Why they wont:
Huge payday(for a kicker)
Age
Lack of big game Kicks(not really his fault)
Other teams may offer him more money
Kick offs don't always sail out of the endzone

Why they will:
Resurgence after switching punters(the holder)
Highest scoring player in the league multiple years in a row
Top tier FG%
Kicks well in a dome and the elements

Why they will resign:
One of the best field goal kickers in the game today
Strong leg
High Accuracy
Kicks a lot of Touchbacks
Reliable kicker
Proven kicker in cold weather conditions
Coach trusts him

Why they wont:
Only if his salary demands are unreasonable
Only if paying Gostkowski what he wants would make the rest of the roster worst
Only if some other NFL team out there overpays by a lot and the Pats are unwilling to match

What do you consider unreasonable salary demands?

They will (I hope) resign him because he's the best, or close to it, kicker in the game today, and kickers are a crap shoot. I've seen too many teams shot in the foot by unreliable kickers this year.

Everything is relative. According to Overthecap, the top paid kickers in the NFL generally make between 3-4 million per season.

The top paid guy being Janikowski at 3.77m.

So I would expect a salary demand between 3-4m to be reasonable.

If he asks for 5-7m then I'd say, that's way too much for a kicker, even one of the best ones and I'd wish him luck on his next job, if there is a team offering that.

His leg is still stronger now than Vinatieri's was when they let him walk, and Vinatieri has played for almost a decade.

I would give better than even odds that Gostkowski will still be kicking at age 40.

Speaking of Adam, I wonder how many more before he hangs them up. Had one of his best years and he's the oldest player in the league. I still wonder if there's a shot at #4 being retired because it's never been re-issued.

We should make Gostkowski the highest paid kicker in the NFL, franchising him if necessary, presuming that we do not have to franchise McCourty.

The reality is that the cost of a kicker is just not that much, given the value received from a top kicker.

A description of the player's 2014 role would also be really helpful. Sorry for not mentioning that sooner.

There's no reason not to re-sign him other than money.

And this is definitely a case where the Patriots have essentially zero chance of getting a better player for less money.
