What Free Agents could the Pats add this year

It wouldn't hurt to add a pass rusher. Not saying we should sign Suh or Houston, but someone good enough to immediately bolster some pressure.

In the past we have only signed free agents that we know pretty well. It always seems to be from a team we played the previous season or a player that has a connection to the coaching staff in some way.

LaFell - we played Carolina
Revis- preseason work out with the Bucs
Dola - McDaniels coached him

With that in mind, I do think it will be one of the Detroit FA tackles not named Suh. The Packers usually keep their players and I can't think of a notable Viking or Bear player.

I can see us signing from Detroit Reggie Bush, if Vereen walks in FA.

I personally don't want any of the players listed in the OP. I agree that new deals for Revis, McCourty and Gost would make this a successful offseason. I'm also in favor of resigning Vereen, Ayers and Casillas.

As for other teams' FAs:

I love Vince but thought that he was just OK last year. He got pushed around at times, which we never saw in the past. IMO there is no way the they bring him back at nearly 9 million cap hit and not sure that they view the 2015-2016 Wilfork as a starter. His locker room value is still huge, however. If they are going to spend big money on a DT, there are some good one out there this year. I would be happy with Dan Williams, Knighton or Odrick and think that they all would be an upgrade over Vince at this point. Ellis is also a possibility and would be cheaper than the other three.

I think that Charles Clay would be great in this offense and BB loves him.

I would sign Helu if they let Vereen walk.

He may be too much of a head case for the Pats but Denarius Moore would be an interesting reclamation project. Decent size and tons of speed. Who knows what could happen once he leave that wasteland in Oakland and if put in a winning environment with some structure.

JPP was a monster over the last few games and showed what he can do WHEN healthy but will likely be too pricey for the Pats. When both are healthy and playing at their peak, Chandler Jones is a poor man's JPP.

Sheard may be an option, either as an Ayers replacement or alternative.

I really don't see us doing much in FA this off season. It is hard to even speculate until we determine what to do with our own FA's and contract issues. If Vince gets cut, then clearly FA will be the place to find his immediate replacement. The same goes for Connolly, Mayo, and Ammendola, if things don't get worked out with them. If all 4 stay, the Pats should see cap relief in the neighborhood of $10MM this year..

Here are the problems with potential FA's

1. We are not going to get any of the top guys at their positions. First we don't have the cap room, and secondly, its not consistent with our basic philosophy to do so, even if we did have the room. (Revis being the exception that proves the rule)

2. Boling and Carpenter are experience names with decent reputations, but in the end how much difference in production would they make over Flemming, Kline, Connolly, Wendell, and a high draft pick. Neither is and "elite" impact player. They COULD be better, but by how much?

3. Vareen's cap # last season was just over a million. My guess is the Pats would be willing to go as high as $2.5MM, which for most folks would be a nice raise. Unfortunately He's likely to see something in the 3-4MM/yr range. Financially if the difference is around $500,000, it makes sense for him to stay, given the playoff $ and the media attention and what that brings. However if it starts to get over a Million/yr more, then he has to make the move. Question is will other teams pay that much for a good receiver who has been a bit of a disappoint as a runner this year. 11 catches in the Superbowl was nice, but he didn't make hardly anyone miss, and was always brought down by the first guy to hit him.

4. I felt for sure that Ridley is a goner, but the more likely that it seems Vareen will go, the more likely it is that it seems he will be back. Coming off the ACL, he's not going to get much more that a vet minimum/incentive laden "prove it" deal from the rest of league, anyway. It might as well be here, and doesn't hurt that he loves it here.

5. All the WR junkies should note that even if Amendola is released due to cap needs, Dobson, could readily take his place, although with a different set of skills. Those who now summarily dismiss him should be aware that while Dobson's rookie numbers weren't noteworthy, they were the best any rookie WR had put up in the BB era, and when you compare them to say, Dez Bryant's you'd find them VERY comparable. Bryant only had about 40yds more receiving yds,(510-544) while Dobson averaged 2 yds more per catch..(14-12).

The kid was never really healthy last season, and when he was finally ready to play, he was too far behind to earn the snaps.....and then he got hurt again. If he come back fully healthy and determined, I don't see why he wouldn't earn a spot in a WR rotation, and make Amendola a lot easier to let go, and then keep Boyce on the roster or PS as a much cheaper Edelman back up. There really isn't a need for a FA WR, or high end draft pick.

6. If Vince goes, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats make a strong run at Henry Melton - He was a plus player before his ACL injury, who had a very mediocre year coming off it. Often it takes until the 2nd year for a player to come 100% back. He could be worth a deal that only pays him big money if he earns it. and lowers Vince's cap slot by 4 Million for 2015.

