Why didn't BB call time out?

Hard to argue with your analysis of the time out situation. So much was going on. My assessment is that BB had decided not to call one and to rely on Carroll's impetuousness, but that's only one observer's guess. Your's is as good as mine.

On the subject of whether a "better pass" would have yielded a TD, though, I'm not so sure. You might well be right: if Wilson puts it on the back shoulder then Lockette might have been able to hold onto it, but the force of the collision with Butler (Lockette clearly didn't see him coming and gets knocked sideways as they both go for the ball within five yards of the line of scrimmage) does leave that in the realm of an unverifiable hypothesis.
also possible that he could have caught it and been tackled short

exactomundo! i actually made that point in another post somewhere in this thread. the snap could have been bobbled...high or low...it was a risky play...

Jeez the way this is being bandied about one would think they Lost the game.

a week later and the CL's are still trying to find a way to pin a loss on "their" team. These mutts SUCK.

14 years, 6 SB appearances (42%), won 4 of the 6 (66 2/3%). Coach knows a bit about winning, and instructs his staff and players very well. After the first 40 years of being a fan of this franchise, in my wildest dreams I could never have imagined the outstanding play regularly occurring in Foxborough. I always try to pin the wins on the Pats, you know, actually winning the game, instead of the opponent screwing up, or "giving" the Pats the game. We, as fans, have been living in rarefied air of excellence that is the New England Patriots organization.

Not why I'm here. My whole point is that this can't be passed off as due to a dumb mistake by Carroll (the call was reasonable, but suboptimal and Belichick had his team ready for it), but rather to BB's brilliance and how well prepared his guys on the field were.

This is one of the better posts that I've seen on this subject, and it came from a Jets fan on a Jets board;

I think everyone is making assumption that Lynch would have gotten that yard for sure.

Pete Carrol did not make that assumption because in 5 of his tries during the season at 1 yard line to get TD, he made it only once.

Furthermore, as Carrol explained or tried to explain, they were really trying to setup 3rd down for win.

If Lynch gets stopped on 2nd down, then time out is gone, 7-8 seconds are gone and now you are under 20 seconds with 2 downs left with no way to stop the clock.

At that point you really roll dice because if you run the ball, clock can run out because Patriots would create massive pile that would have taken more than 20 seconds to setup the play.

So you are forced to throw for last two attempts and that is predictable and plays into Patriots strength.

So Seattle tried to setup the WIN ON 3rd down by kind of wasting or winning with second down.

MISTAKE WAS NOT REALIZING BUTLER DID HIS HOME WORK.

Seattle really did think that at worst it kills the clock and is incomplete and then New England wouldn't know weather it will be pass and throw on 3rd down and then they can setup the play and win the game there.

What they did not expect that this kid learned, stayed up during the class, and did not hesitate for a second when he recognized the play and made an UNBELIEVABLE play.

TRAGEDY IS NOT THAT SEATTLE LOST.

Tragedy is that one of the best defensive plays was made, but fails to get recognition and accolades that it deserves.

Everyone is acting like, OFCOURSE, IF YOU MAKE THAT CALL, IT IS GUARANTEED INTERCEPTION.

Hell, my Grandma could have read that play, everybody would have done their job, one guy jams one receiver, and other guys beats the receiver to the punch and decides that BREAKING UP THE PLAY IS NOT ENOUGH.

He decides he is going to keep the ball and win Super Bowl.

MOST GUTSY AND INCREDIBLE READ AND EXECUTION THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN ON DEFENSE.

If play goes differently, and Butler is out of position and Russel finds wide open receiver then it would be Belicheck answering the question why he put UNDRAFTED ROOKIE in on that play?

Instead, one determined kid destroyed the best laid plans and won the game!

I thought I heard BB say it in an interview that the thought of letting them score was never part of the equation. Anyone who follows the Pats closely knows how meticulous BB is in his preparation and they had practiced this very scenario with Seattle needing to score from the 1-yard line and having a 3-wide receiver set because they had used it in the past, along with others. He probably played every possible situation out in his head and calculated this decision if it came up and stuck to his game plan. Not to mention, that it probably flustered the phuck out of Carroll who is hardly as cerebral as BB in this type of situation.

Wouldn't it be funny if BB replied,

"Well, i ate something weird for lunch and I'm dying to take a crap. I'm really not interested in extending the game right now. I did some research during the 2 min warning and I know my stomach and if I extended this game even for a minute more, I'm gonna crap in my pants. So I played the game to the minimum time allotted and if it went longer, it's out of my hands. You have to ask a league official. That's all I know, I'm not a doctor or scientist. But I know I ate something bad for lunch."

Go down with your ship aka his D. And boy am I glad he didn't call one.
