The Official Belichick Post Press Conference Thread

Can I rant for a minute or so here? Thanks.

This is what I want to see happen (and this stems to the world at large, though deflate-gate definitely highlights the issue for me) in the business world. I think we need clear and concise principles from our media. You either report news or you provide opinion pieces. You can't provide both.

The news needs to provide information that has been confirmed by multiple sources and upholds journalistic integrity.

The rest can be information that is consumed with the understanding that these are people's opinions or are stories made for entertainment. Think TMZ...

I believe the sheoples of the US confuse the 2 in the sense that CNN reports news, when they report on stories, there is a shred of journalism done here. The same goes for Fox News, ... Though if they did this, news stations probably would go out of business.

Thank you, this could go on forever, but I wanted to keep it short.

I wish I could like this a million times. The job of news should be to provide us with facts and let us form the opinions. They have completely turned it upside down by feeding us opinions while we have to do the fact finding.

Oh no... a mechanical engineer says something that contradicts what dozens of other scientists - who actually specialize in physics and thermodynamics - confirmed.

Next?

They've ABSOLUTELY confirmed the drop in pressure from a drop in temperature. The outstanding piece, and what people will cling to until someone confirms it, is the 1 psi of 'artificial' inflation of the footballs due to the Patriots preparation/massaging/breaking in.

I 100% believe Bill, as I said I think it artificially raises the internal temp thus increasing psi, but it'd be great to see some evidence, once again put the haters (and the 'science' guy) in their place.

Absolutely correct sir, The league and Goodell have invested their prestige in creating this witch hunt and cannot exonerate the Pats without taking a further beating. With Kraft being a protector of the shield first, I don't expect him to keep the league in check,
Well now that Kraft has shown support for Goodell and had him over to his house... The story will be further distorted that the NFL, no matter the punishment, will be seen as being lenient.

The NFL front office has to come to some form of conclusive proof one way or another and really be very detailed and specific with their investigation and findings. Essentially they have to deliver such a mass of information and make sure no stone was left unturned. the best case would be if there was video of the area where the footballs were stored by the NFL refs/officials and that no person other than approved people, came and went. But if we had that, I think the story would have been put to rest.

the world is convinced that the Patriots did something to it and anything counter to that will be held with a high degree of mistrust. the verdict is in, the sentence carried, just waiting for the trial to start (or perhaps conclude)?

Can someone give me a reasonable explanation on this?

When the officials measured all 12 footballs @ halftime, what were each footballs exact PSI?
Were they all EXACTLY 10.5 PSI? Where 6 of the footballs EXACTLY 10.5 PSI?

I think this information is pertinent to know what the "variants" of the PSI for each ball were.

There is no motive. This entire embarrassing spectacle has been a low point in my fandom of football. And I thought Spycrap was bad. This trumps it.

Is it any wonder when I say, when BB/Brady are gone, I'm gone. I just am. The NFL has lost me. The Patriots and only the Patriots have me while those two are still around. They are responsible for turning my love of of NFL football to an obsession. And the NFL is responsible for killing it.

I think a better response would be to go on the attack. Pay back those who ruined your football experience. Why let them win?

I've been retired for six years now, and I've been trying different things to occupy my spare time. Since this has been such a personal attack on our team, it might be a good time to start looking at payback as an occupation.

Belichick absolutely crushed that press conference. He basically pulled his nuts out and put his middle finger up to the media. This has been, by far and away, the most overblown sports scandal of all time. I very much look forward to getting back to talking football this week instead of the ****ing PSI inside the balls.

Ahab, dat you?

Wow science guy...Nye..you don't "think" rubbing the football changes anything? Rub it and find out! I would think a real scientist would do a experiment ever hear of friction? you know like the simple example BB gave you ....car tire.......nah...I got this one ..Only a needle changes the pressure.....1st grade science?

Oh look, Bill Nye the 'science' guy hates the scientific method!

Basically says 'I don't think footballs would do what Belichick is claiming they'd do'. For a scientist who should be used to testing hypotheses and generating theories on data he's not all too convincing here.

That said, the Pats would be smart to not only have collected all data on their testing--maybe even filmed a few of their tests and how they prepare footballs--and release them to, at least, the NFL for analysis. It did strike me as strange that they're claiming the internal psi would be affected by massaging/scrubbing the footballs but I'm not a scientist. Is the process so rigorous it raises the internal temperature, which doesn't then drop for a while? I don't know, whatever it is they need to be willing to share that info so more of this sh*t doesn't happen.

