Patriots need to keep Revis, even if it means picking up year 2

The latter statement. Revis will not give Patriots a "hometome discount", and he has the most leverage.
Past Revis negotiations when he was a Jet should not be dismissed, in terms of his mind-set.

March 10th is around the corner (2-1/2wks), and not much time to negotiate with Revis AND other important player decisions that the Patriots have to make.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst....

The Pats are more in the drivers seat then you are giving them credit for.

He has already said he doesn't have to be highest paid..just in the ball park...and we give out BIG contracts to players who deserve it...and he deserves it

Who says the Pats are looking for him to give a discount? You say past negotiations with the jests shouldn't be dimissed. But let's look at the context of his only contract dispute, In 2010 he was set to make $1m in the 4th year of his rookie deal and had far outplayed that contract. Then there was some talk in the offseason before the 2012 season about the uncertainty of his contract which he was still being underpaid at $8m per (especially with Nnamdi Asomugha getting a 5yr/$60m deal the season before) but he never held out. Then he got injured and cheap Woody Johnson decided to cash in on him because there was no more use with the PSLs sold for the new stadium.

Also March 10th is 22 days away more than enough time to get a deal done. Hell Revis was signed within hours of his release from Tampa.

Trade /Cut Solder?

James White will make Vereen expendable?...is there some kind of easy way to transport oneself to THIS alternate universe?

T.

The real universe is one where it's not always possible to keep the band together. No one is advocating releasing or trading Solder but discussing it as a way to clear cap space to keep other important players.

Not sharing a brain will Bill Belichick, I have no idea what he thinks of Solder. I know he was effusive with praise for him after the Ravens game. But, over 15 years, we've seen other players be praised only to find themselves out of Foxborough shortly thereafter.

You know there is way to extend Solder lowering his cap for 2015 while also keeping those important players, right?

No one is saying "keep the band together!!!" I sure am not one. I'm TELLING you that you must have rocks in your head if you think cutting/trading Nate Solder solves ANYTHING. It creates a HUGE FREAKIN' HOLE!!! You want to discuss CUTTING a 1st round draft pick STARTER, a LEFT TACKLE? after 4 years????

You MUST be one of those Solder haters that no matter what has to stamp his feet and put his fingers in his ears. You ARE going to very disappointed.

I agree.

There is plenty of time to make decisions and sign deals with everyone Belichick chooses to sign. Many of the deals may already be done, with announcements coming in the next three weeks.

I'm not a Solder hater at all referring to him as a "quality LT" in an earlier post. He's closer to Matt Light than Jonathan Ogden but that's no insult because I loved Matt Light.

Last August, Belichick opened "a huge freakin hole" in front of his 37 year old QB by trading Logan Mankins less than two weeks before the season started. He probably wouldn't hesitate to do the same 6 months before next season is to begin if there is little hope of signing Solder long-term and someone gives him good VALUE for him.. Holes, even "huge freakin ones", have a way of being closed by the Pats. That is one of the secrets to their success.

Joker, I do not want to offend you and enjoy your posts immensely. You just came down on me a little too harshly for just offering my humble 2 cents.

If we cannot sign Solder to a long-term deal, shouldn't we look to free agency to sign a LT to a deal. We could then trade Solder. We need the long-term solution at LT. I'm fine if the answer is Solder, but if he is not, i'm fine with moving on.

...and they call BB heartless :)

The reason you would consider trading Solder rather than just have him play out his option year is mostly driven by cap concerns so signing a free agent replacement would negate that benefit.

I'll get dumped on for saying this, but Solder's replacement might already be on the roster. The Patriots pretty much rotated tackles last season with Marcus Cannon playing significant snaps at both RT for Sebastion Vollmer and at LT for Solder. Would Belichick have put Cannon out there at all protecting Brady's blind side if he didn't have some confidence he could do the job? Do you really believe Cannon was extended just to be a backup?

