so, what do the Patriots pay Revis?

I like the contract figure you are suggesting. For some reason I think that will get it done. My hope is this thing just gets announced so we can move on.

The game was enough drama. I would prefer not to suffer through a "test the market" approach with Revis, nor the daily announcement of hostilities that seem to follow these contract negotiations. He is a huge piece of the puzzle.

This is really on Revis.

Is he a "I got a ring" or is he a " I want more rings" guy? In the end money becomes mutually exclusive in a cap situation. Flexibility is needed to allow other pieces of the puzzle.

2014 defenses are built on the secondary and CB play. Why patsfans.com fixates on pass rushers is simply beyond explanation. As such, it has to be understood that CB's are the basis and Revis is a RARE talent. Zero low balling.

Hightower and Jones are up next year.

Much as I hate the idea keeping Revis may choose them McCourty. It may well be that they use the franchise tag on Gostkowski. The Patriots have their work cut out for them this off season they need to start by doing some smart restructures to free up as much as they can, then get Revis done, that will free up another 10 million or so. I will be happy if they can simply keep this team as intact as possible, I don't care about adding free agent s, just address the remaining needs in the draft.

I know you haven't lobbied for it, but I think paying Revis $20 for one year is nuts. As important as Revis was to this rejuvenated secondary, people forget that we also picked up Browner, Butler, and Chung....all making a difference.

I don't think Revis is worth anywhere near $20 M for one year. I'd much rather have McCourty plus about $13-$14 in cap space than just Revis. That being being said, I still think we could keep both but cuts (or severe cuts in comp) would have to be made.....namely: Wilfork, Mayo, Dennard, Hooman.

With Pererson and Sherman avg 14M per.

I'd say honestly 2 year 32m or 3 year 45m and this could get done.

But i am also pessamistic he stays because he coudl get that somewhere else PLUS $5m from the pats that they owe him.

Revis makes what Browner and Chung do possible. Without him, they'd have to keep Chung deep much more often. You wouldn't see nearly as much Cover-1 man underneath and would be seeing a lot more plays like the Manningham play where Chung is just a second too late. I don't see why the Pats can't offer him anything like Sherman's deal. Maybe 4 years/$56M. He's stated before that he wouldn't mind getting paid in the range of the top CB's. All in all, I just don't want to see him leave.

Whether Revis wants a 3, 4 or 5 yr deal, he has to get Sherman, Peterson Guaranteed money per. Lookin at something like 14-16 mil per.
How much Cap Relief did Pats get back from Ahern.?

I thought it was zero. Don't they have to recoup the monies paid, or something ridiculous like that, in order to claim the credit? Fat chance of that.

I thought they did get some back maybe a bonus not sure 1.5 mil or so?

Rather we repeat or not has alot to do with rather we bring back revis. Do whatever it takes. He is that important.

A lot...and i am totally fine with it. Need him going forward.

No doubt that Revis makes the entire secondary better and I can't imagine any Pats fan wanting him to leave. But I don't agree with keeping him "at any price".

Your deal sounds very fair but the reality is that someone might be willing to overpay him (significantly). Obviously, I hope not, but it wouldn't surprise me given the fact that there are 31 other teams out there that would love to have him.

I doubt we see Revis back with the Pats next year. Unless they cut him before the deadline and re-sign at a lower wage. The Pats don't usually overpay. But I'd agree Revis is worth paying a LOT for. He was deadly this season.

I'm not agitated at you I get agitated by the" he's gonna be 34 in four years so don't pay him now" arguments.. He's rare player and they brought him in and won a Lombardi, pay the man.

No one is talking 80-90 million, I said 4-60- 25 guaranteed, but I would go higher on the guaranteed if need be.

Won't be 34 til yr five of the contract. Give him 4 at $60m and call it a day.

From CBS Sports (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...ve-teams-with-the-worst-salary-cap-situations):

A decision on the grievances Aaron Hernandez filed against the Patriots for more than $6 million salary, including a $3.25 million deferred payment of his signing bonus that was due on March 31, could come in 2015. With a decision that's favorable to the Patriots, a minimum of $3.25 million in cap space would be gained because of the unpaid signing bonus installment. Any additional cap relief would come only from money that was recovered from Hernandez, which may not be any given his circumstances.

Cool Thanx.

Brady gave us some wiggle room to keep big time guys like this..so lets do it pats

I doubt he wants to leave if we offer him a reasonable deal. Revis seems like a prototypical Belichick guy. How can you go from Belichick back to a Rex or to being a Jet? He's finally found a coach to match his work ethic and attention to detail.

I don't get the people that say just pick up the option for $20m. They could give him a $15m-$16m per deal which is probably what he is looking for and it would save money against the cap.

Hoping for 12-14 mil per year 3 yrs, most guaranteed. Maybe some of Brady has rubbed off on him. And maybe he likes NE better than another Tampa. He has been on crap teams all his pro career. The only thing he had to play for with jets or tampa was to be the highest paid...that was his SB. Now he is somewhere where he can get the real thing.

IMHO, it's not AAV that is crucial. It is guaranteed money. Let's presume a $21M signing bonus and a $1M 2015 salary. That gives Revis $22M in hand. I don't think Revis is going to be swayed by big numbers in Year 3 or 4.

A 3/$42M or a 3/$48M would give us the same 2015 cap hit. A $22M guarantee or a $32M guarantee would give us the same 2015 cap hit.

Under this contract, the cap hit would be $5M + $1M + $7M = $13M, a cap savings of $12M.

Sherman got 4 years for $57.4 million, with $40 mil guaranteed (that's $14.35 mil per year). Peterson got 5 years for $70 million, with $47.4 mil guaranteed (that's $14 mil per year).

I don't think we'd have to beat either of those annual averages to retain Revis, but probably need to be in that ballpark. I think something like 3 years for $40-42 million or 4 years for $54-56 million, with a substantial portion of that money guaranteed, is likely to get it done. Just eliminate a lot of the funny money.

They can keep him next year for 20m & I believe that year/cost was added to the contract to prevent them from franchising him in 2015.

They could always say they are going to pay him 20 million in 2015 & then franchise him in 2016 as a negotiation point.
