Was listening to Gresch and Zo and they had part of a Pete Carroll press conference, apparently he asked for clarification of the rule regarding ineligible and ineligible receivers... channeling Harbaugh.

Carroll announced that in the SB the ref will stand over the ineligible or eligible receiver and perform some type of symbolic satanic ritual on the ineligible receiver, so the Hawks do not get confused...

Why have a competition committee??? If I were BB and his braintrust would me mightily pissed..

This is not an "onion" article folks, this is the real deal. This is bullshyt.

LOL, I heard this too. I bet the Pats don't even use the formation this week. It's in Carroll's head obviously.

Good for him. Maybe Rex will let the refs can borrow color cards they used to use for Sanchez.

I hope they've dug into the infernal depths of the rulebook's darkest bowel and found another formation wrinkle that they can completely shock everyone with in the Super Bowl. Let them react to the last thing we've done, while we once again blindside them with something they aren't expecting.

Goodell (and the league office) is basically just some dumb, incompetent bro(s) with a big job (imagine if Bert Breer ran the NFL). Belichick is actually a reasonably intelligent person who is very competent at his job. There's naturally going to be conflict between the two. It's kind of funny that Belichick is under the league's skin so damn much.

Even more to telling the defense not to cover this guy? What a bunch of cry babies. Why not announce play action passes?

I hope they invested an absurdly disproportionate amount of time in practice in prepping for looks that I can't imagine we're going to roll out three week in a row...

It isn't a rule change. The rule says that the refs have to inform the defense, this just changes how they're informed. I have no problem with it; doubt the Pats were planning on messing around with this too much anyway.

He hasn't gotten a rule change. The league is just clarifying procedures. Nothing to see here.

Not a new signal. But good luck adjusting in the middle of the game with the fast paced Patriots offense going after it. looking forward to Sunday!

I truly believe Belichick is a genius. A genius in the technical sense, as in 130IQ or higher.

From the rule book.. no mention of signalling who he is..

Section 3 Changes in Position REPORTING CHANGE OF POSITION Article 1 An offensive player wearing the number of an ineligible pass receiver (50–79 and 90–99) is permitted to line up in the position of an eligible pass receiver (1–49 and 80–89), and an offensive player wearing the number of an eligible pass receiver is permitted to line up in the position of an ineligible pass receiver, provided that he immediately reports the change in his eligibility status to the Referee, who will inform the defensive team. He must participate in such eligible or ineligible position as long as he is continuously in the game, but prior to each play he must again report his status to the Referee, who will inform the defensive team. The game clock shall not be stopped, and the ball shall not be put in play until the Referee takes his normal position. RETURNING TO ORIGINAL POSITION

Except for the line "provided that he immediately reports the change in his eligibility status to the Referee, who will inform the defensive team."

I have a feeling the refs will be taking their sweet ass time on this particular part, just to let the Seahawks do the 1+1 math in their heads and adjust accordingly.

Though, I agree with most of the guys here. I'll be surprised if we see this trick at all on Sunday. It has pretty much exhausted itself.

But they are though. If they make an extra lineman a TE, he has to declare as eligible. They will use this if the plan is to run on the 'Hawks (not a bad way to attack their D).

It wasn't enough for Harbaugh that the ref went on the PA system to tell the entire stadium "don't cover" the ineligible player's number.

Ha ha. In all seriousness, the ineligible receiver stuff served its purpose and helped the Pats get to the Super Bowl. I was under the clear impression that we would not see it again, particularly when the other team has two weeks to prepare for the game and the league has already zeroed in on it.

it served its purpose. Now the seahawks spent time preparing for something the pats likely wont use. Lets see what other tricks BB has up his sleeve
