Revis or Maxwell

It both is and isn't stupid.

It isn't because one can imagine signing Maxwell rather than Revis and then using the money saved elsewhere.

It is because the "be able" phasing sounded as if Revis and McCourty can't both be kept, when in fact the base case is that the both stay.

It also is because if Revis walks no other CB will necessarily be signed at all; we do have 5 other CBs under contract, and McCourty is CB depth as well.

sign revis to a mega deal entering year 30 season and lose potentially DMC vereen ayers gost ridley etc etc

or

let revis go, sign maxwell who is a couple years younger to a reaosnable long term deal, be able to keep DMC ridley ayers gost and then go out and add some more depth along the O and D lines through free agency

Yikes...

DMC will be franchised if BB thinks he's worth the money, with or without Revis. If the Pats don't extend or franchise him, it's because BB thinks that Ryan or Harmon can do it, or simply doesn't want to pay that much for a safety. I'll be surprised if that's the case.

Vereen is probably gone, depending on cost. If someone offers him more than BB will pay for an RB, which is never top dollar, he'll be gone (no matter how much extra cap space we have). Like Blount last year.

Ayers will leave for playing time, if he leaves. He has a chance to be a starter somewhere else - he apparently won't be a starter here. Kind of like Woodhead.

Ridley? His contract numbers won't have anything to do with Revis.

Maxwell is OKAY. Just Okay. There are a handful of corners who can bring (somewhat) to the Pats what Revis brings - Peterson, Sherman, Grimes, Cromartie (maybe), Haden...yeah, that's about it. Guys like Maxwell we already have - Dennard, Ryan, Butler, Arrington.

I don't think you really understand BB's way of thinking. He will pay X for a positionplayer. Sometimes he will go higher - as with Mankins, Gronk - for special players. He won't overpay the other guys - Vereen, Ridley, Ayers, Gost, etc. - regardless of his cap space. it's not how he operates.

if they cut Revis. Antonio Cromartie on a one year 6 million contract is about the best your going to get or butler starting next to browner the pats are not going to give a mid level CB 9 million per

I don't want to think of our secondary next year without Revis. He just makes all the difference in the world as he completely takes away the other teams receiver that he is on. No other corner in the league can do what he does at his level.

Brandon Browner as the team's CB1. Who wants some of that?

Or release Vince instead and sign Revis to a huge $15M AAV contract(which saves us cap), while being able to keep the players you mentioned. I'll go with this option instead.

what about releasing vince ( would hurt, but belichick doesnt care ) and pick up the pot roast from denver?

Idk about DMC being a hard resign. If he is a paper chaser, sure, but if he likes winning more I don't think there is another team that offers that to him on a level higher than us. Why jump for a few million more to a whole new team and staff? Seems stupid especially given all the success he's had since entering the league in NE.
Because " a few million" is a lot of money, and playing in the NFL is a job? But DMac really seems to be a perfect Patriots and the kind of player that BB wants to have. So I think we will give him a very good contract offer.

Here is his rookie deal:

Devin McCourty signed a 5 year / $10,000,000 contract with the New England Patriots, including a $1,500,000 signing bonus, $7,825,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $2,000,000.

He's made some nice coin already. On top of that, he's been to the playoffs every season since he's been in the league including 2 SB's, winning 1. I seriously doubt he will turn down the Patriots at 6 or 7 mill a year for another team which might not be as good and having to adjust to new staff/scheme. If his brother would resign with the sorry Titans, I'm positive Dmac will be a Pat for many years to come.

Revis is a stud. I am forever grateful for him helping us get #4.

I still want to enjoy this SB win for now before dealing with a potential Revis type FA tour if he's not signed longterm before then.

IMO, the Pats will be the best team in the AFC regardless if he is back or not. The world won't end if he leaves.

Say "Hello" to Woody for me.

I believe that posters seriously underestimate the fact that both team and the players understand that the NFL is a business. Posters also overestimate the discounts that players are willing to give to play for the patriots. I do understand that such a discount is possible for players who are not trying to sign their first non-rookie contract.

This is McCourty's single best chance for a top compensation. He will make a top salary, from us or from someone else. And, yes, he will earn more than $6M-$7M a year. I understand that posters think that McCourty should take less from the patriots than his brother got. I just don't think that it will happen.

No but the D will be worse

This

So very much this

Revis is someone you build a defense around. Maxwell is just a solid player

I just have a hard time seeing Revis say "Thanks for the ring b****es, peace" and bolting to the friggin' Bills or something. He seems too concerned with his legacy to screw around like that... I could be wrong, but I don't think a bit more money will be more important to him than a far higher likelihood of more rings.

I feel like it's at least a 70% chance that so long as the Patriots offer fair market value and he is top 3 highest paid at his position, he will re-sign here.

Part of the reason Jason resigned with the "sorry Titans" was because they gave him a good deal. I severely doubt that Devin stays here for $6.5M if someone offers him around the $9M that top safeties get. That is a lot of money. Sure, if we offer him $9M and the Jaguars offer him $9.1M then he probably stays here as he can keep on winning. But if we offer him $6.5M and the Jaguars $9.1M, then I wouldn't fault him for a second for going to the Jaguars, because the NFL is a job with a very short age span where you can work, and especially where you can earn good money.

I could possibly play along with this if Maxwell was actually any good.

Way over-rated.

Why on earth would someone who is brand new to this forum in 2015 choose Bethel Johnson as a screen name?
