For the sake of this argument, let's assume everything BB and TB said is completely true.

1) Brady is on record saying he likes his footballs at 12.5 PSI.
2) The pre-game ball preparation process artificially inflates the ball pressure by about 1 PSI. Thus, even though Brady blesses a ball, and doesn't want it to change from that point, it inevitably will.
3) When the ball reaches equilibrium, without taking into account any changes in weather, it should be at around 11.5 PSI.
4) During the week, when the Patriots practice, I am assuming that the pre-game ball preparation process is NOT done - just that the balls are pumped to 12.5 PSI and practices with. (Is this a logical assumption?)
5) If 4) is true, Brady practices all the time with a true 12.5 PSI ball, and in the games he is dealing with an 11.5 PSI ball.

I assume the PSI has much more impact on a deep arching throw then a straight line drive (which Brady excels at). Is there any merit to this assumption? Going forward, I imagine the game balls will be much truer to the practice balls.

Does this make any sense to any one? Does anyone think, like I do, that we can see an improvement in Brady's deep ball (and even general) accuracy, thanks to the inevitable game ball inflation protocol reform?

Why would they use balls that are not prepared for the QB in practice?

Making them slippery or however BB challenges the team through practice to deal with the elements is one thing but why would they make Brady go through his reps with a ball that really feels different? Not sure the benefits are there.

ESPN's Sport Science crew did some tests and concluded that the long ball would be slowed a bit giving the defender a greater chance to react. ESPN pulled the video for unknown reasons. Here's the vid on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?x-yt-cl=84503534&v=VZ_S8F3mKFE&x-yt-ts=1421914688

Interesting point OP

The idea here is that game balls are prepared on game day, but practice balls are not prepared on day of practice...

Which would mean that Brady has been practicing and playing with different balls for at least the relative recent history...which would be absolutely epic lol

And might explain the head-scratchers he has thrown at times.

Outside of my point about PSI, my understanding is that the footballs are worked over a period of time. Practicing with these 'unfinished' balls would be part of the process (but they would be at the correct PSI at least), and the best balls are put aside as candidates to be game balls. Maybe the equipment guys do stuff to the balls just like in the game prior to every practice, but I don't know (that point hasn't been discussed). Can anyone confirm that?

As game time approaches, the football preparation process continues, balls are then inflated to 12.5 PSI (with the +1 PSI contribution from the ball prep), and the process reaches conclusion once Brady comes in and blesses the footballs for that day. At that point, nothing else is done, and the footballs begin to reach an equilibrium.

That's my theory, but it all hinges on how the practice balls are prepared for each day relative to the final game ball.

Someone should go back and look at deep ball discrepancy be home and away games...bc this ball prep psi diff would not be the case away since those balls would need to be prepared days before actual game...

...that would be awesome. especially if this whole situation is found to be a sting/setup by nfl and bad-players and the "correction" results in Brady lighting up the league next Sunday and next year...

I'm rather skeptical: if 1 PSI has *that* much noticeable impact on a throw, QBs would obsess over the pressure like divas....

*that* much is all that's needed. I can remember a few times where the deep ball was just a foot off...

But think about it, how far do you think a 0 psi ball can be thrown? There is some kind of difference as the PSI increases. Maybe that's the real reason why Rodgers likes MORE PSI? It would be easier to throw the ball further... Maybe nobody really truly thought about this until this event. Brady's said he didn't feel a difference with the ball, so if you can't feel a difference, there just might be an assumption that the ball is going to go where you think and when it doesn't you just think it's a bad throw.