It has been my suspicion, all along, that the Patriots use some sort of device (like one of those electric shoe shine machines?) to scuff up the balls prior to the official's inspection, as they have no opportunity to do any further preparation once those footballs are relinquished to the official. I don't believe they use hair dryers. Irrespective, neither of these preparation approaches constitute a breaking of the rules...as written. And anyone who surfaces the notion that it's against the "spirit and intent" would merely open up an investigation of every team's preparation approach. Then the League would have to re-write the rules accordingly. But then teams would find other ways to gain an advantage...whether will ball preparation or otherwise...while staying within those re-written rules. And it just keeps going. If the NFL wants to remove such a situation, then establish a standard for ball preparation...and complete the preparation of all game balls by a league employee. They could even let the team specify its desired pressure within the allowed range....whatever they determine that range should be within the definition of their standard. Bottom line: this issue is well within the power of the NFL to "correct", however they see fit. It's the deflated leadership, exhibited by the NFL, that is all the more noteworthy.

It doesn't take long for friction to start heating things up - rub your hands together as hard as you can for just 5 seconds, feel them getting warm right?

Now think that's happening to a Football, for probably at least 15 minutes. The leather and the rubber bladder will trap some of that heat inside which alters the pressure inside the ball.

Haha, he really was ****in epic....

I love that man. I will relish every single game he coaches for the pats even more so now. Best coach without a doubt that will coach a boston sports team in my lifetime.

He and Red stand alone. You are probably too young to have seen Red. Bill reminds me a lot of him.

I was looking at the official NFL rulebook online..it actually says the ball must be between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds. It doesn't say
pounds per square inch.
Sorry if this has been mentioned already.

I respect Bill Nye as a scientist because of his adherence to scientific principle. But he violated scientific principle NUMERO UNO in that video, which is "Evidence is King." Nowhere in that video does he provide evidence to refute Belichick's own experiments. Either that, or ABC/ESPN (yes, ESPN) edited that part out.

It doesn't even have to happen to the air but the leather itself will expand in heat and that expansion will drop pressure in the ball because of the expanded volume.

The breaking in a baseball mitt analogy is really good. I cheat by breaking in kids mitts, by sticking them in microwaves or in ovens (caked in shaving cream to keep them moist). When you take a hot mitt out of an oven or the mike, it's floppy for a good 20 minutes. That's when you assault it because in 20 minutes, that thing will stiffen up again

Forgive me if this has already been noted - I have been here since 2001 and I just can't keep up with the pace that things are posted here anymore, but I think BB did exactly what needed to be done. There is a poll on ESPN that showed 73% believe BB and that the whole incident is overblown. Of course it was over 93% in the New England states, and the only states where less than 50% believe him are (of course) Indianapolis and Washington, but nationally, for most states that don't have a dog in the show, it ran about 70% pro. That is impressive. If that was a presidential election it would be a major landslide.

Of course it is a huge blow to our chances that BB spent so much time this week (72 hours, he said) studying this instead of preparing to whip the Seahawks. Time will tell how much of an impact that has on the game outcome, but, thanks to the froth-mouthed media-whipped frenzy of public opinion running against his team, it had to be done. Maybe we will even get some sympathetic support at the game now.

In any case, unless the NFL investigation (truthfully or otherwise) shows any intent by team personnel to manipulate the rules, this is over.

Nye is not a scientist. He's an ideologue not to be believed, who has no mastery of subject matter, and here he's doing the sports ideology analogy as he roots for his SeaHawks.
When The Planetary Society removes him as their spokesman, I'll renew my contributions.

Another note (and again, forgive me if this has already been noted), but one thing I haven't heard mentioned in the media, is that footballs are made of leather, and leather, like wood, expands when it gets moist, or wet, and contracts when it dries. Some Indian tribes used to spread-eagle their prisoners with wet rawhide tied to stakes and let the drying rawhide pull their limbs off. So it is a well known fact. And of course, the ball will be dry before the game, indoors where the relative humidity is low, and when it brought out and used in wet (very wet) weather conditions it will relax. This will allow the air inside to expand (as the contained volume grows) and this will contribute to pressure drop. BB alluded to this effect when he noted that the balls lost 1.5 psi, and then returned relatively quickly to nearer to what they started at, but not quite - because it takes a long time for the leather to dry out. A day at least, I would guess ...

So, the wetting of the leather, and the drop in internal pressure due to the colder temperatures on the field, and even changes in bar0metric pressure between the time when the balls were checked by the officials and half-time, all could have contributed to the observed change in pressure, as could have differences in the instruments used to measure the pressure (was the same pressure gauge used for both measurements? Was it the same one used for measuring the Colts balls? Did the same official do the measuring in both cases? And finally, were the Colts balls also checked at halftime, or were only the Patriots balls checked because the Colts asked the officials to do so?) All of these questions will hopefully be answered, in time, when the league releases the results of their investigation. But at this point I see no reason to think that the Patriots did anything illegal.

Not sure how credible they are but they've been correct before about "deflategate"
