Patriots need to keep Revis, even if it means picking up year 2

Did you expect they'd reach a deal in a few days?

Absolutely not, I mean it would be the patriots perfect scenario. The way revis and his agent negotiated this contract is really smart on their end. My only worries is if Revis pushes negotiations past 04/01 and based in his history with contracts, I def see that as a possibility.

1) I did NOT say that the patriots would re-dork all the contracts, or even as much as it would take. I was merely showing the possibilities, as Miguel has done several times.

2) With regard to a Revis, I have several times posted a contract that would save $12M in cap room.
3rs/$43M
$21M bonus
salaries: $1M, $10M, $11M
guaranteed portion of slaty: $1M, $4M, $4M for a total guarantee of $30M

2016 and 2017 salaries can be adjusted up or down as needed without changes to cap hit of $13M ($5M plus $1M plus $7M),

Check out Peterson's contract. It is very similar to this with a first year slaty of under $1M.

Revis would never do this deal, this is problaby his last big contract of his carrer. I'm feel 100% confident that his guarantee number is a minimal of $45 million dollars

Revis turns 30 in July. Sherman, a younger player often compared to Revis, only got $40 million guaranteed. If Revis gets a deal with $45 million guaranteed, that would reflect a significant change in the Patriots approach, and would be an extremely risky move on the team's part.

If is there a player deserve the risk of that contract, it's revis. If we are not the team to due it, trust me, there is prob at least 5 other teams that would.

Dealing with revis in my eye is like double-edged sword. It can help you kill your opponent, but it can hurt the crap of your cap

That's what I was thinking. If I recall, Revis actually received a longer term contract with the Patriots, and Revis decided otherwise. I could be wrong on this, but I remember some articles indicated that. What those yrs/amount were, I dont remember.

In any case, Revis got his SB ring. Maybe it is likely that MAX $$$ is now his priority?

I thought March 10th is the drop-dead date on getting a new contract? Not April 1st?

April 1st is the day he gets his huge bonus, I think and im not sure, but after march 10th is the date if we don't cut revis, we have $5 million in dead money

I feel revis can play very well into his 30s. All the great corners have. I hope we sign him to a 4 year deal.

Depends on how you define "guarantee" because he ain't getting that much in bonuses and if he wants that much including salaries he'll need to sign for more than 3 years.

Revis is on the books for $5mm regardless, but March 10th is the date that he earns the second year bonus.

Yup I think his number is 5 years

Okay thanks for the info, so it april 1st date doesn't matter I guess then ? But that's the date that he gets his 12.5 million bonus.

That's the date he gets paid, but it's a mere formality after March 9th.

i wish him well if he leaves us. we can't afford to spend too much money on 1 player. 15 mil per year is the maximum we should spend on revis.

See this just the type of CAP debt I mentioned. This year OK 13M Cap hit. Next year 17M and if
PATS let him go next year it would still be what 13M+ dead money! This is crazy. Plus you still need
to pick up more CAP space this year. Still need another 10 M from some where. By the time the
dust settles you got several players whose CAP hit was partially pushed into the future and that future
won't be too CAP friendly for the PATS. If you are of a mind set of this is the only year that matters then
this may be the way to go. PATS haven't acted that way for the last 14 years.

The pats will sign revis. Losing him will sting alot unless they replace him with a guy like suh.

Revis is a first ballot HOF CB in his prime. You pay him market value and keep him He's a lockdown corner and that's rare. 4-60-38 guaranteed should get it done. Keep this defense intact and add in the draft and they get another Lombardi.

IF Revis and the Patriots cannot reach a deal, and the Patriots decide to cut him, the question is:

Would the Patriots be wise to try to sign Byron Maxwell (free agent Seahawk) ?

Consider that Maxwell is pretty good CB, and has the height and is 27yrs old. I doubt he will break the bank.

Although, Byron may not want to play for the Patriots....

Just because the Pats pick up the option on Revis' deal does not mean those are the terms he will be paying under in 2015. To me, the important thing is to keep him from free agency. The best chance to extend him will come after the option is picked up and Revis realizes he's not getting a big payday from another team and is another year away from free agency.

If he hits free agency, he's gone. Too many teams with too much cap room for someone not to make him an unmatchable offer and one you would not want to match if you could.

Picking up the option will force tough decisions, but it can be done. Revis is a difference maker. You keep him and figure the rest out as you go.

Maxwell will be going to Atlanta, feel pretty good about that.

Let's see. You want to pay Revis a $12M roster bonus, after which he is under contract to play 2015 for $8M ($7.5M plus playing time $.5M).

And you think that Revis will think that $20M isn't enough for 2015 and will sign an extension for more?
And you think that the team will pay Revis more than $20M for 2015. Make no mistake, once the bonus is due, it is part of the past. Revis would then be negotiating an extension for 2016 and beyond. I'm sure that he'd be interested. Why not, the team just paid him $20M as an indicator of how much they are willing to pay.
