this was out of control before Goodell woke up Monday AM. he had no choice but to say a serious investigation would take place.
NO! Just because somebody with an obvious axe to grind goes bleating to the media doesn't mean it has to be justified by a "serious investigation." A "yeah, it didn't affect this game but we'll look into it" would've sufficed.

He IS a hapless buffoon.

And a drunken arsonist took advantage of his weakened state.

Don't let the drunken arsonist off the hook as the central driving force in this debacle.

Leadership means control. He is the commissioner of the league that Goodell's commissioner of. With firm leadership, busting the nads of whatever weasels in the league who are pushing this, you get one old decrepit sportswriter who made a tweet that was never substantiated. Maybe even a quick retraction.

His past incompetence drives his current incompetence. He has to treat everything seriously. Except Jets tampering.

Source said if the Patriots are guilty of deflating, then they're likely using a "scientific" method. Too risky to deflate on sideline

  1. A very scientific method. They used the axis of the earth in January to cool the temperature in Massachusetts. Tricky

Talked to a league source today that said if the NFL checks every team, then they'll find "several" teams are guilty of deflating.
Especially teams in the north, in winter. Honestly, I would be surprised if this happens at all. Opposite of spygate, the NFL wants to use the whole, everyone does it so guilt by association if we can't prove it because they're whole case is falling apart and the forensic experts probably told them their procedures are laughable, and evidence is non existent. Oh ****, then let's claim everyone does it, we know it, but we're gonna just put a warning out and make sure it doesn't happen again because we're so nice. Then we don't have to admit we're idiots.

Not only should the Patriots not accept a punishment, they should get a copy of the forensic reports and shove this fiasco up Goodell's ass because I'll bet it does more than "not prove guilt" I'll bet it proves they never had a case.

The commissioner has much more power than the President, as far as what he can do unilaterally. Rozelle or Tag would look at it, see it was the drug addled owner of the colts pushing this after an embarrassing playoff defeat, maybe even foreseeing what a joke the league investigating deflated balls would be, and just squashed it.

Here's my point: Goodell needlessly gave the media hysteria credence by announcing this wide-ranging investigation (40 freaking interviews and a forensic detective?) like they had uncovered a domestic terrorist cell. This fanned the (already unnecessary) flames by overreacting to the overreaction! He could've taken a much more sub died and calming approach in reasonable proportion to the alleged offense.

The more I think about it the more I think the overt overkill will end up working in the Patriots favor. By going overboard and hiring forensics teams etc they are making it clear no stone will go unturned in their quest to get to the bottom of this.

But what happens when their interrogators and forensics teams come up with nothing?

What happens when all they have is half a bag of balls that were under inflated but no baselines to measure against, and cannot show in any way that anyone who could have screwed with a ball actually did screw with it?

There is a strong likelihood that they are going to have only the deflated balls but nothing to show what happened in any way. And the NFL is going to have to provide a detailed report with a strong narrative that supports whatever punishment they want to mete out, so they will either have to come up with solid evidence and tie it together, or just make sh.t wholesale, which will be obvious to everyone if they choose that route. They have brought out the v heavy artillery, CSI PARK AVENUE. If they fail to get evidence no one can ever say they didn't try their best.

They had to because when the reffs looked they were below 12.5. These reffs didn't know the science behind it. I hate Goodell but this was out of control before Woody Johnson rolled over and woke Goodell up in bed.

After the Forensics team comes up with the same results that some Youtubers have come up with, don't be surprised if Goodell hires Fox Mulder and Dana Skully to find out if aliens were involved.

The league has been in a constant "out of control" state since he was commissioner. when he came in with all these over the top fines and unnecessary judgments on off field incidents that should have been left to law enforcement. he created precedents whereby every decision would seem unfair compared to his past bumbling overkill.

I am NOT arguing against him being incompetent!

But who are you? Irsay's lawyer?

It is IRSAY who is the villain in this. Goodell is Barney Fife.

Rozelle and Tagliabue also did not have 24 hour news cycle internet media being able to manufacture "gates". Rozelle thought TMZ meant "too much zucchini".

It is 2015. Ike and JFK could keep their mistresses out of the papers even while the press knew everything.

Goodell was complicit in fueling this fiasco by ordering an over-the-top investigation. (I've been saying this for several posts now.)

We agree, then. I thought you said it was inevitable and i said with a true leader we would hardly even know there was a charge.

I mean, this is a major embarrassment for a league that's been full of other embarrassments.

That's true. nevertheless, CEOs and politicians with much more important things to deal with manage to keep them out of the news, or at least out of the public dialogue day after day.

I takes a major collapse to even know these people exist (bordering on politics, so I'll stop).

Is it possible that this was all schemed by the Colts organization and they deflated the Patriots footballs?

This is just giving an out to all the haters and big mouths, they can say they didn't catch the Patriots but the evil Belichick is doing it somehow
