn't around next year, he could fill in as the 3rd down back. Perfect fit for the offense and another player to keep defenses honest and give Tom more time. A special back will make this offense even more lethal, Coleman could be that.

3. Jeremiah Poutasi OT Utah
Talked about here plenty, can compete for a starting spot right away at OG.

3 (comp) Cedric Ogbuehi OT Texas A&M
1st round talent and potential left tackle in the NFL. If he can't go because of his ACL, you IR him and have him for the future. But there is also the possibility of putting him on PUP and having him compete for an OG spot this year.

4A. Ben Koyack TE Notre Dame
Not a Gronk clone by any means, but if Gronk goes down this whole offense changes and Koyack would allow them to keep some things the same. He is a well-rounded player, who I believe will show off surprising athleticism at the combine and is one of the top blockers in the class. Can be a redzone threat and could add some wrinkles to the offense if you want to get him, Gronk and Wright on the field at the same time. Cap is going to be tight, Hoo-man might be a place they could save money. Also, Hooman and Wright are free agents after this year. Need to add to the pipeline.

4. Ellis McCarthy DT UCLA
Big time project, but a Wilfork successor and pure run-stopper. Would eat up double teams and keep the LB core free of blockers. Have a lot of playmakers on this defense, someone has to do the dirty work.

6A. Max Valles LB UVA
Athletic and rangy, more of a pass rusher right now, but as Mayo says, one of the few players who could be a Jamie Collins-lite in this draft. Wanted a more of a coverage LB, but Valles could fill a lot of roles and has a huge upside.

6 (comp) Antwan Goodley WR Baylor
Wanted someone who could compete with Boyce, Dobson and Tyms for the leftover WR spots. Can be a good special teams player while he develops as a WR and even play in the backfield some. Nice YAC ability with Tom hitting him in stride and he is extremely athletic.

7. Jarvis Harrison OG Texas A&M
Not sure why he is here this late, but has great size and good enough feet to handle LT for some games in the SEC. Helps complete the Oline rebuild.

Excellent, excellent draft. Fine work.

I love the Goldman, Coleman, McCarthy, Poutasi, Ogbuehi, Valles and Harrison picks at those spots, if they are available. I'd take Smelter over Goodley in the 6th, but I can see the intrigue. I'd be equally happy with Gurley in the 1st and Marcus Hardison/Mario Edwards in the 2nd, but I could go either way. I'm not 100% sold on Koyack, but he would be good value in the 4th.

I'm real curious where Ogbuehi slides to. He'd prob start at LG immediately. I like the other picks as well. Coleman was all IU had. And, he had a great season. Poutasi would be a steal at 97. Goldman would help too. This draft kinda suits our needs. Meat and potatoes draft. Not a lot of superstars.