I hope Brandon Marshall gets released and comes here on a 1 year deal. He secretly loves the Patriots.

Didn't McDaniels get rid of him. He might love the Patriots. Might not love McDaniels.

If they keep Revis at 25m cap hit they'll be lucky to sign their own free agents.

Three more weeks until they decide iguess.

I wouldn't be putting Berry up as an option yet. We don't know if he'll even play football again unfortunately.

Decision point on Revis is long-term or nothing, I think. I cannot imagine a one-year 25m hit as a reality, and I cannot imagine Revis saying "ohhhh I never really thought this deal would come true, let me re-sign for 2-3 years at half the money" or some other such nonsense.

So the FA future could be wide open, or it could be a very selective - and cheap - year for NE.

I don't see them thinking they have any other piece on the board that gives them the force multiplier on defense that Revis does. Maybe I just don't understand the Belichick mentality deeply enough, but it seems like he's been sketching out Xs and Os for years waiting to have a lockdown guy like Revis. Revis can make it to 35 un-injured. I see his deal being restructured into a 5-year deal, which will free up a tad of money, but mainly just the amount needed to sign the guys we have.

The emergence of Collins might make Mayo a luxury... our capologists always have the most up to date numbers, but here us what I've found on the Mayo cap hits... significant sunk costs; restructure Mayo into a longer term deal and you get out of him what you already put in, with the risk that you're paying for years more for his past performance; on the other hand, cut bait and save a lot for one year...

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/jerod-mayo/

Seems to me like he's a keeper, but I am basing that on previous performance. We don't know what he's got left. Neither does he, really...

Anyway I'll let the serious cap guys continue to hash this out. I think we might be looking at some guys leaving (e.g., OMG, Mayo/Big Vince). I don't want to see it, but it is conceivable. And of course it's conceivable that we just say "Thanks, great year" to Revis. My gut just says you get back more paying/keeping Revis even at a high price. I don't see him hitting the cap all in one year (i.e., $25m in one hit.)

But as I like to stipulate, I am also always wrong :)

Clay would have to know he'd go from a significant piece of a team with no chance to win it all, to second fiddle begging for reps on a team that could earn him a ring. Realistically he could beat out Hooman and Wright for that second pass-catching TE on those plays where 2 TEs are receiving threats, but it's far from a lock.

So... does he want to rule in hell or serve in heaven? And does he want "rule in hell" money for a "serve in heaven" role?

I have always liked Clay and wanted the Pats to get him in the draft. I agree he would fit perfectly into the Pats offense. But this is shaping up to being one of those years that BB just focuses on signing his own players. You can never blame any NFL player for taking the money, because they usually only get one shot at Free Agency. I would love to see the Pats sign Clay, but I do think that they will be outbid for his services.

Nothing gets done until the Revis situation is settled. Then Wilfork and Mayo. If the Pats keep none of them, then they will have oodles of cap space. You could cut both Mayo and Wilfork and keep Revis at his 25 million cap number. But then Revis will not be happy with his contract, and I think we have all seen how that song gets played.

BB must give some thoughts to comp picks when he goes into free agency. He has a habit of signing guys who were cut by their previous teams (which means they do not count in the NFL's double secret magical comp pick formula). So say if the pats do lose McCourty or Vereen (or both), BB might want to shy away form any big FA signings, so he can reap the comp picks next year.

No, this year because they'll be cheap. The reality is the Pats will only be shopping in the bargain bin in FA this year.

Agreed, but the guys listed do nothing for me, aside from the guards. Generally speaking, the "bargain bin" guys that NE turns into assets are players without the big name attached.

You want to find a more realistic batch, pick out a handful of 26-28 year olds that no one has ever heard of, not older players who were once great that haven't been for years.

Well put. It's not like a big name never comes our way. And it's not like we've never made room to absorb one more big name. But there are way more guys that come in with little or no reputation and leave with a big reputation than vice versa. This year is a mystery until we know how the top signings/non-signings, especially the Revis deal, play out... but it doesn't look like a year to make a splash in FA.

Unless of course we do, in which case it was the right thing to do :)

It would be breaking from our normal mold, but we could really use a G in free agency. Boling or Franklin would be ideal, but probably too expensive. We could go the veteran reclamation route with Evans, Grubbs, or Levitre.

You mean like Andre Carter?

Generally speaking. :)

IIRC, Carter had just had 12 or so sacks two years prior and signed for around $1.5mm. He is a valid case for the older vet route, but I'd put him a few notches above the pass rushers mentioned here.