Perhaps, they would shift Vollmer to LT and let Cannon battle it out with Cameron Fleming at RT. Vollmer is their best OLineman and has been for years when healthy (my major concern with this scenario).

Again, I do not want to be labeled as anti-Solder, but the discussion of this thread has been do you pick up Revis' option if you can't extend him and, is so, where would find the cap room do it. I would prefer a long-term extension with Solder lowering his 2015 cap figure by a few million. However, I do not see the Pats and Solder's agent, David Dunn (Welker's agent) being able to get it done.

I also do not see Darelle Revis signing an extension before free agency or signing back with the Patriots if he does hit the market. You must understand the influence Sean Gilbert has with him. Gilbert is running for the NFLPA Executive Director position on a militant platform of getting the 2011 CBA overturned on account of owner collusion because he views it as so unfavorable to the players. No way is Revis taking a hometown discount with that going on. If you want to keep him, you will have to pick up that option.

In the next week or two wonder how much we will hear on the issue being leaked...

not at all. Solder would never be traded until our long term OT was in place.

I'm interested in the patriots having a solid LT on the team with a long-term contract. Solder is a fine choice.

If Solder is not interested, I think that we should CONSIDER what is available in free agency. There is little downside. If an acceptable LT is available for a reasonable price, then we could sign him and trade Solder. If no acceptable LT is available, then Solder plays out his contract and the team looks for a LT in the draft. Then the starting position can be consider again next year.

The point is that the situation is more complicated that keeping Solder no matter what, and looking for an LT next year if he isn't still here.

And yes, it is indeed possible that Belichick has already decided to move on from Solder, although I doubt that this is the case.

Apologies, KenSims...I run hot all the time.:(

All of the Patriots that have expiring contracts would like to attain free agency. I believe that
none of them will willingly re-sign before 4 PM March 10th. McCourty will have to be franchised
to retain him and Revis's option will have to be picked up. They will settle for no less than the
maximum possible. The reasonable players have already re-signed: Slater, Bolden, Chung. One
of McCourty/Gostkowski will sign elsewhere, the one who is not franchised.

I hope we dont bungled this. I just dont wanna see another patchwork secondary.

Four reasonable players re-signed. You forgot Cannon.

I see no reason to be so pessimistic. Every team has free agents at this point, as they do every year. The patriots have no RFA's to deal with. We only have 9 free agents plus Revis plus Wilfork can be a free agent if he so wishes. In every year, some of the players are signed in the last three weeks. Why should this year be any different?
========================================
And BTW, if everyone wants to be a free agent, we'd have $15M available going into free agency, with McCourty franchised.

CB $5M
OG $2M
NT $3M
others $5M
BTW, I see no reason for Casillas, Branch, Ridley and White no to want to come back for a total of a net $5M. That's about what their replacements would cost.

Even under you worst case scenario, we'd still be heavy favorites to be in the AFC championship game.

Did people really think progress on a deal was gonna be made in 2 weeks especially 2 weeks following the SB? This is the week where the Pats are "on to next season".

Name me one big name FA that has re-signed with their team since the SB.

Just remember Revis was released by Tampa at 3:30 on March 12 and had agreed to a deal with NE by 8:30 the same day.

They were easily able to hammer out the "details" in hours last time, because it was nothing at all compared to this negotiation. Kind of a different situation this time around with a "real" contract and a long-term deal to boot. As you said, it's going to take some time.

Last year:

Belichick: "Darrelle--do you want what basically comes down to a 1 year franchise tag deal (Pats put the second year in place to spread out the hit), to try and win the Super Bowl and go back to being the highest paid CB in the game again at 12m dollars? Your only obligation is one year and you can revisit your situation again next spring."

Revis: "Okay, cool."

(grand total of 15 minutes spent)

No way is Revis taking a hometown discount with that going on. If you want to keep him, you will have to pick up that option.

Oh ya? You got sources in Revis' camp?

And in no way am I saying Revis is taking a "discount". But to say the only way to keep him is picking up the option is laughable.
