Thanks, Miguel. I have read many of your cap posts, but missed that one. I thought you may have put something on the wire somewhere.

In fact, someone said something important, if we keep the same team for next year we are the favorites again in the AFC by far.

The 2 teams I see can present a challenge is Ravens and then a very distanced Steelers.

Peyton is toasted and that Denver team is soft.

We have the Colts number.

San Diego are chokers.

Bengals?




We are going back to the AFCCG again next year.

What is your point? Is Belichick willing pay Revis $20M. If not, Revis can be a free agent on March 10th, if he so wishes.

Belichick can't get a deal by saying that no one will offer more, or that Revis won't get a reasonable deal from someone else. Revis could have the answer of waiting and finding out.

Revis holds all the cards. I'm pretty sure that he is willing to be forced to play for $20M, and $25M in 2016 if the patriots franchise him.

That being said, I think that there is a very good chance that Revis and the patriots will come to terms on a 3-year contract.

As an aside, I do NOT think that the negotiations with Revis affect McCourty's negotiations much, except to the degree that McCourty would be more likely to want to play for the patriots if Revis stays. After all, the savings from the current cap will be anywhere for $10M-$20M depending on the result of the Revis negotiations.

I want us to re-sign Revis. I expect Revis to be re-signed. That being said, the secondary will NOT be scary thin if Revis doesn't re-sign. We thought that we had a reasonable secondary before we added Chung and Browner and Revis.

If Revis doesn't re-sign, Belichick will sign another top corner. Obviously, such a player wouldn't be as good as Revis. But make no mistake, paying Revis $20M is not an option. The team can sign three top players for that money. Also, signing Revis for $20M would make it very difficult to re-sign McCourty.

Respect. But how many of those are lying around so easily? If that were the case, then the team wouldn't have had a then record-setting bad secondary just a few years ago. Yeah, we made it to the big dance during one of those "bad" defensive seasons, but still, they were bad. They couldn't get off the field on third downs if the season depended on it and, alas, they didn't when the season really did depend on it.

Revis changed ALL of that. He made everyone around him better. Is it coincidence that Arrington had his best professional season? Browner was allowed to play a number two role where he was better. He likely what have been pressed to be the team's number one corner had Revis not signed. I don't know if that would have been good for the defense. Revis allowed for BB to get exotic again and use Collins and Hightower upfield, rather than always backpedaling in a soft zone. Revis changed the complexion of the defense completely, and those guys are rare gems.

Can the Patriots find someone good on the open market if Revis balks and ultimately walks? Perhaps. A guy like Talib was pretty good. However, will he be SB caliber? Will he allow BB the confidence to once again employ those intricate game plans with so many moving parts? Revis was the key to most of it. He was being talked about as a legit MVP candidate! As a corner?! You don't just "find" guys like that and I don't think the Pats win another SB without him. Some argued Ty was the missing ingredient all those seasons ('06, '07, '11). Revis made a strong case for those people for why a dominant corner can change things. They need to find a way to retain that guy because this team is built to win again.

Revis must be brought back but 20M will be tough to get Devin back.

Plus for 20M the Pats Could get Dev and at least another top player.

I was exploring what would happen if Revis isn't signed. We would sign another corner (obviously not as good as Revis). So, the defense would have a Talib-type corner and bring back everyone we had in 2014, with money left over (perhaps to extend Collins or Hightower). So, the defense would lose Revis and add Mayo and a Talib-quality corner. I agree that we would not be as good as this year, but it would be much closer than folks think.

BTW, there is no "ultimately" about Revis walking. This will be decided by March 10th.

I want Revis to stay, even at $16M a year. I just think that we would still be the best team in the NFL if we had to go into 2015 without Revis.

Respect again, mgteich. I know the point you were trying to make. What it feels like you're taking for granted a bit, IMO, is how easy it is even to find a "Talib-type." Those don't just grow on trees. We don't know what the FA market will be for corners this off season, so who is to say we replace Revis with even an adequate replacement? NE went from one of the worst to very serviceable with Talib to elite with Revis. And though I know there were other pieces in place, there is no denying Revis was the most important.

I love your optimism about NE's chances of retaining him, and I sure as hell hope you're right in your assessment. Time will tell, of course. Losing Revis to ***ency would deal a serious blow to the bid to repeat, IMO. There is just no one of equal or even adequate value. There just aren't guys as consistent, durable and just flat-out masterful as Revis. Talib was good, but he was seldom there when we needed him most. The team didn't have that issue with Revis.

Revis is currently positioned to make a few more runs at the prize, whilst being part of the overall building. (He is now part of the 4.)
