Seriously...why is it taking so long?

I know Belichick was just making a joke on Letterman, but will this investigation seriously go into next month? Is this really on par with the Incognito investigation of interviewing everyone finding emails and text messages? Because that Ted Wells investigation lasted 14 weeks...

I'm updating my list of possibilities, realistically:

1) The league wanted to find something and hasn't. It's looking at all possible resources, and isn't ready to face the fact that they've made a mountain out of a mo-hill and wrongly accused the Patriots. They'll quietly fully exonerate the Patriots at a time when people don't give a crap.
2) The league found nothing on the Patriots; Columbia convinced them the deflation was natural. They are looking into if there was any wrongdoing on the Colts part.
3) League's got jack, they know they have nothing, but are waiting for the best time to release an innocuous statement that vaguely and passive-aggressively accuses the Patriots of wrong-doing but admits they have no evidence.
4) The league found something and is trying to find the extent of the wrongdoing. Given what we know, I find this the least likely scenario.

Possibilities 1, 2 & 3 assume the Patriots innocence, as I do at this point given the evidence available.

I also found Belichick's "month" statement curious.

Was Bill serious about March or was that a Belichickian zing at the preposterous length of time the NFL is taking to arrive at the same conclusion Bill did in his one day investigation?

That's what I'm putting my money on. It is perfectly in keeping with the way the league operates. And it'll piss me off.

And I hope the Pats management holds the NFL's feet to the fire.

Exhoneration is not enough. Why is the ball that the Colts had the one that is significantly deflated?

When they fail to come up with a believable explanation and inconsistencies arise in the testimony (I'm really interested in where the story came from that Dquell Jackson claimed the ball felt underinflated, only to deny it later), I want to know what sort of penalties the Colts will suffer and what sort of compensation the Colts will be sending to the Pats.

Surely the NFL can take time out from their busy offseason tasks, such as investigating the Rats' tampering charge, to deal with that.

Well, we don't know why it's taking so long. But, the most interesting thing that BB said on Letterman last night was that Dave should come along when the League interviews him "next month." We've all watched Belichick long enough to know that he never says anything by accident.

So, there are two ways I think you can read that remark.
One, he's tweaking the League for moving so slowly. (less likely)
Two, he actually knows that the focus of the investigation has moved away from the Patriots and in another direction. Whether that direction takes it toward the Colts or the Officials, we can't know. (more likely)

We also know that Letterman has never been a "lagging indicator" of public opinion. He's always been out front and acted as a "leading indicator" of where people are. He might sound spontaneous but, like BB, he doesn't say much that he hasn't carefully planned to say or that hasn't been scripted for him. I think he either knows or has a very strong feeling that he is "on to something" when he jokes that the Colts deflated the ball. Remember he was born, raised, went to school and had his first TV job in Indianapolis and Indiana. His roots there are deep. I think the odds are very hight that he knows what's really going on.

Combine that with the ******** Kravitz "apology" and I think I'd be very uncomfortable right now if I were a member of the Colts organization in the "line of command" that day. Their fans are very nervous, if you visit their board.

I would bet my next month's home payment that Kraft has turned the heat up behind the scenes and that he's enlisted other owners who have no time for Irsay. Watch the presentation ceremony. He glares at Goodell throughout the Commissioner's remarks and then makes an "in your face" acceptance speech that actually mentions the 45-7 final score of the AFCCG. Goodell is gone from that stage within seconds of the presentation.

takes a lot of time to ********

Funny how it took so little time for the investigation of Ricegate to exonerate the POS commissioner. Of course it is a lot easier not to find something that exists than to find something that doesn't exist.

Think, people
The reason this investigation is taking so long is the the league office is utterly consumed with the far more important Woody Johnson JETS tampering with Revis investigation.
I'm sure we'll get a detailed update on the tampering investigation soon.

Yeah, they're just waiting until after the Scout Combine so the Jets can know all the great players they could have gotten with that 3rd rd pick!

It's been 3 weeks now since they said it would take 3 weeks. We're due for an update.

I have a feeling that the initial "few weeks" estimate was the NFL assuming that they would be able to d*ck around for a while and then slap a fine on the Pats after the Super Bowl and then move on. Everything changed when Kraft openly challenged the NFL to actually find real evidence, and since there isn't any, the NFL doesn't know how to get out of this without looking absolutely awful, especially with the added dimension of the Colts possibly framing the Pats. That's why it's taking longer if I had to guess.

I was just looking at a Colts forum to see what the buzz is there. It was mentioned at the time Wells' involvement was announced that the forensics team he brought on board had expertise in electronic communications, a point I remarked on here in another thread. One Colts poster, NYCfan, notes:

"When Wells investigated the Incognito mess, he got access to text and voice-mail messages, which he will no doubt do in this case as well. So, he could turn up a "smoking gun" in the form of a text or message from someone nervous in the aftermath, like "Geez, Tom, I took the air out like you told me too and now I'm really nervous." That's why I'm just waiting for the report. I imagine he's looking at the text and voice-mail communications on both sidelines, BTW."

I've been hoping that they got access to Irsay's, Grigson's, Pagano's, Kensil's and Harbaugh's voicemail and text records. I'm pretty confident they won't lead to Tom, though.

"... billable hours ..."
@ (my guess) $750 per.

Any competent engineer in the country would have had the answer in 5 minutes, and EXPERIMENTAL PROOF, in 2 days. Tops.

I think the whole problem is Goodell recognizes how inept he is he hates the perception that will prevail after this is over, and that is that, once again, the NFL has screwed up royally.
I mean after public statements by Rice about him cheating and all the finger pointing and name calling the Pats have had to endure, he is going to have no choice but to clear them and there is simply no graceful way for him to do that, given the leaks and attitude his office has exuded thru this mess.

I hope you are right but doubt it. Goodell can not afford another disaster like Ricegate and the whole witch hunt including the leaks was created to allow him to act like a big man in punishing the evil Pats. If he lets the Pats off, the media which he has stirred will backfire against him.

Another Friday down... Maybe next week or the week after...

They will need to be thru with everything by April 29th, probably before that so teams can plan the draft properly. That includes all the teams that have investigations going right now. So Pats, Jets, Atlanta and Cleveland. But as Bill Polian said on NFL Live, only Deflategate caused an uneven playing field. The communications, tampering and piped in crowd noise is nothing.

This taking this long might be a good thing. If they had evidence on the Patriots it would have been over in a few days as was 1st reported. If they had no evidence on the Patriots then science could be given as the answer because this is probably what it was and this would take a week or 2 max. The reason it is taking this long and they have spoken to other teams, fired an NFL official etc... all while not talking to Brady and Belichick could well mean they are doing an actual investigation that involves looking at the NFL, Colts and others. They may well be pulling phone records, texts etc... Why in the world would the Colts GM come out and say what he did yesterday? The answer is he is trying to express a narrative and that narrative is that this was the NFL as they let them know before hand. God knows how the Colts felt that the Patriots balls were wrong in November in Indy when they were handled by Colts people on the Colts sidelines.
