Because nothing helps your QB play better tHan being coached by a complate wash out of a former QB. Couldn't Believe it when I saw that, LOL

You don't have to have been a horse to be a jockey.

K O'C has clearly learned from his (lack of) success in the NFL -- and he remains close with various Pats. I wish him luck in Cleveland (he's going to need it).

EDIT: and this:

O'Connell echoed the sentiments of many that have followed Brady through his career, emphasizing that his ability to lead an offense comes from the immense preparation and work ethic that goes into the day-to-day process for a starting QB.

"It's three things," O'Connell said. "It's the ultra-competitiveness that drives him to the complete understanding of everything that's going on on the field. And if he's not, he doesn't leave the facility on Wednesday, on Thursday, on Friday. He's got an unbelievable routine that prepares him for the next day, and it leads into the next day, and he's going to earn his keep -- in his opinion he needs to earn it on a daily basis as the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots.

"It gets into Sunday and he's ultra-prepared. He knows everything and is prepared for everything defensively they might see, what their offensive plan for the game's gonna be. And situationally, because of a great head coach like Bill Belichick, every step of the way, his quarterbacks need to know what the team goal is either with the football at that point in time in the game or defensively what they're trying to accomplish to be able to get the football back, and when they do what is the plan going to be. That football team is maybe in unison more than any other team in the league, and that's why they win so many close games."

Sometimes a players success on the field doesn't translate to coaching and vise versa.
Gary Kubiac was not a good QB but became a quality coach.

I presume part of the reason the Patriots drafted him is that they believed he was a good student of the game.

Subsequently, he spent some time with the opportunity to closely watch the most successful QB in the entire history of football.

I think his resume is well-suited to the role.

plenty of college players move on to coaching. Most don't get drafted at all. Not sure why anyone would 'LOL' at this. For all we know, this guy is our head coach in twenty years.

Bill Belichick's playing career culminated as a center at a Division 3 school.

Patricia, McDaniels, Caserio, Scott O'Brien etc. never hit the big show.

You need to be intelligent and a student of the game..

I hear Patricia became a college coach as soon as he graduated RPI. He wasn't even playing defense then, he was on the offensive line.

Well you know what they say about people who can't "do"....

There are a lot of people who know what to do but their body just doesn't agree.

Most of the best coaches weren't great players. Good luck to the kid.

It's also true a lot of people who can't teach/coach/manage can only do.

Manziel would be better off with an established coach that he maybe ... big maybe might learn to respect.

Doubt Kevin is prepared to coach the petulant child ... that said ... I really don't care.

Until I saw it in an article on the Browns' generally catastrophic dysfunction, I forgot that the guy who beat out O'Connell for a playing job was Hoyer.

He was a graduate assistant at RPI for a year, took a couple of years off, and by off I mean working as an Engineer. Then a couple years in Amherst, a 3 years in Syracuse as a graduate assistant, then to the Patriots.

But 4 years at a power house school like RPI undoubtedly better prepared him than O'Connell's time in the NFL
