Before the play happened, I turned to friends and said, "I hope Belichick/Patricia told the DBs and LBs covering anyone running a route to hold/interfere/tackle them the moment the ball is snapped"... This would ensure no more than 3pts were scored on this drive.
With 0:06 seconds remaining, if we forced a penalty on all routes, the Seahawks would be given a free play even if there were 0:00 seconds on the clock. But why gamble with trying to stop them, knowing they could run two plays in 6 seconds, when you could force them to kick a field goal?

Was I missing something? I kind of liken this to what the Giants did to us in the 2011 SB, when they knowingly put 12 players on D to break up all deep passes on our last drive. They were willing to be charged 5 yards, in exchange for preventing a big play and killing clock.

was perplexed by this too. Not a single WR should have gotten 1 ft off the line without being held or interfered with. wilson would see it and throw it away, then they only get 3 points or 0.

Interesting point considering our Coach is considered a master of situational football.

Ed Reed said the exact same thing on Inside the NFL this week. The Pats DB's and LB's should have immediately grabbed the Seahawks receivers.

Logan Ryan in coverege, he was also in huge 3&10 in final seattle drive where Lockette get 11 yards.

Yes, particularly since Wilson had to throw it immediately no matter what.

I texted the same thing to a buddy after we called a timeout before the TD. Just tackle them. If you do it at the LOS it's a 5 yard penalty. They get the ball at the 6 on an untimed play. Kick a FG. Unfathomable we allowed them to do what they did.

Giants didn't do that on purpose they had a guy running off the field.

Stage might have been too big for Ryan and Arrington. Arrington drew the face mask penalty that tacked on an extra 15 yards earlier in the drive and Ryan back pedalled his way through the end zone.

Pretty similar defensive collapse occurred in the Miami game when Tannehill hit a deep ball to Mike Wallace. They had under a minute too I believe.

Since we won the Super Bowl... nothing makes me that unhappy... but they could make a note to work on this type of situation sometime in July...

Ryan and Arrington were enraging me. WTF was up with them? Butler came in and played fantastic. I haven't heard any discussions on this. I was going to start a thread on this, but decided not to, to avoid looking like an ungrateful fan. What are some other posters view of this?

It was beyond aggravating - I just don't think they planned much for Mathews. Clutch playing by him but luckily the Pats adjusted in the second half.

I think the coaches were late to adjust. Arrington ended up on a guy 6'5, which was unexpected. Look at those plays Matthews made, Wilson puts the ball 9-10 feet in the air. Perfect throws. I don't think you can blame Arrington there. They then put Browner on Matthews, and bring Butler in for Kearse. I think the thought process may have been Arrington more on the speedy Lockett, but the Seahawks adjusted to a more favorable matchup.

Bad situational ball and certainly looks like a mistake, but without knowing what Belichick, Patricia, or McCourty said before the play it is hard to point a finger only at Ryan. If we are going to give credit for end of the game management, demerits are also in order for end of the half managment. Terrible defensive series.

They did not game plan for Matthews.

He came out of nowhere. Was active a whopping total of 3 games this season, all DNP's.

Good points. I think also, that there was probably little game planning for Matthews, being a rookie. When he beat Ryan in the endzone, I don't think many would have stopped that catch. It was very high. Thank God they made enough adjustments in time. Lets hope Butler plays like that going forward, if he sticks around. Edit: I see my questions have been answered while I was typing this. I really need to improve my typing skills:rolleyes:

I thought I read somewhere that NE said they didn't game plan for him at all. Came out of nowhere. But that TD with 6 seconds left was brutal. It was way too easy. He gave the guy a gigantic cushion and never contested the route. Of course this was setup by SEA trying to end the half on a draw play that NE let go for 16 yards then Collins missing Wilson in the backfield for another big gain.

Beyond confused by that as well. Every time I see that 31 seconds, I get sick. Now there's a question I would love for someone to ask BB….enough about the last play and timeout or no timeout. There was zero excuse for letting them march down the field and score in 31 seconds before the half. None.

They even took a timeout to get the defense right before the last play of the half and that is the defense they came up with? That was terrible.

Also noticed how upset butler was at giving up a catch to kearse- while Harmon showed zero awareness on the play. He could easily have intercepted the ball with better awareness.

I know….Butler was devastated, but he actually made a good play. I feel like even if he didn't intercept the ball (which he could have if he had been thinking more quickly) Harmon should have attempted to bat or kick it out of bounds. Done anything other than make absolutely sure he was hurdling the receiver cleanly (although I understand why he did that as well….he was thinking he did not want to give up 15 yards!) Just a tough, ridiculously lucky play for Seattle.
