Free Agency and Amendola/Revis Predictions

I'm curious to see the reasoning behind all the disagrees. :D

Clearly many posters have shown why they want Mayo back and also have made arguments as to why we couldn't get much in return for him . IMO, a 29 year old great ILB with the captain/QB of defense mentality could get us something decent. Manx brought up the Ryans example and Mayo is better than him.

On Vince, I just don't understand why we should pay a 34 year old DT 8 million a year. He likely won't restructure again. Is it just sentimentality?

From a pure football standpoint, we could cut Vince and sign Knighton to a lower cap hit. We'd improve the position, get younger, and save money.

Why would they give up on dennard? He can play.Arrington sucks
Arrington had a fine season on slot receivers this year. Please don't judge his performance at that contract level solely on the mismatch that Seattle created with the 6'4" receiver who had never caught a pass in the NFL. That was great coaching by Pete Carroll, and the Patriots shut him down by making the adjustment to Browner.
The other guy who had a fine season, contrary to what most of us thought when he was re-signed, was Patrick Chung.
It was great to see those guys find their niches in the secondary with Revis and Browner on board.

http://www.patsfans.com/salary-cap/?p=1121 details some ways that the Patriots can create cap space.

Your list looks good, but, I think they'll compete to re-sign Vereen at a competitive salary. He proved his worth throughout the season and in the playoffs (19 receptions for 162 yards.) Vereen has become the Kevin Faulk safety valve on third down and is a decent deep threat when covered by a linebacker in man coverage.

My predictions:

Wilfork, I fear, is gone. I love the guy and would like him to stay, but his cap hit is really big, and now that he's got the second ring, he might be thinking of retirement. Maybe they keep Alan Branch around (Branch, Siliga, Easley, Chris Jones and a draft pick?).

Wilfork became dangerously obese as the season played out ...
Not sure the reason ... but it cannot be healthy and he has children to raise.
So in my opinion ... I hope he looks at his health over his athletic desire ...
If he can get down to 325 while eating healthy then I hope he stays another year or 2.

Fun fact, Playoff touchdowns : Danny Amendola 3, Marvin Harrison 2.

I don't care about sentimentality. If you tell me JG wins the SB next year for the Patriots - I'm all for it, as much as I love Brady.

As I get older, I am starting to feel that there are many things beyond "raw talent" that factor into winning. I just wonder where the line for Vince is... There was one game - I forget which one - that Vince was being pushed around a bit one-one. And it made me remember games from the past when opponents struggled to contain him with two guys. But how much "extra" do you pay for Vince ? I think he is worth more than his skill would suggest. Having said that, the number is still lower than his projected salary...

Mayo is younger. And I think he sticks. Maybe the team can convince him to renegotiate.

Interesting offseason coming up. But when you draft #32 - it's waaaaaaaaaaaay more fun !!!!

We need a young wilfork and we need to hope that easley will be productive and be a player.

For people to say Arrington sucks please watch the INDY game. They left him alone with TY Hilton all game and other than one miracle catch Hilton was shut down.

In the Superbowl Matthews was just catching jump balls, the Pats didnt even prepare for him. McCourty said we didnt have any tape on him all we knew was that he was tall. You can't blame that on Arrington. I want Arrington back next year.

I hope we have Revis, Browner, Arrington, Butler. Logan Ryan regressed alot though, him and dennard can battle it out for the 5th CB spot.

Revisionist history at it's finest.

Mayo, Wilfork, Revis, Vereen, and McCourty are all definitely coming back next year imo.
somebody is very optimistic, granted there are a lot of free agent RBs this offseason so maybe Veren's contract will be less than I think it is

Logan had a tough year. I would like to see Dennard get another opportunity in 2015

Arrington in the slot is money well spent. Lets provide a better alternative to covering 6'5" receivers.

I think one of Vince and Mayo leaves. Love Vince and I would like him to stay but I'm thinking it's the former. Mayo still has a lot left in him, and I am drooling at what our Linebackers could look like next year with him coming back.

Revisionist history at it's finest.
so you think getting safety help completely invalidates his contribution? Arrington played great in the slot all year and really didnt have a bad game until the Super Bowl, admittedly a bad time to have one but still one game.

1a Revis
1b DMAC

If we bring those two back, we're the favorites to win the AFC. We're 4m over the cap, getting revis to an AAV of 15m gets us 11m under and more than enough to keep McCourty. Revis 5yr/75m. Supposedly, wants 45m guaranteed. 25M bonus and guarantee the first three years of 1,9, 10. He's made his 45m in three years. His cap hit is only 11m this year(5m carryover, 1m salary and 5m pro-rated bonus) which saves us 14 off of his current number and allows him to get his guaranteed money. Last two years are 15m salaries with cap hits of 20m. With cap going up. Feasible if he's still good. Signing McCourty with a good bonus will get his cap number down this year too. Maybe only a hit of 5m in his first year. Voila! You have your two key free agents signed and are now about 6m under the cap. Gonna cost Mr. Kraft some straight cash. Hope that's why Brady restructered his deal. So, his guaranteed money doesn't have to go into an escrow account.

I can't see Mayo going anywhere, to be honest. We like to throw out these scenarios, but I have a feeling that Belichick sees things much differently. Our LB corps is significantly better with Jerod Mayo around. There's a reason Belichick drafted him as high as he did, and he's a major leader in the defense and overall team.

V.Wilfork is still an important piece of the puzzle, and played very well this season as a run stopper and experienced veteran leader. I can see your point in terms of trying to get younger, and I agree that they need to continue to draft on the DL in terms of someone to replace him, but I believe that he stays for 2015.

Now..if a guy like Knighton as a realistic possibility, that's one thing, but those decisions will sort themselves out. I'd also have to guess that Knighton will get a nice payday from someone as well, probably his own DEN Broncos who have sufficient cap room.
